It’s Carlton Cuse. He wasn’t one of the creators, but has been on board as the co-showrunner since partway through the first season. Some accounts simply say that he was “raised a Roman Catholic” (which could mean anything). But this great article says he is a “practicing Catholic” and goes on with some actual quotes about how important his faith is to him.
Sweet read. Thanks for the link!

LOST will probably run forever, … because it is the largest employer in the State of Hawaii.

Somebody showed me a photo of some ribbon cutting or something. More than 10,000 people showed up.

I mean, I expect, like, if you go there you can get the back stage studio tour.

Tonight was a good episode. They really muddied the water as to the Man in Black. If he was telling the truth to Sawyer, and he very well could be, than he could end up being the good guy with Jacob as the villain.

I thought it was interesting how the white and black rocks balanced on the scale. Perhaps light (Jacob) and dark (smoke monster) are meant to be in balance. Those rocks are also very similar to the rocks that the skeletons of Adam and Eve had in the caves back during Season 1.

Whether Jacob is good or not is a bit ambiguous. The Others purport to be followers of Jacob and constantly claim to be the “good guys”, but their actions say otherwise. Still, it may be that the Others are following a force they do not understand and their actions may not be condoned by Jacob.

Overall, this was a slow episode - a bit of a surprise for a Locke-centric. But we may have finally got an answer as to why they are on the island - Jacob is searching for candidates to perform his job of protecting the island. Of course that brings up many questions:
Why protect the island?
Why is the island special?
Who or what should it be protected from?
How do the Others fit in with Jacob’s plan?
Does Ben and Widmore’s conflict have significance in the struggle between Jacob and the smoke monster?
Why does Jacob need a replacement? Did he know he would die?
How did Jacob and the smoke monster come to the island and why do they have the powers they seem to have?
Why are Jacob and the smoke monster in conflict?
Why does the smoke monster want to go home? Where is home?
Is the smoke monster lying to Sawyer?

ta dah!

Very good call! All the people whom Jacob visited off island had a number except for Kate. I wonder why that is…

I’m still maintaining that MIB is definitely the bad guy. At the end when he asked Sawyer if he wanted to leave the island and Sawyer responded “Hell yes,” I thought “Hell yes indeed!” Sawyer is embarking down a dangerous path.

I had to laugh when MIB/Locke took the light-colored rock from the scale and threw it out into the ocean. Then when Sawyer asked what that was about, he replied “Inside joke”. 😛

It is interesting that Jacob could come and go from the island but MIB cannot. He needs Sawyer to help him leave. The mysterious little boy had to remind him of the “rules” He struggled to find a “loophole” to be able to kill Jacob. His power is definitely limited. Of course, on the “scale” of good and evil, it is never evenly weighted. Evil is never unbridled, but God’s goodness knows no end. 🙂

My favorite line was at the burial for Locke. After Ben gives an awkward eulogy in which he confesses to murdering Locke (while a fake Locke is on the loose), Frank mumbles “weirdest damn funeral I’ve ever been to” 😃

That was my wife’s favorite, too. 🙂

Not to mention MIB said to the younger Jacob (I’m assuming that that is who the boy in the jungle was) when told he can’t kill him, “YOu can’t tell me what to do”. Does that sound like a fallen angel we’ve heard of?

I’m starting to think “Adam & Eve” are really Jacob & Esau.

I agree - MIB is the bad guy which is why he chucked the white rock and not the black rock.

Liked the episode although it was slow. Liked finding the names w/ numbers. Hilarious when Ben says at Locke’s funeral he’s sorry for killing him and the rests’ reaction. Interesting that the one woman said that Esau can’t change out of Locke’s body anymore. Loved Sawyer being drunk off his hinder {great acting!} and telling MIB that he wasn’t Locke.

I wonder who the little kid was. My wife suggested Aaron. I thought it might be a young Jacob. I have a feeling that if the actor who played Walt didn’t grow 10 feet in a year’s time, it would’ve been Walt.

Right on! 👍

It is an interesting line. It is the same line that Locke (the real Locke) has said several times over the course of the show. When Locke said it, it was an indication of his perseverance and faith that he could overcome his obstacles. When MIB says it, it means almost the opposite. It is a cry of desparation and pride.

Juxtaposed with this shift, the “flash-sideways” Locke has given up on trying to overcome his disability and is instead opting for acceptance (effectively saying that people can tell him what he can’t do).

I’m not sure what it all means in terms of the endgame, but it’s fun to draw the connections. 🙂

The only problem with this theory though, is that Jack identifies the skeletons as belonging to a man and a woman in Season 1 and said that they had been there for 40 years. I have no idea who it could be. It could be Rose and Bernard (stuck in Dharma times for some reason), but i kinda doubt it.

Yeah, it was very sad to see Locke crushed and humiliated throughout the flash-sideways.

Also note that Smoke Monster seems to have access to Locke’s memories (he claims he remembers John’s final thought) and that Illana claims that the smoke monster can no longer assume a form besides Locke’s. There is something more significant here than the Smoke Monster just pretending to be Locke.

Trials of Job.

Remember, Jacob told “Locke” that “Locke” couldn’t kill Sawyer.

Job 1:12 (RSV-CE): 12 And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power; only upon himself do not put forth your hand.”

Satan could do almost whatever he wanted but he couldn’t kill Job.

Maybe fake Locke needs a substitute to leave the island (hence the name of the episode). He pushed hard to convince Sawyer to join him while Sawyer was in the grip of despair. Wouldn’t it be epic if Sawyer ended up freeing the Man in Black and becoming the new smoke monster? I can just picture Sawyer raging as he dissolves into a cloud of black smoke. Jack better watch his back. 😛

Dude!!! That’s a really good theory! So MIB needs someone to take his place as the MIB of the island in order for him to be able to leave. So, in essence, MIB isn’t looking to leave with Sawyer, he’s looking to con the con-man into taking his place as a “prisoner” of the island.

That would be epic.

Ok my fellow lost fanatics, heres my crackpot theory!

all of our losties who corresponded to the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 are all destined to take Jacob’s place together as a team. Throughout the series these numbers and only these numbers appear as a group, and i think its highly significant. This is why it was so important that sayid live and that all of the “candidates” survived, that is why dogan and lennon are so adamant about kate getting sawyer back safely. obviously the only candidate who corresponded to the numbers who is now deceased is john locke. But jacob has a bit of an insurance policy…i believe alternate timeline john locke will be the substitute for on island dead locke. The title of the episode had more significance than locke being a sub teacher.

how about that

oh wow! My friend thinks Jack will be the new Jacob! Wouldn’t that be Epic if Jack became Jacob and Sawyer because MIB? haha

Jacob → allusion to God
Smoke Monster, fake “Locke” → allusion to Satan
MIB → allusion to Angels?
