the President should take charge and issue a national stay-at-home order rather than leaving this up to the states.
I disagree.

This nation is too diverse for such cookie-cutter decisions.

Have it done locally (even more local than Governor).
The Feds and States can provide recomendations.

It just doesn’t make sense in some rural areas to act like New York City.

And I suspect they would resist following a fed mandate. FL is implementing restrictions locally that will likely increase to state wide in the near future. This is also how WA handled the crisis.

Seattle implemented social distancing early but the rest of the state would not have agreed to follow the same timing.

Yeah. I can hear it now.

“Sanctuary cities” from Trump’s “occupation” or some such.

You’d be surprised. In south Georgia there is a rural area that has become one of the infection hot spots. It is believed to have spread through some funerals. And now that rural hot spot ranks as #3 as far as the count of the infections. It is currently behind Fulton and Dekalb, the two counties containing the region that most people collectively refer to as “Atlanta.”

Oh yes it does. As Gov. Cuomo pointed out, the epicenter of infection started not in Manhattan or the other boroughs of NYC but in the Westchester town of New Rochelle (where I have relatives living BTW). It only takes one person to spread the virus and overwhelm a rural community and their health care system. People do (still) travel and have traveled from one county to another and from one city and state to another. Better to lock down the whole state and the whole country to diminish the spread overall and PREVENT the spread from attacking suburban and rural communities. We must learn to think ahead and to anticipate the worst (while hoping for the best) rather than regret not having taken stricter measures. This is not an issue of, say, education, where local communities can decide things for themselves. This is a NATIONAL EMERGENCY, and it requires national leadership. The piecemeal, ad hoc approach, which we have seen plenty of, does NOT work in such a crisis. It is bad enough that we had no contingency plan for a disaster such as this; let us at least take the utmost precautions now that the crisis is upon us.

Why will the local restrictions in Florida increase to statewide, if not because the virus will spread statewide? Then why not implement restrictions statewide NOW and not wait for, even possibly prevent or minimize, the spread? What in the world, I wonder, is the Governor of Florida thinking?

It’s still going to pop up later if he shut everything down now. My understanding is they want to flatten the curve some, but not completely since it would just pop up again when restrictions were lifted, but they wouldn’t have build up any immunity for the pain incurred.

This isn’t a direct answer to your question but watch this video and the examples where they model multiple communities.

Infectious diseases and viruses do not spread by magic. With a shelter-in-place mandate from the Governor or the President, we can at least reduce the spread significantly and save human lives. Heck, we can even do that now in New York where the virus has already hit, let alone in rural communities. We need not be fatalistic about this.

Yes but still localities can make those decisions or at least have (name removed by moderator)ut on them.

This does not demand cookie-cutter responses.

Many of the counties on your own map is at zero.

Yes but so what?

Does because it began in a small area, mean that the locality is incapable of making these decisions?

Yes the state (and feds) have a role here.
(Incidentally. China had a role too and dropped the ball.)

I think the localities are capable of such decision-making, especially with appropriate (name removed by moderator)ut from the state.

Please, if ever the federal government had dominion, it is here and now. This is the supreme test of Trump’s leadership skills. Trump himself compared this crisis to a war, a war with an invisible enemy, I think he said. Who should have ultimate leadership in times of war: a local community or the federal government?

It’s not going to stay that way if people are traveling around between counties and coming in from other parts of the country.
Localities can still make such decisions.

We were told the goal here is to flatten the curve so as to not overwhelm our healthcare system while this virus spreads.

Not to introduce a police state.

How do healthy people in a community build up this immunity without infecting their old parents or their other relatives with chronic health conditions in the process? And some “healthy” people are still ending up in the hospital (and some in the ICU).

That only pushes it out. When shelter in place stops, it will pop back up again and you have to go back into shelter in place. Their goal is to ride through it without overloading their hospitals. Seattle is doing this, but NY is hit too hard.

My 2 cents?

We will have that same question six months from now too.

Sooner or later you have to get back to life.

A police state? The federal government stopping the spread of a dangerous virus and thereby saving lives is the equivalent of a police state?

Yep. That is exactly right Theo.

New York City is different than “Podunk” Oregon.

But if we have a vaccine in a year, then old people and people with health conditions will be able to protect themselves to some extent.
