Life after birth

The argument is a straw man.
It makes the assumption that pro lifers somehow don’t care about helping living human beings , which is obviously nonsensical.

I never give this vacuous argument any fuel by debating it as if it is substantive. It is vacuous.

I think you’re wise not to debate it, goout. I will mute the thread now.

This is one of those “preaching to the choir” threads anyway as I doubt there is anybody on this forum who wouldn’t in some way help a pregnant lady or mom or child in need, whether they help by donating to a charity, volunteering at the crisis center, taking in a foster kid themselves or whatever.

Sometimes the choir needs to be preached to as well! The book and movie Unplanned are excellent examples of this.

That is not up to them to be concerned about. What their error is is thinking that they created the life. They did not, God did. Forgive my blatantness but you can have sex til the cows come home and not conceive or you can do it once and conceive. It is quite simply, all in God’s hands. Once you know that (the truth). Then the rest is easier to cope with, God created that child in the womb, whether it was planned by your little shenanigans or not is quite irrelevant really (in the grand scheme of things). So God has taken responsibility for that life he created and you need to let him do that. Trust in him to provide for you and that life he has given you, even if you only have it for a little while. He will let you know how you are to live with or manage with it, if you can keep the life or pass it on to another family. You have to trust in his plan for you and that life he created. He goes before us in life and makes our way clear for the trials he gives us, removing some but not all burdens and trials. Those he leaves are for our sanctification. We must accept them and trust that he knows what is best for us and the little life he has created. Remember he has given that tiny little life an angel to care for it, so much he cares and he has known that life and planned for it, since the beginning of time. There are no mistakes for him and he will care for each of us, we just have to let him. There’s no excuse for murder. The poor are the closest to God’s heart we cant kill them just because they make us uncomfortable.

I believe that some pro-life advocates really obsess themselves with abortion to the point that they do not give much thought to the child or the mother after birth.
So, I would respectfully disagree with your post.
The whole point of my original posting here is that anything that gives aid and comfort to those who will carrying through and beyond birth is a good thing.

Oh gosh. You are so wrong I am sorry.
I have been involved with the pro life community for many years. These are the people adopting children, staffing soup kitchens, working at St V Depaul and United Fund organizations. Catholic Charities.
I have two evangelical Christian families living on either side of me. One family has a daughter from Bosnia and a son from Africa.
The other family has three open adoptions from troubled mothers around the US.
Our deacon adopted 2 children. On and on. The pro life community is on the front lines of all manner of social justice initiatives.
I mentor an at risk youth (and his mother! ).
Our scripture study has had many clothing drives and food drives.
I could go on and on. The pro life community is by nature concerned about the welfare of others.

Please consider that you are buying into political stereotypes and straw men.

Our diocese has save 3 children in the last few months on abortion clinic sidewalk.
The way this happens is by offering material support for the mother through Catholic Charities and welfare offices. Those keeping vigil are trained to offer support and resources to desperate abortion minded mothers.

Remeber: if the child is not born our social justice initiatives are meaningless .

All I am saying is that not ALL pro-life people are as you describe them.
If you believe ALL are, more power to you. I, too, like to think the best of my brothers and sisters in this world.
But I have seen some people who seem to lose interest after a child in born. Kind of like they accomplished their mission to get the child to birth.
This all I am saying.
If I offended you in some way, that was not my purpose.
I just want to see kids from birth to school and beyond have the best life they can. And to receive support from everyone who can support them.

I think we hear this argument so often because abortion supporters are trying to somehow justify what they know is really an unteneble moral position.

I am not making a statement of absolutes, I am witnessing to you the real character of the pro life community.

You cannot offend me in this area believe me. Your assumptions simply are not the way it is, they are political caricatures. And the work will go on whether affirmed or scorned.

I think one of the things is that a lot of other legal and social rights kick in after birth, so there are multiple safety nets to look after people’s well-being after a certain point in time.

Which is why pro-life advocates focus on the time period when children are vulnerable from harm from the people with the most responsibility to protect them.

It’s disingenuous to say, “Those people don’t care about moms and kids after they’re born.” Because then you fall into the category of people who sneer about the “forced birthers”, and that’s not exactly the kind of company you’d want to be lumped in with, right? 😉

People care about all sorts of people— the homeless, the unemployed, the addicts, the gang members, the orphans, the widows, the senior citizens, the lonely, the depressed, the mentally ill. But just because they don’t give equal attention or support to addicts AND the unemployed AND the homeless AND the senior citizens AND the mentally ill doesn’t mean that they don’t care about them, period. It just means people have finite resources-- physical, mental, financial, spiritual, whatever-- and they use them according to their priorities. So if I see there are ten soup kitchens for the homeless in my area, and five places for the unemployed to cultivate job skills and get day labor, and three organizations that make sure the elderly get fed— then that frees me up to focus on the unborn, or on the mentally ill, or the gang members, or whoever I want to reach out to.

By that logic we should have the right and duty to eliminate anyone whose life we judge to be of poor quality. Life is life; human life is either valuable- or it’s not

Yes. all the time
Non of them fit into the highly-politicized, anti-government, anti-social programs general category?
Sure. What do you want? People? Or neat little political stereotypes?
You can use the extremes to paint stereotypes in any area you want across any political boundary.
What’s the point? The point is that it confirms your desire for a neat stereotype.

Generally speaking, evangelicals (and Catholics) that I work with are compassionate people who do the bulk of the social justice work.

No, I’d rather that they don’t, but unfortunately many people surrender to groupthink. My hope would be to drive a wedge in the divide so conversation can happen. Unfortunately the 2 extreme sides make that difficult. From my experience the extreme views are many times the most distanced from it.

It is more difficult to hate from up close.

And preoccupation with that drama is counterproductive.
Some are preoccupied with drama, some are helping people despite all the insane noise.
