Mary a heavenly mother?

To Catholics, Mary, as the Mother of Jesus, is our spiritual mother. She is the Mother of God, and the Mother of the Church (in a spiritual, not literal sense). Christ as our elder brother in the Faith, has given us, by our adoption into God’s family, His mother to be our mother as well.

For Mormons, Mary does not occupy this role. There is, as we have established on another thread, an unnamed Heavenly Mother who is married to God the Father. Now a thought occured to me tonight. Joseph was a holy man, so is it not possible, even likely, that he is now a god, with his own world? And if this is so, and since marriage is eternal in Mormonism, Mary would still be his wife. Thus, Mary could be the Heavenly Mother of another world. I know this is pure speculation, but is this in theory possible in Mormonism?
 
The speculation as to who , how, why and where of the Heavenly Mothers and Fathers, is endless. Trying to get answers for nearly all that LDS believe is like nailing jello to a wall. Progression is a serious belief of LDS and yet when you ask who the father of our God is/was,and his father before him, etc., no one can answer. It is to be believed without any kind of proof. The new prophet can totally change anything and everything if he chooses, getting the o.k. from God directly. It would be difficult at best to be a really good LDS knowing that what you believe today can be “toast” tomorrow.

I have LDS friends and my husband is ex-LDS, now Catholic. Hubby had great mis-givings about the prophets and changing beliefs. He says that LDS cannot write a “Catachism” such as we have because it would have to be re-written at least every year.

Strictly speculation - and reading from what is now strictly speculative theology of Orson Pratt and Brigham Young in the Journal of Discourses - it’s Pratt who says:
Whether God the Father gave Mary to Joseph for time only, or for time and eternity, we are not informed. Inasmuch as God was the first husband to her, it may be that He only gave her to be the wife of Joseph while in this mortal state, and that He intended after the resurrection to again take her as one of his own wives to raise up immortal spirits in eternity

So - purely speculatively - from Pratt’s POV the Mormons don’t know if Mary was given to Joseph for time, or for time and eternity, but, if for eternity, then what you postulate could very well be true without (I think) ‘upsetting’ LDS doctrine at all.

I would imagine, though, that there is very little thought given Mary in LDS theology. I think that she was just another woman - although one that may have been married to God the Father - and not a woman “full of grace” as we know her to be!

The God of Israel is Jesus’ Father ([Matt. 11:27](file:///C:/Program%20Files/Jesus_site/pages/Scriptures/Matthew_11-27.html)), while Mary became Jesus’ human mother ([Luke 1:43](file:///C:/Program%20Files/Jesus_site/pages/Scriptures/Luke_1_43.html)). This is why the Catholic Church calls Mary the “Mother of God” (CCC 495) since she is the mother of the second divine Person, God the Son. Mary is not a “Mother god” since she is only human - a creature of God. She is not the feminine side of God. Nor is she the mother of the Persons: God the Father or God the Holy Spirit. Jesus was not ashamed of claiming the God of Israel as His Father. He was accused of blasphemy and eventually died for this claim (John 5:18; 19: 7-8).

At the foot of the Cross there were his mother and the disciple John. Jesus knew that Mary was not the mother of John. And Jesus was not telling a lie from the Cross when he proclaimed Mary the mother of the disciple, and the disciple the son of his mother… on the contrary, Jesus was talking about a glorious truth: From the Cross, Jesus was giving us his Mother, to be our Mother. We were all represented at the foot of the Cross in the “disciple” on that day and beyond.

In His book Mary and Your Everyday Life, theologian Bernard Haring says: "The Church cannot come to a full understanding of union with Christ and service to the gospel without a profound love and knowledge of Mary, the Mother of our Lord and ourselves, " As Vatican II puts it: “At the message of the angel, the Virgin Mary received the Word of God in her heart and in her body, and gave life to the world. Hence, she is acknowledged and honored (Note# not to be worshiped) as being truly the Mother of God and Mother of the Redeemer” (The Church,53)

Mary is a tribute to all motherhood. The importance of a Mother to her child is a bond like none other. Jesus’s bond to our Church can be seen in Mary. Eve said “no” to Gods will and brought forth death for the whole of the human race. Mary on the other hand said “Yes” to Gods will and brought forth life for the whole of the human race.

Mary represents the New Eve. Mary…our mother, who saw her own Son die for the rest of her children, is waiting and helping in the preparation of building us a new home in heaven.

(Mt 1:23): “Behold the virgin shall be with child and bear a son. And they shall name Him Emanuel,” Which translated means “God is with us.”

([Luke 1:43](file:///C:/Program%20Files/Jesus_site/pages/Scriptures/Luke_1_43.html)) Elizabeth calls her “Mother of my Lord.” In the NT, “Lord” refers only to God.

(Luke 1:35) “the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.”

The angel calls her “full of grace,” and one who has “found favor with God” (Lk 1:28, 30 RSVCE); Elisabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit calls her “blessed among women” and Mary herself declares that “all generations shall call me blessed”
In following Scripture, like Cupids arrow through our hearts, we will always love her and call Mary Blessed.

She has a very special home in our hearts, we along with the Saints and Mother Mary are all connected to the one Spirit, to the [**One Body of Christ **](file:///C:/Program%20Files/Jesus_site/pages/Body_Christ.html)…the Vine.

I have a wonderful gift that was given to me as I attended the RICA six years ago.

-Mary in my life-

I am with her along with the entire Holy Family at the foot of the Cross. I see this clearly as I receive Communion.

I love Her very Much she is spiritual Mother and She is so pity on us She is so meek with us and always accept us even we are so sinner and so selfish sometime. She always look after us. I get lot of blessing by Mother Mary. She always save me and I believe if I am alive on the Earth its because Mother Mary love is with me who take care me.
She has special place in my heart. I am spell bond to express my complete love with Her.

I don’t believe that Mary is my mother or the mother of the church. Jesus Christ is the head of the church of all his believers that he founded upon himself (Petros). Mary was chosen by God for a special purpose. The angel Gabriel said about Mary, “whom God highly favors”. Jesus is divine because he is God in the great mystery of the Trinity. Mary is not divine nor a part of salvation. She is a foremost of all saints but she cannot do anything for us that we cannot do for ourselves.

And if god has had no experience with women, how could he understand women? I would imagine that in the heavens, heavenly father and heavenly mother discuss a great deal about their spirit children on earth. And both can relate to the particular sex to which they belonged.

But I would hate to think that god has always been a batchelor and missed out on all the fun of being with women and having the opportunity to be married to a woman. 🙂
 
This thread is two years old. Most of the people posted in it originally are no longer here. Why would anyone want to go and dig it up?

As long as one is in thrall to the ridiculous notion that “god” must be a man, however more “elevated and powerful” than those yet on earth, then it is no wonder that the idea of “god” being a bachelor even runs through one’s mind.

If, otoh, God is truly acknowledged as SPIRIT having no beginning or end (no moment of being created by another "god’), of being omniscient (thus knowing His creatures, be they male or female, far more intimately than they know themselves), one, then, can truly worship, not succumbing to idolatry of the self writ large.
 
i wonder if Mary is anything as hot as the pictures portray her? 😊

ah probably not. if Joseph really endured an entire lifetime of sleeping beside her without sex. 😃

There is no such thing as a heavenly mother. There is no distinction made by sex, race, slave, or free in the Kingdom of Heaven. We are all one including Mary.

Do Catholics believe that there is a queen of heaven?
