I really enjoyed this post. I think that the phrasing “open to life” can be taken into so many directions, but you really hit a ‘sticking point’ with the fact that Church will not take away the right of the couple to avoid having children.I question what some people mean by the phrase “open to life”.
Being “open to life” does not necessarily mean seeking out new life all the time. It means that, once pregnant, the couple rejoices in the new life they have created together with God.
Being co creators with God is not passive. It is active. We now know that a woman is fertile for only a short time each month. Those trying to conceive a child actively participate in the marriage act to the end of being co creators with God at that time. There is a biological fact occurring that the couple is cooperating with.
Since the Church has not, and will not, publish a list of grave/serious/just reasons to avoid conception, it is up to the couple. If a couple decides to try to avoid a pregnancy because of reasons that are serious to them, but get pregnant anyway (due to misinterpretation of a chart, a “what the heck” night, or God reaches down and makes it happen) and they rejoice, how are they *not *“open to life” ?
This idea that the Church requires a couple to engage in relations on a certain night is really weird.
Avoiding childbirth is not locking the door so that God may not come in, it’s more like glorifying God by using our best judgement.
