Fathers of Mercy
Society of St. John Cantius
Friars of the Renewal
Franciscan Friars of the Primative Observance
Dominicans (Eastern Province)

I also hear that there is a really good Benedictine Monestary in Oklahoma.

If you are in Kentucky, please consider the Diocese of Covington. We have a very good bishop, Roger Foys.
But then, they change the bishop! (or you end up under a ???pastor)
I think religious orders are probably the best way to go these days.

I’m sure there are a few good ones left but…

Fathers of Mercy , Fr. Bill Casey KY

FABULOUS!
God bless,

But if all the faithful men enter the orders, what will the dioceses be left with:O

You need to look here:

Institute on Religious Life

see specifically, Vocation Search
(click on the men’s links at the top of the page)

The IRL is dedicated to promoting religious life as lived in communities with authentic commitment to their proper charisms and to orthodoxy in preaching, teaching, worshipping, etc.

One great orthodox men’s community not listed (yet) on that site is the Missionaries of the Poor (MOP). I am hoping to enter formation with them later this year; last year I spent three months living, working and praying with them in Jamaica.

I’ll be praying for you. 🙂

In Christ.

Institute of Christ the King. Uncompromising orthodoxy in every fashion, from church architecture, to chant, to the homilies and conferences.

Without intending to criticize ICK (wonderful acronym, insn’t it?), I believe you are confusing orthodoxy with tradionalism. Current orthodoxy is a modern design for a modern church. There is a certain latitude given, I believe, but it rarely now includes a church with traditional architectural elements in recognizable form. Even new parish churches built in Rome do not look like Santa Maria in Trastevere, yet they are fully under the approval of the Vatican.

Andreas Hofer:
If looking to combine monasticism with traditionalism, check out the Benedictines at Our Lady of the Annunciation.

I visited that monastery, and lived, ate, prayed, and worked with the monks (especially helping to fix their computers 🙂 ) for about two weeks, beginning on the Monday prior to Ash Wednesday in 2004.

It is a wonderful community, and I can recommend it for the same reasons you suggested.

Diocesan parishes staffed by priests of religious orders, of course.
It exists now in most diocese around the world.

We (in So Cal) have (just the few I am personally aware of) one staffed completely by the Norbertines, one completely by Franciscans (what a CONTRAST THAT IS!) One completely by Oblates of the Virgin Mary - (FABULOUS!) -and I’m SURE there are others. Call your chancery office and ask. It happens all the time.

Blessings,
Angel

I second the FSSP, ICTKSP, and Clear Creek. I would like to add The Society of Saint John Cantius (www.societycantius.org) and check out carmelitemonks.org – it says that they are established with permission of the Bishop: but I don’t know anything about them. I intend to contact them with an eye toward visiting them eventually.

There are, of course, many many others. Perhaps I’ll give more later. Got to get to bed to wake up for mass. 🙂

I think you can try the order who celebrate TLM but with obedience to the Pope. I think they are the priestly fraternity of St. Peter.

You can try the Order of St. Benedict. They are monks. Or the franciscans

The criteria I used varied on the selections below varied but considered fidelity on each. I have had some contact with priests from each of these orders.
  1. Fathers of Mercy
  2. Community of St. John
  3. SOLT
  4. FSSP
  5. Franciscan Friars of the Renewal

And the reason for this post is?

Having said that I have a couple to add. The Carmelites of the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary.

There are also some very good monasteries of Trappists out there.

This is a very subjective thing as not everyone is called to the same orders or to the diocease.

I have run into this with some people who seem to get upset with me becuase I have chosen to enter a religious order instead of a diocease. They keep telling me, “we need dioceasen priests”. They cannot seem to understand the call to community that I feel.

I was trying to creating an interesting thread. I like getting feedback from others regarding positive religious orders.

I agree that this is subjective. I have seen many threads that are subjective.

Thank you for following your vocation into the religious order.

Sincerely,

Larry B.

My pleasure.

I visited with the Fathers of Mercy. They were on my short list.

They are a great group, just weren’t for me.

Their focus is on the parish mission. During an interview with them at one of their “Come and See” weekends they made the comment that they focus on the mission and not the Liturgy.

This is where I have a difference as for me the mission starts with the Liturgy.

Having said that, they are great at the missions.

Their “Come and See” weekend was great to as it wasn’t so much as a “come join us” pitch as it was a general vocations retreat.

The largest single society is the Society of Jesus (Jesuits.)

The largest single order is the Order of Friars Minor (one order of the Franciscans.)

One of the up-and-coming newer men’s communities that I think deserves mention is:

The Missionaries of the Poor
founded by Fr. Richard Ho Lung (former Jesuit) in the early 1980’s

I spent nearly three months living, working and praying with them in Jamaica last year, as a means of discernment. When I came home in June, I hesitated and then pushed the Lord’s call to the MOP out to the peripherary of my spiritual discernment. But after the New Year, I decided to trust Him more and “go for it.” Presently, I’m taking care of some personal matters that prevent me from beginning aspirancy with the MOP, but later this year I hope to begin formation either in Haiti or Jamaica.

All you young men, listen! The LORD may be calling you — pray, pray, pray, especially before the Blessed Sacrament! And don’t be afraid to visit a community to get a hands-on feeling for their apostolate, spirituality and community life. Come and visit the MOP in Jamaica anytime! You just never know until you try …

No offense, Byz, but I would be more than cautious of a province that lets its pre-novices out on the computer and internet so frequently…
