We, as Muslims know of these events (Muhammad was given similar signs–splitting the moon, an abundance of milk from a goat which had been unable until then to yield any milk, food multiplied and water for purification.) from the Sunnah. In order for a hadith to be considered sahih/correct, sound, it has to be verified, the chain of narrators can be traced. The study of hadith is a science and the Imams who accepted them, such as Bukhari for example, he wouldn’t take just any hadith from anyone. So we know if something is sahih, a strong hadith than it is something that came from the Prophet saws himself and did indeed occur. (again, I said this is as a MUSLIM). Any hadith that comes from Bukhari or Muslim is very sound.Thanks.
Can you elaborate on the above miracles by Mohammad? What were their purposes, significance and relevance to prove his prophethood? It would be good to quote from the Quran on where to find them.
Now, that being said, as for the splitting of the moon, here is a picture of the moon from NASA:
Here are the ahadith that tells of what happened:
*“The demand of the pagans to the Prophet to show them a miracle. The Prophet showed them the splitting of the moon. Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Massud: During the lifetime of the Prophet the moon was split into two parts and on that the Prophet said, ‘Bear witness (to this).’” Bukhari vol.4 book 56 (The Virtues and Merits of the Prophet and his Companions) ch.26 no.830 p.533.
“Narrated Anas that the Meccan people requested Allah’s Apostle to show them a miracle, and so he showed them the splitting of the moon.” Bukhari vol.4 book 56 (The Virtues and Merits of the Prophet and his Companions) ch.26 no.831 p.533.
“Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The moon was split into two parts during the lifetime of the Prophet.” Bukhari vol.4 book 56 (The Virtues and Merits of the Prophet and his Companions) ch.26 no.832 p.534.*
And here is the proof from the Quran:
***Surah 54 Al Qamar (The Moon)
1 The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has been cleft asunder (the people of Makkah requested Prophet Muhammad SAW to show them a miracle, so he showed them the splitting of the moon).
2 And if they see a sign, they turn away, and say: “This is continuous magic.”
3 They belied (the Verses of Allah, this Quran), and followed their own lusts. And every matter will be settled (according to the kind of deeds (for the doer of good deeds, his deeds will take him to Paradise, and similarly evil deeds will take their doers to Hell)).
4 And indeed there has come to them news (in this Quran) wherein there is (enough warning) to check (them from evil),
5 Perfect wisdom (this Quran), but (the preaching of) warners benefit them not, [M. khan]
1 The Hour (of Judgment) is nigh, and the moon is cleft asunder.
2 But if they see a Sign, they turn away, and say, “This is (but) transient magic.”
3 They reject (the warning) and follow their (own) lusts but every matter has its appointed time.
4 There have already come to them Recitals wherein there is (enough) to check (them),
5 Mature wisdom;- but (the preaching of) Warners profits them not. [Yusuf Ali]***
