It was a good episode, but there is no sense of urgency or epic action/drama that I would be expecting this late in the final season. The bar should be set higher; this would have been a great episode if there was still a season worth of episodes left.

I have the feeling that Lost is operating on a tight budget and they are conserving the epic action (and the lion share of their budget) for the final episode. I saw an article on a news website that lists the advertising cost for Lost’s final episode. It’s good, but the cost is nowhere as high as the final episode of series like Seinfeld, Mash, Raymond, etc. Lost has lost a lot of fans and probably a lot of advertising dollars as well since season 1/2.
I don’t think it has anything to do with Lost losing fans. Even the advertising for the Super Bowl was significantly decreased this year. Its the economy.

Whitmore was originally part of the Jacob crew but got kicked off by Ben. So is Whitmore really a good guy but with a vengeance against Ben for the power struggle that was seen in previous seasons?

It looks that way, but we can’t be sure since the writers haven’t told us Widmore’s intentions yet. It looks like Ben was played by MIB and Widmore is most likely sided with Jacob or is an independent player.

I think we can assume that MiB will say whatever he needs to say to achieve his ends.

Therefore, when he tells Clair that he needs them all to “get off the island” and that he needs her, he could just be saying what she wants to hear.

Some have said that Jacob made “evil” grin faces when Richard asked him about being the devil. I simply took the scene as Jacob thoughtfully considering the question, the questioner, and the accuser (MIB) before responding. He knows MiB wants to kill him and is intrigued that MiB’s “loophole” quest is getting warmer. MiB seems to know that, while he can’t personally kill Jacob, he can manipulate someone else to do so.

Interesting that Dogan warned Sayid not to let MiB speak before killing him with the dagger.

Similarly, MiB warns Richard not to let Jacob speak.

However, no such warning was given to Ben by MiB before manipulating him to kill Jacob. This kill was, as far as the viewer can tell, the only successful one of the three.

Baptism imagery: Jacob plunging a “dead” Richard into the ocean until he exclaims his desire to live, “I WANT TO LIVE!!” Jacob then says that’s the smartest thing Richard has said yet.

Poor Sayid. He is clearly despairing that he no longer feels emotion. The little flicker of life remaining in him is reaching out for help, but to the wrong person. MiB wants him as zombie. Dogan said that when the “infection” reaches Sayid’s heart, the Sayid we know and love will be gone. That hasn’t completely happened yet, I think.

I loved the scene with Jack, Richard and the dynamite. Wonderful. And the scene with Richard, Hurley, and Isabella’s soul.

This show has such magnificent acting.

Good observations dranzal. I agree the acting is generally pretty good: especially Emmerson (Ben Linus) and Terry O’Quinn (Locke). There’s room for criticism on some supporting actors (especially the character Illana for her flat performances), but on the whole its been great.

Tonight’s episode is a Desmond-centric, and I have high hopes. Desmond episodes are really great, and I think Desmond is at the heart of the plot. We’ve been told that the rules don’t apply to Desmond by both Faraday and his mother. Desmond was able to carry a message into the future when Faraday encountered Desmond at the hatch during a time flash in Season 5. That conversation with Faraday surfaced as a memory in the present day. Clearly, Desmond’s unique ability to break the rule “whatever happens, happens” will play an integral role in the end game. He must have gained this ability at the Swan implosion. Somehow he is going to be involved in entangling the Flight 815-crashes-on-the-Island universe with the Flight-815-lands-at-LAX universe.

I was not impressed with this episode; in fact, I found it quite boring

HOW!!!

The seemingly irrelevant flash sideways story lines have suddenly become relevant. Desmond is going to be the catalyst that merges the two worlds into one as they were always supposed to be.

Here are some observations:

It seems all of our losties end up in the hospital…

claire with her baby
sayid with his brother
Kate accompanying claire
sun and jin presumably are heading to the hospital because of sun’s gunshot wound
jack works at the hospital
i presume locke will at some point seek out jack to perform that surgery
and now desmond and charlie have reached the hospital

this cant be a coincidence that all these characters are going to be involved in the hospital at some point.

Desmond now has his mission, he is going to gather everyone on the flight manifest, and by seasons end the two worlds will merge into one. and i hope that the real locke will make an on island come back of some sort!

I found last night’s episode quite interesting. Notice how there was no transitional music between the island and the flash-sideways universe for Desmond (for the first jump, the music was there for that final little jump at the very end of the episode). What happened to Desmond was definitely different, and it appears he actually jumped into the alternate reality himself (as it appears he remembers the other reality).

He’s definitely the key player when it comes to bringing the two realities together.

I’m very interested to find out what Eloise knows. Of all the people in the “alternative” universe, she seems to know what is going on.

She also seems to know what’s going on in the normal universe considering that she willingly sacrificed her son Faraday by sending him into the past to be killed by her young self for some obscure reason. She guided Desmond and acted as a guru when he experienced his first time flash during the Swan implosion. She was the one who plotted how to return the Oceanic Six back to the island and arranged for Jack to make Locke’s corpse into a proxy by putting Christian’s shoes on him. This somehow caused Locke to be animated by MIB once 316 crashed on the island.

Eloise, perhaps more than Widmore, understands what is going on.

Yeah Eloise sure knows what’s going on! But HOW?
I loved last night’s episode, though it made me miss my favorite physicist even more.

Yeah, I really like Faraday (Widmore) also. And what are these rules? Desmond looking at the guest list is a violation of the rules. MIB can’t kill Jacob. Ben can’t kill Widmore…

Imho, best episode this season (and I thought the one about Richard was fabulous). I’m so excited about the remaining episodes, yet sad to see that it will end.

My favorite so far was the one featuring Sawyer and Miles as LAPD partners; it was like a show within a show. (Though the Richard episode was pretty good, I’ll admit.)

Yes, they are setting things up to have Sawyer and Miles appear on Law & Order: Los Angeles this fall. 😛

The ALT timeline has worked out well for Eloise so far. Keep in mind that this elderly Eloise is the same one who shot her own son in the 70’s. Remember, that happened just prior to the “incident”. She shot her son while pregnant with him. It was his guidance that led to the incident resulting in the ALT timeline in which he lives.

She must have gotten off the island sometime prior to it’s submersion. Now she is living happily with her family including her live son (Daniel).

Did everyone notice the painting on Widmore’s wall–scales with white on one side and black on the other.

This is the reason why I completely think it is necessary to buy the seasons on dvd. I did not notice this (enjoying the ride of the story too much). When I rewatch that’s when I begin to notice more details.👍

I agree with this, but how does she know that Desmond wasn’t ready yet? (to see the list)

I thought the episode was OK. The last couple of minutes was interesting.

It was pretty low what Sun’s dad did. Sending Jin to give Keamy the money that is Keamy’s pay to kill Jin, that is just the epitome of arrogance and “badness”.
It’s also one of the classic fairy-tale motifs–the hero is entrusted with a letter telling someone to kill him.
