List 30 movies you love that are probably on no one's all-time best list

Breaker Morant–Australian-Boer war
Brilliant movie.

We’ve been on a bad-movie kick recently, possibly inspired by this thread (and moving from the ridiculous to the sublime, mixing it up with stuff like Becket and A Man For All Seasons).

Dark Star - John Carpenter’s first ‘major’ (snicker) film. In space, nobody can hear you debate phenomenology with a self-aware planet-destroying bomb.
Conan the Barbarian - uh, yeah… hohe kultur, folks. Contemplate this on the Tree of Woe.
The Buddhist Fist - amazing kung-fu ‘classic’. If it weren’t for the horrible dub (seriously, Cockney accents?!) it’d stand up there with Enter The Dragon. The fight choreography is some of the best I’ve ever seen. If you like it flashy but more grounded than the usual wire-fu, watch this. If you don’t, watch it anyway, if only for the chess battle.
Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter - the movie that has it all! Vampires, lesbians, luchadores, crazy preachers in hedges, musical numbers (including a Star Wars-themed scat), and of course Jesus. It actually does have a very deeply Christian message, believe it or don’t :o

BadMovies.org has lots of reviews for further additions to people’s lists 🙂

That’s great! It does make me want to clarify my intentions with this thread, though, in an effort to keep it from becoming a “bad movie” thread. I’m looking for movies people love that may have been less than all-time classics. When they come on TV you’ve got to watch it. Again!!
If some of those are schlock, so be it, but I’m hoping to hear about overlooked or under-appreciated gems. 🙂

And congratulations to everyone for getting this thread linked in the CAF Hot Topics email. Woo-hoo! 👍

richardsgirl- I see your location and I’m curious: are you American or English? It looks like only three UK-made films (counting The Snowman, which I took to be referring to the animated short) on your list. Also, is it true that The Notebook is the ultimate “chick flick”? 🙂 I haven’t seen it.

Not really – it’s definitely in that category, but it’s not your usual sappy romance. It’s just as much a coming-of-age story, at least through the first two thirds, and has an extremely bittersweet ending.

We LOVE The Snowman! Our lads ask for it again and again…it is just gorgeous…the music, the animation…love it! 🙂

Ok dont think I have 30 but I’ll put down what I got 🙂

Breaker Morant–Australian-Boer war
Gallipolli–again Australian–WWI
Big Red One–WWII
Return to Me–Bonnie Hunt–cracks me up
Roman Holiday
The Outsiders
The Aristocats—blame the kids for that one
1941
Jurrassic Park–slightly embarrassed to admit that one :o
Abbot and Costello
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Homeward Bound–again, blame the kids for this one too.

Well, I just about made it half way there…

Many people have had trouble coming up with 30 movies they like that are not classics. I want to encourage anyone who wants to post to do so, even if you can’t come close to that number. Or post again as you think of more titles, as some others have done. With that in mind, here are some more of mine that come to mind:

Dirty Pretty Things (I think Chjwetel Ejiofor is one of the best actors out there)
Dogma
Lady In The Water (Love M. Night Shyamalan)
Minority Report
Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Brangelina show real-life chemistry)
Poltergeist
The Sweetest Thing (A rare female “buddy movie.” Cameron Diaz & Christina Applegate are raunchy but funny.)

Cranch have you seen EVERY movie in this thread?! 🙂
😃 NO! I counted about 36 I haven’t seen on just the first two pages of the thread. And I haven’t seen 9 from your list (although 7 Up isn’t really a movie, is it?). By the way, a couple of those look really good; so thank you, I’ll check them out. 👍

blush ok “7 Up” is a documentary but it was too good to leave out!

I tried to put in lots of great Aussie movies that those on the other side of the globe may not have seen. Enjoy! 🙂

That’s 8 more I haven’t seen (counting Wolf Creek). 😃 And assuming Running On Empty is the Australian car movie (which until now I didn’t know about). River Phoenix starred in a very different movie with the same name. For what it’s worth, I think The Mosquito Coast is maybe the best thing Harrison Ford has done!

Speaking of Down Under, do you like Judy Davis? I think she’s terrific. I especially like High Tide. I saw it quite a few years ago, but it has stayed with me. Thinking about all these Australian films reminds me that one of the first movies I saw on cable TV when I got it around 1983 was Don’s Party. “Wow! So this is cable!” 😃

Do I win a prize for providing you with the most new viewing material? 😃 But it’s only 7 this time round 'cause I meant the River Phoenix “Running on Empty”, may he Rest In Peace. Such a waste of life and talent. I love the story of how Harrison Ford got his first break…working as a carpenter on the set of Star Wars.

Judy Davis is an amazing actress…though I haven’t seen High Tide. You may also like “My Brilliant Career”. (There now - is it back up to 8? 🙂 ) Did you see her as Judy Garland? I think that one was actually ‘made for TV’.
