What was it Bishop Fulton Sheen said? Not one person hates the Catholic Church, they hate what they think is the Catholic Church…Something like that. kungfubob certainly made me feel sad with his original post, because he hadn’t looked at the wonderful gift he had been given and instead of finding out, has chosen a backward step away from the real presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I think there is some cause for hope also, because he has found a relationship with Jesus, and I hope and pray that this heals him and grows inside him. Maybe some day he will come home to Rome?

What is important for you are traditional values: wearing a veil to church, kneeling before reception of the Eucharist, and Communion on the tongue. Obviously, hearing Mass in a unintelligible language is another.

Hearing Mass in the language of the Church, not an ünitnelligable language." In this country, reading is practically a legal *requirement; * therefore nobody can whine about the Mass being in Latin as the missals have translations.

Why would I be disgusted? The Holy Spirit leads us where He will. There is no realistic alternative to union with our Christian brothers. We look for the unity that is a gift of God’s Spirit. We pray with Jesus that all may be one.

Are you saying that the only way of uniting the Christians is by getting rid of Latin? How many converts do you know who converted *as a result *of tossing out the language of the Church? Pope Benedict has encouraged Catholics to start learning basic prayers in Latin. I don’t see the problem.

Do you think that I prefer the Latin Mass because of the language? The Mass and other religious ceremonies being in Latin, for me, is so far down on the list that I myself rarely bring it up. Still, why not keep it? People make time and pay money to learn Spanish, Japanese, French, Russian, …the list goes on, but why is it that when it comes to Latin there’s this big (and I’m not fingering this at you, just people in general).

There is unity in language. There are 300 million Americans who speak English, and I am not aware of any who speak Latin. Who is the latin for? It is for ‘God and the Angels’, but they understand English too.

Language, and communion on the tongue, and receiption under one species, and hanky hats, and rosaries knocking off the back of pews while we pray at the Divine Sacrifice, kneeling for Communion, and reception on the tongue - these are all Shiboleths for traditionalists, including hatred for Vatican 2, and all it stands for.

I love Latin. I just don’t think it is the language of the people when all the people speak a vernacular.

I have read the Bible, Bob. I am a calligrapher/illuminator who attemps to aspire to that which our Irish ancestors did. You on the other hand have not responded to the greatest gift Our Lord gave us - body, blood, soul and divinity. I accept that gift as did St. Patrick, St. Kieran, St. Columba. Body, blood, soul and diviinty - not some Sassenach belief in sola scriptura. Body, blood, soul and divinity. Is this not good enough for you? The Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us. Is this not good enough for you?

Hatred for Vatican II, huh? Name ***one ***document from that Council that condemns one thing you mentioned.

The recommended changes in the liturgy put forward by Vatican 2 - vernacular, participated Mass, communion under both species, altar facing the people, restrict or remove prayers that are not part of the Sacrifice, as the prayers at the end of the Mass, the requirement for preaching a sermon at every Mass, expansion of readings from Sacred Scripture, removal or leseening of genuflections and crosses, which added a superstitutious element to the Mass.

Is that enough for you? I dont have to quote chapter and verse on these things, since most have been implemented, which drives the Tradtionalists over the edge, calling them ‘protestant’ changes, lessening of devotion, and such.

Thank God they are holier than us, and holier than the Pope.

I know exactly where you came from and you’re not the only one who felt this way.

Many who are brought up in a Catholic household are very ignorant of the faith. The fault can the parents or the clergy of the Church.

Fact is, most Catholics don’t read Bible because they got their teachings from the Church or the liturgy at mass. Protestants, on the other hand, ONLY got the Bible. Therefore, they would know Bible verses more than an ordinary Catholic.

So when an ordinary or ignorant Catholic meets a Protestant, a Catholic would be so overwhelmed by all the Bible verses thrown at him that he’d think he is *enlightened *by a Protestant, when in fact is…what does he know !
He’d think that all his entire life, he’d been lied to by the Church. That the Church kept him from knowing God or Jesus or the Bible !

And the next thing you know, this ordinary Catholic becomes a passionate Protestant going about slamming the Catholics and the Church. Going by the Bible only doctrine !

Kungfubob, can’t say I blame you. But I hope that you continue to have this zeal for Jesus and begin to dig deeper into the faith.

There are much, much, much to learn about Catholicism where you’re coming from. Just have an open mind and heart and eventually, all your misconceptions about the Church will be corrected.

How many times have we heard this?
It is obvious that you have a very poor understanding of Catholicism dispite your username.

If you only have the Bible, you are using only 1 of the 3 pieces that the Bible is a part of. First came Jesus who taught orally 12 speacial people and charged to them the care of a church. For the next 300 years these people and their successors also taught orally, or with letters. Also some of them set down some of Jesus Teaching. In addition they established a heirarchy among the various churches they established to ensure that the faith was taught properly and consistantly. Lastly the leaders of the Church gathered together and determined which books should be considered as inspired and without error to be included with the OT into a canon we call the Holy Bible.

The Church was established by Jesus, on Sacred Oral Tradition, preached and protected by the Magesterial office of the apostolic Church, then LASTLY the bible was codified and ratified.

The Bible Alone simply doesn’t work.

I was Baptised in a Chapel in County Derry,N.Ireland and have attented Mass regulary and recieved Holy Comunion for near 30 years. I am not a Protestant and i never will be as they have just as much to answer for as the Catholic Church does. The Religions of this Earth are man-made and there-fore suit their own political agenda.Pleasing Governments all along the way.
