The Gospel is simply stated as “Forgiveness for the repentance of sins”. How can you repent of sins if you do not know them. Lists simply help. You tell me a better way for the masses (1.2 Billion) to prepare for confession and know when to go. Certainly, a few very WELL READ Catholics do not need this simplicity, but alas they are very very very thin on the ground.

Apostacy from not studying the faith enough? Just like Origen or Tertullian? How about Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Henri de Lubac, Jacques Maritian? Apostacy comes from studying the faith too much and realizing some of the many internal contradictions.

Or wasting time…do these message boards count?

Hell sure must be full if these are mortal sins (or at least constitute grave nature).

But even better:

I am sitting in my apartement in Taiwan right now in shorts (above the knees) which I wore to work today. I guess I had better go confess.

Who compiled this list? This is rediculously puritan. I am starting to wonder if anyone on this forum is even Catholic.

I refuse to worship any God who would condemn someone to hell for agnosticism when faith itself is supposedly a free gift from him. That is Calvinist double-predestination.

The spiritual life is a journey. The closer we come to God the more aware we become of our sinfulness. At first we may be unaware that certain things in our life offend God; but as we grow in our love of God we become more aware of those things that offend Him. Conversely, the farther we stray from God through both moral perversion, and apostacy, the more blind we become to sin. Eventually we “laugh out loud” at the mere mention of “sin”. “Are these people crazy: these things are not sinful”, the blind one thinks to himself. Eventually such a blind person cannot see sin anywhere. The only “sin” to such a person will be “political incorrectness” - that is, things that are contrary to the spirit of the world, rather than the spirit of God. All that the Church has taught will seem like utter foolishness to this blind one. In his apostacy he will have drawn so far away from God that his conversion is virtually impossible (Heb 6:4).

That is why we should listen to the saints who drew close to God by a holy life, and turn a deaf ear to the immoral apostates who we are surrounded by today.

Point well put. Bravo Bravo. Inspired words, that sadly fall on many deaf ears, hence opposition to lists etc. We all hate being told of our weakness and sinfulness. Sadly, it is the human condition resulting from the great fall, many have darkened undertstanding. Its this thing of complete OBEDIENCE to God that appears to be a hang up for many.
 
A helpful verse for me was “If you love Me, you will keep My word.” (paraphrase) It hit me that I didn’t love Jesus

, because I rejected to obey / keep His word. I rejected the teaching He safeguarded through His Church. My actions called Jesus a liar by acting like the “gates of hell” has taken over His authoritive Church. That’s why this list would have made me very upset, because I would had to admit that I didn’t love Jesus, His word, commandments or Church. Wow, true repentents is very hard.

I don’t feel like I love God, either. This is what consoles me: if I keep trying, someday I will love Him tremendously forever and ever, even if not in this life. God will accomplish it in me. His goodness is stronger than my weakness. I have to fight the temptation not to give God credit for all the ways that I obey Him. I’m afraid to give God credit because then I have to fight the temptation to give that credit to myself.
Reading*** from the Diary of St. Faustina helps me to trust Jesus more. Here are some quotes I found at www.catholic-forum.com/churches/cathteach/divinemercy1.htm***:
When boredom and discouragement beat against your heart, run away from yourself and hide in My heart. DO not fear struggle; courage itself often intimidates temptations, and they dare not attack us. Always fight with the deep conviction that I am with you. Nightly examinations of conscience with a list of some sort (one can use portions of the list each night, or read through to find those sins we tend to fall into, use them until we find ourselves with the help of sacramental grace able to avoid the near occasions of those sins, and then move on to a new section) is a good way to reanimate our consciences according to the teachings of the Church.

Will trying to observe a hard and fast set of laws that may be too heavy a load to fulfill and tempt me to despair or lead to scrupulosity be a better path to sainthood than trying to do my best?

To Love God and love neighbor and examine my conscience as best as I understand our faith with the aid of the Holy Spirit is a better path than a list, I think.

I ask this same question. I suffer with scrupulosity and have for years just recently put a name to it though. I already think everything I do is a sin. Reading this list just makes me feel like I need to confess even more “sins”. Before I found out what my problem was I looked for a “List of Mortal Sins” to prove to myself that I was a horrible person who needed to go to Confession everyday. I am now trying to depend on the Holy Spirit to help me know what to confess not some cold hard list.:yup:

Since you suffer from scruples, you ought to meditate often on the mercy of God. I used to have scruples also from time to time, so I know what you have to deal with.

Begin to pray for a greater love of God. Scruples are produced by fear - which is “the beginning of wisdom”. Eventually fear is overcome by love, as the Bible says - “perfect love casteth out all fear”. Therefore, the more you begin to love God the more your fear (and scruples) should diminish.

Also, as a bit of encouragement, scruples are not a bad thing in the beginning of a conversion. It is often a sign of a delicate conscience, which is what we want. Both St. Augustine and St. Francis De Sales taught that scruples can be signs of future holiness. But we have to be sure we do not allow them to become to severe or they can do damage.

Meditate on the mercy of God and pray for God to help you love Him more.

Apostasy. It stems from 3 sources: Failure to study the faith, Failure to pursue the knowledge, love and service of God, Failure to seek the True Faith If one suspects that the Catholic Faith is a true faith and fails to do so, it is a mortal sin.

That all sounds like one source to me. What happens if you consider it might be true, investigate it thoroughly, and then decide it’s not true? Spend 50 years until you do?

I believe that if you are sincere and follow your conscience, then you would not be in Mortal sin.

From my own experience, having quietly read my way back into the faith (Thanks to the Internet, Catholic Answers and others), I firmly believe that anyone who thoroughly objectively studies the Catholic faith cannot but find it is not true objectively.

However, very few will come to the true Church in an objective frame of mind. So, subjectively there are loads of reasons for rejecting it depending on the time and place of your situation such as culture (Islam, Hindu, Judaism), history (Protestantism, Bad Catholics) sin ( Catholicism is Dogmatic, no other religion is so tightly or hierarchly structured), education, poor catechesis, brainwashing by secular society etc etc. It is complex, but the Holy Spirit appears to win converts from all walks and all backgrounds.

The description at the top of the list seems to expressly deny that the sins below can ever be objectively less than mortal. But that is not so for some of the ones listed, so far as I know.

Failure to pray could mean you skipped the morning offering one day, but got in all the other prayers. Wasting time could mean you lingered 5 minutes in bed. Selfishness can be in a large matter or a small matter. If you take the better slice of pizza for yourself, the matter is small, not grave. The list does make a distinction on theft that it can be less than grave in a round about way, by only describing a large theft.

I do understand the list says that subjectively they can be brought down from mortal to venial, but it would be incorrect to expressly deny that they can objectively be less than grave.

I would not recommend this list.

To encourage one to not sin, it would be wiser to encourage the avoidance of all sins, no matter how small. This would be something you would do on the way to trying to love God. I think it is a bad idea to go around thinking stuff is grave when it isn’t.

Normally for people as adamant as yourself, from my experience, this is because there is some sin in ones life one wants to hide from. Being a proper Catholic does not allow this as weekly we face the Eucharist with an examination of conscience.

I left a note on your thread to help you overcome your subjective analysis. Disprove Fatima and its miracles!!! If you are right you should be able to beyond all resoanable doubt.

For what it is worth, on my way back to truth , I was a bit of a know all, I tried and failed on the Fatima test when I looked objectively at ALL the evidence, hence I humbly am back in the fold of the one flock under the one shepherd, worshipping the one True God, who became man in the form of our Lord and Saviour - Jesus Christ - who established ONE Church under the office of Peter (Kepha- Rock) and told us that the Gates of Hell would not prevail against this Rock and from detailed analysis this has been true for 2,000 years. God does not make promises he does not keep.

God loves you, go with your objective conscience.

I have read your stuff on Fatima, you are clutching at straws. 70,000 witnesses saw the miracle over 600 square miles. Thuis is not mass hysteria. I met a witness who saw the miracle in a village 20 miles North of Fatima, her husband (deceased) saw it some 30 miles South. This lady was a very holy and pious woman with no hidden agenda and no sins to hide. She told me as a matter of fact and could not believe that people could deny this HAPPENED.

You cannot disprove Fatima. Using spin and playing with words we all can do. It is obvious to me, you cannot bear that the Catholic Church is the true church, probably in my humblest opinion because you cannot live up to its holy demands.

Anyways, time will tell, your arguments are old, we agree to disagree, truth will never change regardless. You will still meet the King of Kings at the end of your life as I will. Please God we will both meet him in a state of Grace. Check out the list of mortal sins to see what that means.

When are you going to disprove all of the miracles of other religions? When are you going to refute the part of my essays that says miracles are no measure of truth?
