Marrying a man twice your age

With all respects, this post makes no sense. Looking young is chopped up to genetics, not where you live.

Many women all over the world look younger and it’s due to longer telomeres, not the climate or city one is from.

Perhaps women look younger in Cali due to plastic surgery is more like it.

I see red flags in a 40 something man dating a 21 or 22 year old woman. I just do. Forgive me for caring…but I see lots of red flags and I’m not alone. The divorce rate of this type of union is 80% for a reason.

EDITED TO ADD:
Runwaymodel, I’d like to concede a little bit. This guy could be the right one for you and I’d say keep dating him and see where things go. If he proposes, you could always have a long engagement? My engagement was almost 2 years.
I have to agree with the poster ‘faithfully’ on this one, Serap. Los Angeles does have some of the most gorgeous people you will ever encounter (without surgery as well). Beautiful people from all over the world come there to 'make it big. I find it sad though, that many of these people don’t get their fufillment at Church. It helps keep me grounded.

Are you encouraging her to sleep around? What kind of comment is THIS for a Catholic forum? (If you meant something else, I will stand corrected, but “sewing wild oats” is an expression for males being sexually active with someone (or many someones) other than their wife prior to marriage).
I agree with you. I have no desire to do that whatsoever, and I am thankful that the man I am with is willing to respect my beliefs and wait until marriage. 🙂

Hello Runway Model (again):

I realize you are swamped here by your topic but you never answered my first post. My question to you was what your partner sees in you, what is your attractiveness to him?

You may recall that one of the beatitudes that Jesus spoke of was “Blessed are the poor…” Fr. Barron has an interesting take on this as follows:

“And so Jesus says: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). This is neither a romanticizing of economic poverty nor a demonization of wealth, but rather a formula for detachment. Might I suggest a somewhat variant rendition: how blessed are you if you are not attached to material things, if you have not placed the goods that wealth can buy at the center of your concern? When the Kingdom of God is your ultimate concern, not only will you not become addicted to material things; you will, in fact, be able to use them with great effectiveness for God’s purposes.”

I once had a discussion with a friend who married an older man. He passed away quite suddenly from a massive heart attack. Once again, she had married for the security of the older man (He was a doctor). She found that after getting married that she gradually found herself losing all of her college friends. She explained that she thought it was because she and her husband simply couldn’t share in the money struggles that other people her age (i.e., her friends) were facing. They tended to fall into HIS friends and HIS aquaintances as they matched better with their eoonomic circumstances. Do you see the story?

What seems to be a blessing turned out to be a regret, an isolating set of circumstances for the younger woman. What problems do you see looking forward? You’re obviously doing something against the cultural grain: We marry those in our age group. Love seems to dictate this. Love can be corrupted of course and money is an obvious factor in that. How is your love not a corruption? What makes you unique?
With all due respect, I do not understand how you believe that our love can be corruptable because of money. I want someone more success financially than myself, there is nothing wrong with this. I agree that some people can be corrupted by money, but I am letting you know with me that is not the case, I have already obtained monetary success on my own. I cannot predict how our future will turn out, I am leaving that in the hands of God. I can tell you that what attracts me to him is his confidence, chivalry, work ethic, respect towards others, love of animlas, kindness despite his status,he is so loving and caring, always asks about my family, good Lord, I can go on and on. …
As for him, he likes the fact that I am very religious, family oriented, sweet despite my career status, level-headed, give to several charities, kind, ambitious, very opinionated, have a strict set of morals which he says is rare these days, grounded despite my beauty (his words, not mine) nuturing, humble…these are a few things. Of course if you want more, you would have to ask him yourself. I feel very awkward even typing that stuff about myself because I feel like I have to ‘sell myself’. And by that I mean sell my attributes and good traits to others. I do not like having to attempt to explain myself.

I guess I am an older man. I am in my forties. It’s not the years. it’s the mileage. I don’t mean to sound sexist. I have daughters and I will give you the advice I give them. Considering how lousey the pickings are among males these days, you might do well to marry an older man. You don’t have to waste time waiting for him to grow up and figure out what he wants. If you really love him and he loves you, then pray on it and go with what you believe God wishes for you. Trust me dear, from how you described him, you could do so much worse. You are in my prayers dear.
Thank you so much.

Runwaymodel, I hardly think I have to post this, because I think you get it, but I’ll write it anyway.

I think it was a good idea to start this thread, just to give yourself a broader range of items to think about. Finding that range of items was prudent. In terms of those whose opinions you put trust in, however, trust those who know you well and have actually met this fellow. When it comes to making a decision about marriage, you will be ready only when you have reached the point where your ultimate authority on that decision is you, and you are ready to back your own decision on that question against all comers.

There is no prohibition on a young woman marrying a much older man. The truth is, tradition has it that the Holy Family was such a family. I hardly need to say that there have been many such marriages over the ages that were not Josephite, either. The difficulties in such a marriage are different and I have to say that they are probably greater. Those who jump without looking have suffered. Still, among those who counted the cost before making the leap, the arrangement has been done and done very well. I think you get both ends of that consideration.

When all is said and done, this thread will end because you decide you’re hearing nothing new, and you stop replying. I think you’ll find your answer by continuing to see this man and discerning yourselves whether a marriage is the best way for each of you to live out the call God has for you and to pursue eternal life. Then you and he will each make your decisions and, in your case at least, rely on God to live with whatever you decide.

May God bless you and bring you into a happy and fruitful marriage, with a husband that pleases Him as much as you.

Your post is dead on, EasterJoy. I actually really do appreciate all the opinions and advice from all the good people who replied. I am so thankful for a forum like this because it is very difficult for me to talk about this with my peers who do not have the same religious ethics as myself and who do not understand the importance of waiting until marriage, not moving in with my guy, and that I don’t believe in divorce. Thank you all so much, even though I may not seen like it sometimes, I hear and understand all your comments and a lot of them I am taking into consideration. Forgive me if at times I seen defensive or stubborn. 🙂
God bless!

One last question from me:

Is he willing to get tested for STDs? I assume that he has not remained chaste all his single life. If you do get married, he will be getting a pure spouse but you won’t be. Maybe that’s too personal, but you gotta be practical. A lot of stuff gets traded around these days.

My husband is twelve years older. It has never been the slightest issue, other than we quickly had our children because of his age so he could be young enough to enjoy them. I wouldn’t change a thing!
Age isn’t the potential problem I see with the OP’s situation; I’d be more concerned about his focus on work and how that could affect his involvement with their marriage and children.

A health history is a very good thing to ask about, including STDs, in the interest of having all of the information one deserves to have when the question of marriage comes up. Still, one of the great blessings of not getting physical too soon is that one can afford to wait before broaching this subject.

It is possible, by the way, to get diseases that are usually spread via sexual contact via other means. It does not hurt anyone to get tested, even when you are certain you “can’t” have anything. Better not to be defensive about it. Good decisions come when you start with good information.

I have mentioned this before: I am not a virgin but have been chaste since I reconnected with my Catholic faith a few years ago. :o
That being said, what you suggest is actually a very good recommendation, TheRealJuliane. I think that is a very fair request to ask of him in the future. I will not forget that. Thank you.

I apologize for getting so personal. Like many here on the forum, I wish you the best! Praying for you!

👍

It’s also a little easier since you will both want to get tested before you marry. It makes it into a health question, not a question of superiority.

Runaway model…do you think that maybe there’s a possiblity that he is having casual sex with a friend? I’m just asking b/c many men are not capable of being chaste in a relationship.

Please forgive me if this question upsets you. This is something else to consider before marriage as well b/c the Catholic Church also asks for couples to be chaste within marriage (i.e.; no porn, masturbation, no birth control, etc.).

This is precisely why I gave this guy thumbs up! I don’t know whether Rwm can know for sure what he is or not doing in private but if she has any kind of certainty that he is truly keeping chaste for her than this man is gold!

There are Catholic men who cannot do that for their wives so if a non-Christian does it for a woman from whom he has no formal commitment, then it truly speaks volumes!!!

Sure he’s not in the hormone-raging teen period but chastity ( not just abstinence) is ALWAYS hard and if it is already at the root of their relationship than I can’t imagine any challenge harder to overcome! I see a promising marriage if that is the case!

No, Serap, your question does not upset me. It actually really makes me appreciate him all the more. I know sometimes he does get restless by even a simple thing like just taking my hand and looking at me, so he goes for a jog. He works out quite a bit and that helps release whatever tension he has. He’s been so good and respectful, and I have no doubt he is not doing anything with anyone else. He is much more affectionate and romantic than I am and he still stares at me in that same loving way like when we started dated. Its quite cute.

1inICXC, he is a Catholic man, he just doesn’t go to Church every Sunday. He adores the fact that I am very religious–he says its one of the things he likes about me the most. I do take him to Church with me if I am not out of town, though. 👍

Runwaymodel,

You seem really sure about this guy, so why don’t you just go for it? If you really love him and he really loves you, then why remain in a holding pattern?

Why not just go for it?

Do you think he’s going to propose anytime soon?

I’m turning 35 in a couple of weeks, so I’m still fairly shy of 40. My most recent ex is 36. The ex before that is 31. And the ex before that, is 28.

I’m trying to imagine having a fruitful relationship with a 20-year old. I can’t. I don’t want to feel like a daddy to my wife. I want to be evenly yoked. Heck, there were maturity issues when I dated the 28 year old. Maybe it’s just me, but that’s my experience. Take it for what it’s worth. 🤷

Yes, you’re right, it is easier when there are more similarities than differences. I’d say it is necessary that both parties see their relationship as adult-adult and not adult-child or adult-parent. It is also necessary to be old enough to truly engage in a give and take that does not keep score.

You’ve been divorced three times, though? Evenness in the yoke cannot make up for the how much each of the yoke mates gives and accomodates the other. I say this as someone married to a fellow 8 years my senior. Although an age gap can increase the give and take required, it is the naturalness and generosity of how your gives and your takes complement each other that matter in the end. IMHO, that is the ticket.

Huh??? Noooooononono, by ex’s I mean ex-girlfriends.

I do have my suspicions that he is going to propose but I just felt like I needed advice and perspectives from a third party, which is why I came here again. :grouphug:

I agree with that. The relationship has to be on equal terms, unlike a adult-child/adult parent like EasterJoy reasonably pointed out. People have different maturity levels. I have friends my age that still act like they’re in middle school, Bless their hearts, or elderly people that have more energy than a 30 yr old. It all depends on how the 2 people dating get along and compliment one another. Just because I am with a gentleman much older than myself doesn’t guarantee that I would mesh with another man his age. Its all about personalities.

Oh right! I had an ex like that, in that he would not practice on his own but was very happy that I went to church, would sometimes come with me and would even be very disappointed with me when i skipped. I could never really wrap my head around that one. Hopefully your guy will eventually just jump on board, my ex didn’t seem like he was going to so I cut my loss and happily moved on 🙂

Test him…point to women over 40 and ask him, “Do you think she’s beautiful / sexy?”

Ask him in a very casual way though…dont’ sound jealous, just curious.

Or try and bait him by saying, “Don’t you think it’s disgusting that so many women let themselves go especially after having kids?”

Or, “Do you think it’s ok that women get a mommy make-over after having babies?” (i.e., tummy tuck, breast augmentation)

See what his answers are and analyze them.
lol. you wouldn’t have to analyze too deeply. If he doesn’t see through those “casual” questions right away, you know for certain he’s actually a cyborg and you should destroy him immediately.

Like a lot of extremely successful and affluent men, the reason he has not yet married is because he is quite the workaholic.
I just noticed this comment…

I think this is a false perception. I’m not going to spout off all of my credentials, but believe me when I tell you that I know a lot of successful workaholics. Everything from top doctors and lawyers to successful politicians and entrepreneurs. Very few of them are single past 40.

I’m not making any judgments about your man, just pointing out that when you get to a certain age, being a workaholic is rarely the only reason a person is still single.
