Did/Has anybody watched any of this? I am a big fan of U2 & Bon Jovi (at the Philly concert) so, I’ve been catching bits & pieces. That’s pretty much the only reason I watched SOME of it. That & to see how stupid the celebs & people attending are. I understand that Africa has a level of poverty I cannot even comprehend, I do, I understand that, BUT, I feel it is a slap in the face, when Bono has stated, “I don’t want your money, I want your voice” to tell the people of the countries of the G8 summit that they want their leaders to help Africa. This means, either taxes will be raised, or funds will be diverted, IF a country goes through with this. I further feel that this is complete ballocks because the US HAS given billions if not trillions of dollars to Africa…where is it going? It’s not getting to the people. We’ve given more than any other country & are told it is not good ENOUGH!!! It is a charity event, yet, the performers are receiving gift bags worth $12,000. BUT, most of all, I am upset because, and perhaps this has already been stated in the Pro-Life folder, the abortion statistics of the United States makes the AIDS & poverty (combined) in Africa look like smallpox in the US. I am not liking how these celebs are saying, “Go to the website & read & learn about it & show your support,” and, “It’s a shame that where your born determines if you live or not. It shouldn’t be like that. It really shouldn’t”. INDEED!!! That’s why IF I had any spare money (I should be declared a charity at this point, that’s how much money I don’t have), it would go to preventing abortions & euthanasia. Charitiy begins at home!!! How DARE these retards (at some point, I acknowledge, I lost objectivity in this news folder thread) say that our government should help the people in Africa (which we’ve been doing, but, not helping because of corrupt governments over there making sure that our help never GETS to the people), when, not only HAVE we been, but, there is a MUCH worse crisis out in our back yards!!! AND speaking of helping Africa, has (maybe I read about it here) anybody seen Uganda’s AIDS stats? It has significantly, SIGNIFICANTLY gone down!!! Why? The “ABC” method. – Abstinence, Be Faithful, Condoms (last resort). They have promoted abstinence & monagamy over “birth control”, instead of handing the condoms or IUDs out freely. It upsets me that this is not mentioned. Switching back, it upset me ***GREATLY ***that Green Day (a Canadian Band) sung their song, “Don’t Want To Be An American Idiot” … Granted, free speech & all (and, for all I know, they could have most likely been at the Toronto concert), but, wow, drumming up support against the United States when we have done the most to help out ALL other countries AND, in such a short time of our existance. THIS REALLY upset me.

So, to recap: LIVE 8 – WHAT IS IT DOING, REALLY!!!

Thank you for letting me vent. 🙂

OK, you obviously feel strongly about this, but something does need to be done! People die every three seconds, and we could help them. We HAVE to help these people. We HAVE to MAKE POVERTY HISTORY. We can do it. We have to do it.

Michael :yup:

Two things to say:
  1. My thread is not a dupe because this one merely attacks it, mine asks simply for opinions and feelings on it.
  2. Comparing the USA’s abortion rates to Africa’s poverty is disgusting, quite frankly. American who had abortions have chosen to have them. Not one of those people in Africa have chosen EXTREME poverty.
Michael

I apologise for not seeing the first thread.

YES, I AGREE!!! SOMETHING ~DOES~ NEED TO BE DONE!!! We need to take out the governments IN Africa who are opressing these people!!! DOUBLING THE AID TO AFRICA WILL NOT DO ANYTHING BUT THROW OUR MONEY AWAY IF IT DOESN’T EVEN GET TO THE PEOPLE!!!

No, but, the point is, if they are trying to drum up support by playing the numbers game, the abortion stats in America easily outnumbers the impoverished dying over there. Why are we so concerned about people not living over there when we have a better chance here to help people? Like I said, those people cannot be helped if their government doesn’t LET them be helped. …Same over here.

Well don’t be mad — 🙂

I posted dup thread only to indicate to readers of this one that another thread was ongoing about the same subject. 😉

That doesn’t alter the fact that people DO NOT CHOOSE to be impoverished!

People CHOOSE to have abortions! I know its terrible, but really, its not the same!

Alright, BUT, people would not choose this if they knew more, if more education was out about it and/or if it was not legal. (It’s worse here in the US than in the UK because it’s hardly moderated).

No, I agree, they do not choose to live in extreme poverty, BUT, sending money over there WILL NOT HELP THEM!! Do you understand that?

AND…I looked to check WHY I didn’t see the first thread & noted the times…It was probably posted just as I was starting this one. No biggie.

I know, and better education would help of course, but taking it out on people who cant help themselves…

It depends how the money is used - of course money can help. It can build SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS, WELLS. Children can drink clean water and go to school, so they can get jobs and feed their families. etc.

:hmmm: :ehh:

So you are saying the victims of the abortion chooses to be murdered by having their bodies ripped apart, brains sucked out, etc?

Dictators choose to keep the money for themselves, the country in corruption, and the people starving… they don’t care about the poor. Are we to invade some African countries and fight wars against the dictators?

That is completely WRONG!!! I never said abortion was right! I am one of the most ANTI-ABORTION person you could meet. But the mother who has that abortion DECIDES to have that abortion. Making a parallel between that decision (which is WRONG!!!) and the helpless, unchosen situation of millions is completely out of order.

Yes, they do choose to be impoverished.

Now they don’t do it by muttering, “Rich or poor? Rich or poor? Which do I want to be?”

They make their choices by the sum of what they do and fail to do – in the US, people choose poverty by failing to take advantage of education, dropping out of school, taking drugs and committing crimes.

In other nations, they often choose poverty as an alternative to throwing out the corrupt governments that oppress and impoverish them.

And giving aid to those governments (as opposed to giving it directly to the people) merely makes the ruling classes richer and more able to oppress the rest of the people.

It is completely in order and abortion is worse because they have no way of defending themselves. They are the “helpless, unchosen situation of millions” far more than the millions of Africans in poverty. You can at a certain age take up arms, protest, revolt, etc. Completely defenseless children cannot. If you are a child and cannot fight… your parents/relatives can do it for you. A baby whose mother wants her dead (and has the legal protection to have a “doctor” kill her) has no protection whatsoever.

The person who commites murder or rape also DECIDES to do it. Saying “It’s a choice” doesn’t make it moral. You can’t somehow make the killing of over 40 million living human beings (so far) anything less than what it is – a crime that dwarfs the holocaust.

Now, if we are to truly help the people in Africa and some other areas, we can only do it if they have honest, democratic governments committed to improving the lot of the people.

And the people themselves must play the major role in making that happen.

THANK YOU!!! I thought that I was the only one who felt this way on this forum.

Like I posted in the original L8 thread, music.aol.com/live_8_concert/live_now if one wants to watch it live. I like a lot of the musical acts they have (London, Toronto, & Philly…occasionally Berlin), but, I’m just not happy with the message and the diverting attention & the GALL to have people come to the concerts for free and have THOSE people tell the government to spend money to help…WHEN THEY DIDN’T!!! (necesarilly…I mean, they MAY have as, no doubt, there ARE booths asking for donations.) Maybe the stars themselves don’t know the real situation…:banghead:

A Townhall column this morning

townhall.com/columnists/GuestColumns/London20050702.shtml

made some very good points. What happened to the money raised by the LAST such concert? Are people aware that Africa’s productivity has DROPPED in recent years despite this and other aid programs? The problem with all of these well intentioned efforts is that there is so much corruption in the governments that the funds don’t get to the needy people, nor do they go to create infrastructure to help the people help themselves. The columnist summed it up as poor people from rich countries giving to rich people in poor countries.

I think this effort is certainly going to help and certainly the focus should be on Africa. But we have to attack the problem first and the problem is the “leadership” in many African countries. Obviously no defender of Apartheid but frankly the black leaders put in charge have made things much worse.
