Thank you Tweedlealice and Allegra; your (name removed by moderator)ut is giving me food for thought and shedding light on things for me. God bless 🙂

There was a comment earlier in the thread and I was  it read: troll. If that was directed at me I can assure you that my query is very serious and I am grateful for the serious considerate responses. God bless.
There are frequently people who come on the forums to pose a question they think will make us uncomfortable or make us appear prudish in their eyes. It’s a very common occurrence, so we’re on guard whenever a new poster with a single post asks about something dealing with sexuality. Normally, when we see a post such as your it quickly devolves into the poster repeating their questions over and over, ignoring answers that have been given to them, and doing everything they can to try to create a ‘loophole’ in Catholic teaching, or to present their "question’ in increasingly graphic ways trying to get a rise out of us.

I don’t think any offense was intended, it just happens enough to be considered routine >_>

My first post on here was sexual in nature, so I understand how uncomfortable that can make a person unaccustomed to how these forums work or unaware of how much Catholics like sex 😛 I encourage you to stick around. I’ve learned a great deal in my tenure here, these forums have help me make huge strides in my understanding of our beautiful faith!

Sex is God’s way of helping women forget petty things that annoy them about their husbands.
Yep.

And it goes the other way too. I’m far less likely to find fault with my wife when when sex is on the cards for the night. The beauty of the marital embrace makes a little mess (or even a lot) around the house seem relatively unimportant.

Enjoy yourselves and this stage in your life! I see no problem whatsoever and find it wonderful you and your husband are re-bonding so to speak in this manner.

God bless you and your family.

Mary.

To some extent, good marital relations are a drug. Not that it’s a bad thing, but there are certain chemical changes that alter moods and so forth. If it makes both happy and accepting of certain things than have at it (with care).

I just read the episode summaries of Outlander. Druidic rituals, demonic possession, bad luck charms, rape. Don’t you have anything better to do with your time than consume this trash? How about prayer, or EWTN? Shut off the premium cable and donate to charity?

I met the author of the Outlander books Then it went on TV, but I don’t watch it because I only have basic cable. There are a lot of books on this particular story-it just goes on about a Scottish clan and it can get pretty interesting. I read one of the books, and my daughter just loves Diana Gabaldon, who wrote these long sagas.

Sort of romantic, but a lot of action. It seems to take a lot of time to write these books because they are very thick. I have wondered how she keeps track of all the characters. I’d love to see the outline.

Unless we want to live in a cave with no social contact, we will all be exposed to some sort of media that is sexual in nature. Commercials, sitcoms, reality shows, magazines, newspapers, the internet, all will at some point post something that is sexual in nature and may excite us.
It happens to me and my husband all the time. We are visual creatures. Plain and simple.
And I agree with PianistClare: What is the problem??

Have sex every night and enjoy it while you can. Thank God you have the marriage that allows this physical contact to overcome some of the other issues. Hold tight to each other! We never know when that night may be your last together!

These are all things over which you have control. Exercise a little judgement over what you consume. I know it is not easy when you have a television and it is perpetually squawking, “look at me! Keep watching this!” I was addicted to television and other media from an early age, and it takes quite a bit of willpower to avoid being sucked in, but it is rewarding. My home is more peaceful. I don’t invite pornography or lascivious trash into it. I regularly evaluate and cull things which are not leading me to personal holiness and glorification of God. If you don’t, and you pretend that you have no control over what goes in your eyes and ears, then prepare yourself for an uphill struggle, because the media we consume shapes our thoughts and feelings, our vocabulary and emotions. What occupies your thoughts of the day? The latest McDonald’s jingle? That Game of Thrones scene that titillated you in just the right way? Who or what do you worship?

I read now the progressive left is getting upset over Game of Thrones rape scenes and some have said they will stop watching. Guess it was about time.

I only have basic cable so don’t watch any of these shows. I don’t think I am missing much. If the show doesn’t have perverted sex or violence I think it may be ok to watch. It’s hard to find a show now that doesn’t have sex or violence in it. I mainly watch the news shows and reality shows that have a good message like 19 Kids and Counting. I have tried to turn channels to see what is on but I see so much violence I have to turn the channel before I even know what the shows are.

I a 68 now and don’t have much libido left so enjoy it while you can. It will be different once you go through menopause. My husband is seven years younger than I am so I really need to be thoughtful of him and I try. If those shows or books help you than use them. I like romantic music myself and that helps me alone with added hormones. LOL

Sex does help a couple get over spats, etc to be close, I have noticed that in my marriage. I don’t think there is anything wrong with using it to get over some problems. Like others have said, if the problems are huge no amount of sex will help but if the problems are just on the surface getting closer to each other this way will be good.

Hi there, I am needing some (name removed by moderator)ut and direction. My husband and I have had a very moderate marital bed activity sometimes 1x/month or more frequent. We have lately been fighting a lot about various things. I have been unhappy with him for his “parenting” and his weight and other things. Recently I viewed a tv show (you may know it, Outlander). Ever since completing the first season I have had a heightened desire for intimacy with my husband. We engaging in the marital embrace nightly. It has made things better for us during the day. We’ve stopped fighting and can even laugh and joke about stuff. We seem to be more connected and less argumentitive. I have mostly forgotton all my grievances with him and seem to be in a marital bliss/honeymoon situation. I am frequently thinking about him and get very excited when he arrives home past midnight hoping we can be together again. Its crazy. Its like overboard passion. Is this ok or normal? Can I say things to him about his private parts and it be ok (ok, I am alluding to dirty talk here). I am very embarrassed as this is a bedroom private thing and I am truly looking for (name removed by moderator)ut. Thank you for your prayerful responses. I am writing quickly as I have six kids and am needed to for various things so I am sorry if this is too brief. Thank you again. I appreciate your responses. 🙂
I don’t see what the problem is. You and your husbam d love life has improved. You are married it is moral to catholic values for husband and wife to be intimate with eachother. You are thinking too much. Kust enjoy you amd your husbands new foumd passion for eachother.

Again, very grateful for ALL your responses. I must have thought there was a problem as I was mentally anguishing that I was possessed or something. I confess, I did not take communion last Sunday and the Wednesday before (when I had the opportunity) because I really thought I had sinned (watching AND enjoying the show) and then the great excitement that followed that lasted for days and continues. Just so their is no misleading-- I am not dwelling on the show or the scenes to conjure up excitement; my thoughts are on my husband and communion w/him. God Bless, I am so appreciative of the (name removed by moderator)ut!

Watching and enjoying sexually stimulating shows is wrong, and it is good that you are dropping it. It seems like it is a little on the soft porn/erotic side, which is not healthy and yes, sinful.

Loving your husband is great! Just don’t get yourself excited by watching impure shows first.

Read up on lust in marriage (Christopher West, Saint John Paul II), it can help you make sure you are focusing on love and not lust. That being said, enjoy giving yourself to your spouse and him giving himself to you, there is nothing wrong with that, God made us that way and He put pleasure in sex. If you get rid of the outside influences you can get rid of (like reading or watching sexually stimulating things) it will be easier to love your spouse purely.

Hi,
There was a time the only thing I read or experienced were holy things. My husband called me a fanatic He told my children to just tolerate me. I was very close to Jesus. I heard His voice and He directed my paths…I was feeling holy and didn’t feel wifely. We had marital problems big time. God healed our marriage. But, I had to pull back on my Bible study and prayer group. I had no libido w my anger towards him (spare you long story) So, I started reading romance books. This was so long ago they were innocent. Just a kiss at the end. They sneakingly added more touchy feely stuff. But it wasn’t innundated with it. Always had a great historical story line. I could slide over anything sexually graphic. Love Irish and Scottish Romances. Story lines are really good. ’
Outlander=read all books. Above is all true except demonic possession. I didn’t read it or see it yet. It was gentler reading the books than watching the show. Visually, it is more violent. But it is how the Brits treated the Irish and the Scots. Genocide is terrible to watch. There is a beauty in Jamie and Claire’s romance…The sexual violence is not stimulating. It is sickening. But, it is truth. I just wish when they are ripping the clothes off the women they would leave most of the breasts covered. As I said reading was easier on the psyche. You learn the recipe for blood sausage. Yulk. There has to be balance I found. One should be married when reading these books.

in Christ’s love

I am 67 and an orthopedic cripple in constant pain. mY husband is 73yo on oxygen.
Romance is still something he requests. It is different in old age. We need all the help we can get. 🤷

If you are angry with your husband chose your words very carefully then wait 2 weeks to say what’s on your mind. If it still needs to be said be as charitable as possible. Words that come out of your mouth can destroy your husband and marriage.

I don’t think historical romances can hurt your marriage. There are also religious romance stories out there to read. It’s up to you to decide.

I even talked to a priest in confession about watching porn. He told me if the wife needed that than it was ok. Now on Catholic answers they would say all porn is bad, so what are we to believe? As long as you are having intercourse, my hubby was told most things between husband and wife was ok. If it’s ok with the two of you, I get the feeling priests do not want to be involved in the marital bed.

At some point you need to decide what is best for you and your husband. Seems to me you are doing just fine. Six kids and still time to have romance, who can ask for more?

that anger was a long time ago in the 49yrs we’ve been together.teehee

Just wanted to add. Porn is bad any way you see it, because of what it distorts. So dont think it is not, I know that maybe you are stating just the situation you had, but that’s why I am just clarifying it.

If you want to know a good book that states the correct approach of sexuality read Love and Responsibility by Karol Wojtyla.

On my understandings, the book talks about the sex drive and what is love. Love has two parts, the subjective (affectivity and sensuality) and the objective part. The objective part is to affirm the value of the person (and is the most important one), and is the one that corrects any action, because it takes the protection of the person as north. The sex drive makes the body an object of use. And persons can never be used (because it is the “best good”). Thats why love changes using to loving (when true love, meaning Gods love is the one leading, of course).

About Self mastery from the book:
"Every man in himself must appropriately manage the energies that are latent in his sensuality and affectivity so that they become allies in pursuing true love for they can also be, as is well known, its enemies.
The reason directly founding the fact of moral duty, is the dignity of the person.
Continence is the habit of restraining the concupiscence of the flesh by the will, the ability to moderate effectively the sensations connected with the reactions of sensuality and even of affectivity, is an indispensable method of self mastery, although it does not yet determine the full realization of virtue, as it cannot be an end in itself.
Objectivization without continence by no means could one be called self possessed or chaste.
Objectivization: acknowledging the objective order connected with the lived experience of truth about values. The lived experience of truth in relation to values.
Mastering the concupiscence of the flesh is worthy of the person. If he does not do this he jeopardizes his natural perfection; he allows what is inferior to and dependent on him to act in him, and even more, he subjects himself to it.
This mastery not only aims at the perfection of the person who pursues it, but also at the realization of love in the world of persons and above all in the reciprocal relation between persons of different sex.
The very essence of moderation is unequivocal : whoever has not attained it is not self-possessed and temperate- therefore is not chaste.

There is no mature abstinence without acknowledging the objective order of values: the value of the person stands above the values of the sexus. The point here is practical acknowledgement , i.e., one that influence action."

That priest was SO wrong! It’s NEVER ok for a husband or wife to watch porn (even “soft” porn) before having sex with each other. Not even to “get in the mood.” You don’t look at somebody else’s spouse naked to get ready to see your own spouse naked! That’s adultery of the heart which Jesus says is as bad as adultery of the flesh.

If you don’t get turned on by looking at your own spouse naked and pationately kissing, caressing and stimulating each other, then you have MUCH bigger problems that need attending to ASAP in marriage counseling.

I agree porn is bad since it only focuses on the sex and not the emotions. In fact the best sex one can have is to do things slowly and find out what your spouse wants and needs from you.

Watching porn…or anything else to get you in the mood…is basically akin to bringing a third party into the marriage.

I don’t see how it’s any different for a husband or wife to bring in another person into the marriage.

Whether it’s asking for a threesome, asking for an open marriage, or having an affair…it’s the same thing as watching porn…whether it’s with each other or on their own…in secret or not.
