I don’t really know if I regard her at the Mother of all Christians. I am still thinking on it. I think there is some plausibility to the argument. But still not entirely convinced.
At least you are asking and hopefully gaining a better understanding of the Catholic faith. Keep in mind, Catholics are not the only Christians who hold the Blessed Virgin Mary in high regard or ask for her intercession. Many Anglicans and Lutherans do as well.

I did find your other thread and posted there. 🙂

Peace,
Anna

Hi Christ Bearer!

I wanted to welcome you to the forums and invite to go to Mass and see for yourself how we worship God and finally witness with your own eyes the Eucharist. I appreciate your respect and kindness on the forum so far and I hope that everyone joins me in praying for you so that your journey will fruitful. You are indeed blessed because you seem to have an open mind and are truly searching for the Truth which should always be the ultimate goal.

God Bless You!

"While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matthew 12:46-50 ESV)
JL: whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother. Christ is not deflecting from the preeminence of His mother. He is emphasizing those who do the will of God are as dear to Him as a brother, sister or mother. Mary’s preeminence comes not only from being mother of God, but more from DOING the will of God.
and also: "As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (Luke 11:27-28 ESV)
JL: Again Christ is not deflecting from His mothers preeminence but the same as Mt12:46-50. It’s more BLEST to be BORN AGAIN in spiritual relationship with Christ than just a flesh or natural relative. Christ doesn’t deny Mary is blessed for bearing and suckling Him but twice blessed because she also heard and keep His Word.

Lk1:44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 And BLESSED IS SHE THAT BELIEVED: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. 46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour

Thanks for the encouragement. I am always seeking truth for sure. I want to keep digging. Please pray for me. This is all VERY new to me.

People all want help…you have been given alot of sound and good answers…God bless you and keep you in prayer.

Wow…I just wanted to comment here. Not to take anything away from the OP but I have learned so much from this discussion. I was raised Roman Catholic but never understood some of the teachings as a child/teenager and married a Protestant. Last month I felt the Church tugging at my heart and started to attend Mass for the first time in 17 years. I have learned so much…how ignorant I’ve been and I feel really sad that I didn’t have this understanding of Mary sooner. Thank you all for helping me to better understand!

Here is the quote that you provided from the Bible:

"While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
(Matthew 12:46-50 ESV)

Jesus said that whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, sister and mother. Do Christians do the will of God the Father? Are they not then brothers and sisters of Jesus? Catholics believe that Mary followed the will of God the Father perfectly. This is one of the reasons She is the perfect Mother of all Christians.

Thanks for the encouragement. I am always seeking truth for sure. I want to keep digging. Please pray for me. This is all VERY new to me.
Take it from someone who has been there. Take your time. You can’t eat a gourmet meal in one sitting, so put some things on the back burner and deal with those later. You can spend a lifetime digging into the rich history of the Catholic Church.
Happy reading.

TwinBoysRachel…

Welcome to CAF! It is a great blessing to learn more about Mary and to see her as our companion in daily life to live better the will of God.

She has many titles. But the best, and the one she likes the most, is “Mother”.

Posts like this show what our apologists are doing here on CAF is more than worthwhile. 👍
Welcome to the forums Rachel.

When God touched my heart and the wall of anti-Catholicism was demolished, praying the Hail Mary was the first act I performed.
I remember it vividly. My whole world was shaken. In a moment of time God ‘mugged me from behind’ and the truth of the Catholic Church shown like a light in darkness. When I got home that night, I went into my bedroom alone and closed the door. That night I did something that I hadn’t done in two decades. I prayed the Lord’s Prayer and the Hail Mary.
The Lord’s Prayer was easy, that I had done many times before. I was scared to death to pray the Hail Mary. It was like kissing my wife for the first time. It was something I wanted to do and years of bigotry were overcome. After I was done, the Holy Spirit filled me with a joy I cannot describe.
A weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I felt at peace for the first time in many years.
WOW!👍

Well, of course there is a level of doubt regarding it, from our perspective, as there is no command or promise regarding it. But I would never claim that there is fabrication involved.
Nor do I believe that God would close His love to a prayer for His grace, simply because it was directed to His saints.

Jon
Jon, as always, a well-reasoned answer. The “fabrication” assertions have crept into a few denominations that later split off from even those who split off from the reformers. Clearly, they are far off the path. Yet, the Saints not only pray, but also bear prayers to our Father, and their prayers and efforts cannot be without effect.

But how is it that you can say Mary is closer to God when we are filled with and led by His Spirit (Rom. 8) and we are in total union with Christ (Rom. 6)? Isn’t that the point of being united with him, justified by faith, so that we now have access into this grace in which we stand (Rom.6)?
JL: Yes we all have the indwelling Holy Spirit but we are not ALL at the same spiritual and faith level. Haven’t you GROWN since you first became Christian? Don’t you know a person or persons in your own faith group whom you or others seek out to pray for you, or someone you love in need, because their faith is stronger and they seem to be closer to God than others? We may all be FILLED with the Holy Spirit but our capacity could be a quart and another’s a gallon yet they are both filled.
Where in the Bible can we find evidence of anyone venerating Mary? At the beginning of the book of Acts we see the disciples praying WITH Mary, not praying TO Mary (Acts 1:14).
We VENERATE MARY for what God has done to her. [Lk1:48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from **henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me GREAT THINGS; and holy is his name.]

What are some of those GREAT thingS God has done to Mary?

And if I may add to this, we are not only children of God, but the “Body of Christ”. If we are the Body of Christ then Mary is certainly our mother and we are commanded to honor her.

Yes, I would agree with you. And thank you for your kindness.
Yet, the Saints not only pray, but also bear prayers to our Father, and their prayers and efforts cannot be without effect
I think i would agree that prayer has an effect, as they are heard by our gracious Father in Heaven. And the prayers of His saints in Heaven do, as well, regardless whether they are the result of invocation from those in the Church Militant or not.
