Non-sequitur.Just ask them if Eve chose to disobey God. She did, she had free-will. Mary also has free-will. But she chose to obey God. That is why she is the New Eve.

Indeed, she was given the revelation of God. This resulted from the state of her soul being “full of grace”. She had given her “yes” to God all her life, and thus was hailed by the angel Gabriel as "Full of Grace’, a title, not a personal name. This is the state of a person who is filled with grace, always saying “yes” to God. The attitude of humble obedience she demonstrated was nothing new, but demonstrates the quality of her relationship with God.Mary was told. She acknowledge it would be done, according to His Will.
I’m sorry, but you’re reading something into the text which is not there in the first place.Indeed, she was given the revelation of God. How does that make her “not human like us”? Do you believe that God originally created humans with sin? do you think the fact that we are under the effects of original sin are not “human”?Hi Jon
Yes, if you consider Mary was human like all of us, then certainly she would have the free will to do so, however the Catholic church’s “Mary” was/is apparently *not *human like all of us…they present her as someone born without sin.
Leeann really does have an attitude on this point, but try to consider the source. She has loved one’s who are apparently (by her account) idolaters and worshippers of Mary, so she has gotten a very skewed perception of what a healthy relationship with the Theotokos might be.I meant Leeann’s comments.
Yes…this is the Catholic church’s “Mary” and her role with the Catholic church.I did read the other posts but if you don’t like the answers given to you about “their” Mary, then fine but it’s the actual truth: Mary is a mere atom compared to her Son. Since you are quoting from the CCC, read this: 964 Mary’s role in the Church is inseparable from her union with Christ and flows directly from it.
As Irish Catholic has already clearly pointed out by quoting from the catechism of the Catholic church and to which I thanked him/her for doing and have already responded too – it shows that it is not that they don’t believe Mary doesn’t need a Savior, but that they teach that Mary’s redemption came at the time of her conception….by the merits of Jesus…(not verbatim- just short to save time)….so in affect she was pre-redeemed before the time Jesus was born , was crucified and rose from the dead. I have always believed that Mary, just like everyone else needed the redemption that was offered through Jesus’ blood sacrifice. And that is the difference in the “Mary’s”.If Catholic had some idea that Mary didn’t need a Savior (and the contrary has been echoed to you in may posts, especially FightingFat and Irish_Catholic) then would the laity, religious, priests all pray this Scripture which acknowledges that Mary needs a Savior from Mary’s own mouth?
More Catholic church teaching – you believe it – and as you already know by now….I don’t.As for the Assumption, Mary didn’t go to Heaven by her own power but by the Holy Spirit.
As for the Queen of Heaven, it is because her Son is the King of Heaven—He willed it and the Church affirms this doctrine.
Posted by Dancelittleework:The CCC says this:
More Catholic church teaching – stated as fact with regards to the Mary part– not the same Mary of the gospels , but the “Mary” that the Catholic church has developed over the centuries affording her “salutary influence on men”….and as always, some truth mixed in – from 511.970 "Mary’s function as mother of men in no way obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ, but rather shows its power. But the Blessed Virgin’s salutary influence on men . . . flows forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ, rests on his mediation, depends entirely on it, and draws all its power from it."511 "No creature could ever be counted along with the Incarnate Word and Redeemer; but just as the priesthood of Christ is shared in various ways both by his ministers and the faithful, and as the one goodness of God is radiated in different ways among his creatures, so also the unique mediation of the Redeemer does not exclude but rather gives rise to a manifold cooperation which is but a sharing in this one source."512
Divinity? …. why are you asking me this….where have I stated that her supposed sinlessness (is there such a word) equates to divinity? You’re right sin is apart of our humanity but that is not how God intended. God created Adam and Eve to be sinless in creation. Sin not only damages our nature but also humanity as whole not to mention God Himself. If you can acknowledge that Adam and Eve are sinless and human, why not Mary? How does her sinless equate to divinity?
Again…where have I stated that Mary didn’t have free will?Furthermore, since both Adam and Eve are sinless and human–made in God’s own image–have freely chosen to disobey Him and sin. Why do you think that because Mary is the New means she doesn’t have a free will?
I certainly don’t know what every Catholic believes…and would never attempt to tell you what you believe, however - what the Catholic church teaches is there for all to see in its catechsim. What *individual *Catholic’s believe may coincide with their teachings……or not….depending upon their own level of understanding as to what their church teaches.FightingFat was asking: If you can believe that Jesus is sinless and very much a human, why not Mary whom was sinless and very much a human? It’s a logical conclusion.
We Catholics don’t ever think Mary is divine. Like I said before, Adam and Eve were both very much human and sinless pre-Fall. Sinless-ness isn’t a requirement for deity if God Himself would originally create humans as sinless until our first parent’s sin gave us a tendency towards evil. Furthermore, Adam and Eve were both sinless, still human, and had a free will.
Does Jesus equal to Mary or the reverse? The commonality is that they are both human in nature (God had a fully human nature and will in the Incarnation)–this is FightingFat’s comparison. On your part, you equated that his question was comparing divinity but Catholics have never taught Mary is or ever will be divine. This “Catholic Mary” that you speak of isn’t what Catholics believe–that she is divine–but of your own preconceived notions about Catholic really believe regardless if all these Catholic will say “not true or not in our teachings, sorry” until the cows come home.
Instead of telling us Catholics what’s in our teachings, why not listen?

IrishCatholic - sorry - I missed your post when I got a chance to come back in…thanks for clearing that up for me.
It kinds of ties into what FightingFat posted with regards to time not restricting God’s actions…and my response as to why the Catholic church attempts to do so here, by attributing a specific time (at her own conception) when she was supposedly redeemed/blessed/graced/…and to there being no need for that to have happened.
Yes….God’s grace is unmerited and Mary was certainly blessed with God’s grace……I have never suggested she wasn’t and have never suggested that Jesus didn’t also die for His mother? Your above statement has nothing to do with the post of mine you used above.Isn’t that what grace is? Unmerited, unnecessary, a gift given to us by God Himself. God made His own mother and graced in her immaculate conception–how mind blogging is that? I mean, if you think about us God could’ve left us sinners but He chose to send His only begotten Son to die. He saved us not out of necessity but of love. Can you not imagine Him doing the same for His own mother?
Please show where I posted this? You mentioned in your post to FightingFat, that God could’ve done so immaculately conceived Himself but what did He say in Isaiah? That He would be borne of a Virgin.
Nope, not a chance. She has been given this info for the last year and a half or so, and if anything, it has gotten worse. I think prayer is the only thing that will work now, short of a personal visitation from the Theotokos.I know you’re just trying to defend what you think is the truth, but you are really missing out by rejecting the Church’s Marian teachings. This must sound odd to you, but I think if you really had a good explanation as to why Catholics believe what we do about the Blessed Virgin Mary, you might change your mind.
Whatever other criticism one may have of you, Leeann, you are certainly determined and undaunted!I’m slowly slogging through here at responding…trying to go back and catch up on the posts “in order” as they were posted…thanks for the book reference Irish Catholic…and hi guanophore…will carry on.
Took a quick look in that thread…and want to go back in and read through more, thanks for this link, it will be beneficial.Gn 2 14-18
" The name of the third river is the Tigris; it is the one that flows east of Asshur. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
The LORD God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it.
The LORD God gave man this order: “You are free to eat from any of the trees of the garden
except the tree of knowledge of good and bad. From that tree you shall not eat; the moment you eat from it you are surely doomed to die.”
The LORD God said: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.” "
You mean Mary was just like Adam and Eve who had no choice?
Also, I’m not sure why any of the Marian doctrines take away her humanity. She certainly isn’t human just like the rest of us. This I can agree with you on. But she’s human.
We have a thread going on in the apologetic forum on Mary and Jesus as the New Adam and New Eve if that is a subject that interests you.

In what way could I possibly be missing out, when I have Jesus as my Lord and Savior…and because of this - communion with the Father and being indwelt by the Holy Spirit….the complete set….all together, showering me with blessings daily, strengthening me when I am weak in mind and spirit enabling me to continue on, guiding me, nurturing me, chastising me when necessary….what would it be that I am missing out on?I know you’re just trying to defend what you think is the truth, but you are really missing out by rejecting the Church’s Marian teachings. This must sound odd to you, but I think if you really had a good explanation as to why Catholics believe what we do about the Blessed Virgin Mary, you might change your mind.
Because Jesus want you to enter into his Covenant. In Heberew culture, a Covenant is the means by which one enters a family. In this case, we enter into the Family of God.In what way could I possibly be missing out, when I have Jesus as my Lord and Savior…
Objective reality…this is interesting, could you please explain the Church’s infallible pronouncement of the Assumption of Mary doctrine by way of exhibiting this “objective reality.”…I truly don’t quite understand it all.The Church has a vocation to explain the Gospel. It does this with authority, it is this authority which stops it dividing upon itself in the way that Protestant denomination divide in among themselves. Infallible pronouncements are objective reality, and Leeann, many things you would agree with! Like the fact that Jesus is Lord, these are what the Church teaches infallibly. It is how the Church states objective reality.
In this forum itself there is a “Quick Questions” – keyword “doctrine”Can you show me where the Church binds its adherents to having to believe something in order to obtain their salvation?

Response by FightingFat:
Why doesn’t it???Why? Why does it follow more truly?
God stated what He was going to do immediately upon discovery of Adam and Eve’s disobedience…which of course was well before Mary’s time……but how does that have anything to do with the necessity of Mary needing to have received “this grace of divine love at the moment of her conception” in order for her to be able “to love the Son of God with such pure love the moment she became a mother” ?Do you believe that God choose the person for this special task before time? Does that make sense to you?
Typology…yes…and have discussed it at various times – but again, this is all to do with the development of the Catholic church’s Mary…their teachings…sorry…two different Mary’s.Have you ever considered the arc of the covenant and how that relates to Mary? Have you ever thought about Eve and her role in Scripture and juxtaposed that with Mary’s role?
Not at all.A final word. We should show humility before God and to think that you can work something out better than the Church demonstrates a degree of arrogance before God, don’t you think?
I don’t think you are rude at all…just a very devout Catholic with a tendency to believe that you can speak for all Catholics and what they understand and believe about their own religion. Any information that I have gathered over the years, has come from other very devout Catholic believers. Something you should think about. Please forgive me if this appears rude, I merely think that you would benefit from acquainting yourself with what the Catholic Church teaches about Mary before you join a thread like this and start explaining to us what we believe–especially when it appears you do not know, you merely have been told by someone else what we believe…Think about that will you?
Please read thoroughly before responding… take time to contemplate too. It’s not as you may seem to believe. There’s an old saying “I know that you beleive you think you understand what you think I said but I’m not sure that you understood what you think I said that you heard”…something like that. It’s called mass confusion.
It is really dangerous to talk about things you do not understand in light that they could make the difference of being saved, causing scandal, misleading souls, etc… You [we] bring condemnation on your [our] own headwhen you [we] misrepresent ancient Church teachings passed down apostolically. You [we] need to fully understand it before speaking out against it. Now the condemnation you [we] bring upon your[our]self does not mean you [we] will burn in hell but rather that if you [we] intentionally misrepresent the Church’s teachings on these subjects then you [we] run the risk of losing salvation for lying about something very sacred and important to understanding the fullness of truth in Jesus Christ. Another topic for another thread. I hope this point is understood better than the way I wrote it.
Okay, I’ll bear with you….as guanophore has pointed out….I’m determined and undaunted if nothing else.I explain things about Church teachings by telling about my own story because of my first hand knowledge of struggling with this very subject that was a deal breaker for me in the beginning. But once I understood what was being said I became more calm by learning more about what was actually being taught. So here it goes…don’t take words that come across from me as harsh. My words are meant to convey a message…a purely Catholic message with terminology not accustomed to non-Catholic Christians combined with my own unique attempt at explaining things. So please bear with me.
With all due respect, Eucharisteo, you’ve taken a portion of a response I made with regards to a specific post where Raffo explained and posted the Catechism for another poster and myself….and I was advising FightingFat of this. …as well as in another post:With all due respect, Leeann, this strikes me as arrogant. You believe you understand Catholic theology, yet you misrepresent it throughout your post? Sorry but I must challenge you on your “understanding”. I also challenge Catholics on their understanding about Mary, the Mother of God.
1.Just by you stating there’s only one Mary…the Catholic church’s “Mary” doesn’t make it so.Eucharisteo: Like it or not but there is only one Mary, no other like her. She is the New Eve. I too was a fundamental evangelical with a completely distorted view about Mary and what I thought the Catholic Church taught about Mary, so much that I stopped being Catholic and joined a bible only community of believers called the Church of Christ.
Now does that not strike you as being just a bit arrogant, telling someone else what they “mean”.Leeann:
I was actually going in the other direction entirely…stating that the Catholic [C]hurch has attempted to make Mary MORE than human.
Now that this has been clarified for you - and me - can you see that your question below simply doesn’t make sense with the “less than human” angle to it?
Read it again.
Eucharisteo: It is impossible to make any man greater than “Human”. What you mean is that the Church says she is perfectly Human.
…and now you are telling me (us) what gives me (us) the heeby jeebies……amazing. She is a creature created by God to bear a son, a perfect son that is also God made man. He humbled himself to become human….not like our broken human nature because of the affects of original sin or woundedness. Jesus and Mary were not affected by concupiscence the way we are. The explanation about her nature is what gives us the heeby jeebies, not that she was perfectly human.
