Hi, I am a Filipino so that it may clear up on some questions about local customs, just ask me.

To address the previous poster concerning the customs here which would be different from “US and Europe”, yes what we practice here may be quite different.

For starters, in most churches, especially the old ones like the Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception or the Manila Cathedral, we place the titular of the church at the smack center of our retablos. Google it up for those who aren’t familiar.

Check up all our churches, but you find the old churches with the way I described the retablos.

Another tidbit of info is that the entire country was consecrated to the Immaculate Conception, the patroness of the islands.

Probably, if you notice, shrines are fashioned this way and the Cathedral is a shrine to the Immaculate Conception.

We, Filipinos have always be known as “el pueblo amante de Maria” or the “people in love with Mary” We have numerous Marian Images, check out the Nuestra Senora de La Naval or Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia.

Hope this helped:)

Where is the Tabernacle situated in the Cathedral…I wonder how many people genuflect towards the statue of the Blessed Mother because she is at the center of the church and not give it a second thought that they are supposed to genuflect towards the Tabernacle which holds the Blessed Sacrament…if that were the case it would be a cause for concern.

Catholics already know that they are to genuflect towards the tabernacle. Non-Catholics wouldn’t do it in any case, so it’s a moot point.

I know what Catholics are supposed to do…that doesn’t mean all Catholics know or do it…not all Catholics are properly catechized or even realize it…I’ve known Catholics who sincerely thought that genuflecting towards the altar or the crucifix as is in the center of most Catholic churches was the correct thing to do…I see it in our church all the time…I’ve seen it in other churches…I see Catholics who don’t genuflect at all…so not all Catholics do know where to genuflect

I’ve never seen any Catholic genuflect towards a statue no matter where it was place or how big or small it was. As for non-Catholics, they’d rather be shot than genuflect to anything, So again, you point is moot.
