You’re welcome.

Further detail on fasting: in practice, this generally means one full meal plus two smaller meals that together don’t add up to the volume of the full meal.

In years past I have given things up, but I would rather DO something extra that I normally don’t do. I’m just not sure what to do though. My intent would be to do these things through lent, and then hopefully still do them after as well.

These were my Lent rules last year:

No sweets or candy except at my daughter’s bday party.
No beer except on St. Patrick’s Day and BD Bday.
No coffee 😦 😣 😭
No other flavored drinks unless it has nutritional value and if I’m hungry (juice and milk as a blood sugar boost and rarely. I used this maybe 3 times)
Skipping a meal on all Fridays.
Mass every Friday
Rosary every day

I will attempt to do this again, and on Fridays forego breakfast and lunch. I also want to go to confession to kick it off.

Giving up sweets (I need to do this anyway, and Lent is a good time to clean house) and striving for a plenary indulgence for a soul in purgatory each day of Lent. This one will take some sacrifice as it means daily Mass, frequent confession, and the particular activity of the day (1/2 hour Eucharistic Adoration or 1/2 hour Bible reading; easy on Lenten Fridays with Prayer Before the Crucifix). I figure it satisfies the call for more prayer and almsgiving.
Last year I gave up all TV viewing, and didn’t miss it in the least, so it was almost too easy for a penance.

I’ll probably do a paperchain for the kids again. It has a different form of prayer, fasting, or almsgiving that they can do each day of lent. This is a picture from last year. I’m hoping they forget the beans. They saw a YouTube video about kids putting beans in a jar everytime they did some sacrifice or good deed. It didn’t work well for us but they asked to do it again the next year. The huge jar of pretzels is reminding me that was my toddler version of an Ash Wednesday fast, pretzels only snack day.

I always give up hot watermelon and cold gravy. Maybe I’ll add King Cake to the list! 🤣
