Spokenword,
As was said, if the Saint died a martyrs death on a cross then there is no problem depicting them on a cross; that is being true to history. A cross is neither something specifically reserved for Christ nor is it something he desired it to be.
Though no Saint, are we replacing Christ by watching Spartacus being crucified? No. Does anyone mistake the two thieves crucified along with Christ for being Christ? No. Same goes for St. Peter.
I must say I’ve been with people who have Marian Devotions far stronger than I…and I’ve NEVER met anyone who desires to replace Christ with Mary or sees Mary as the fourth part of the Trinity. This is all balony…these crucified Saints were just ‘taking up their crosses’ in a very literal way.

Spokenword:
I,ve seen different images of Mary on the cross and it makes my spirit uncomfortable for I know its not the truth.
That’s very interesting. I’ve been Catholic my entire life and have never seen a depiction of Mary crucified.

Have you seen that IBM commercial with the two guys interpreting the art before them? The one guy explains his interpretation of the artwork as the enterprise scheme of supply and demand and all the intricacies therein.

After a while the older guy behind them (in a foreign accent) says, “I think it’s a horse.”

Arguing about the intentions of a particular artist is a waste of time, and totally irrelevant to the teachings of the Church.

Everyone here feels strongly that to represent a crucified Virgin Mary would be horrific and a gross distortion of historical and biblical truth.

So…we all agree.

Peace in Christ…Salmon

Spokenword:
Then why have there been images of Mary on the cross without her being crucified?
Depicting Mary (any one of 3 different Marys, actually) adjacent to (or in front of a cross) would be biblically accurate:

John 19: 25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

If she was on the left, just move to the right and now she is in front of the cross.

Perspective is everything.

Here’s a clue, if there are nail holes in the hands, it is not the Virgin Mary.

Peace in Christ…Salmon

It is rare to find a vehement critic of the Catholic Church who is willing to listen to the true teaching of the Church. They seem to prefer listening to the views/opinions/superstitions of poorly formed Catholics and declare those as representative of the Church’s teaching.

Are there Catholics who cross the line with respect to devotion to Mary? Yes. Are there Catholics who forget that it’s all about Jesus? Yes. Are there Catholics who go wild on Saturday night and receive the Eucharist on Sunday morning? Yes. Heck, I know a woman who’s married to a priest who left the priesthood to marry her because he got her pregnant. He was never formerly released from the priesthood. Now they have 3 kids, regularly consult a medium/psychic, and think their 10-year-old daughter can channel ghosts (and encourage it). Yet, they attend Mass weekly and call themselves Catholic.

This is sad, but it’s not limited to Catholics. Yet, critics latch on to these people and rail against the Church.

Thank God for this site and all the well formed Catholics who participate. God bless you all.

Well you need to tell us just where you saw such a screwed up image, because it sure as the world isn’t right. I for one agree with the poster above who says that he has been in The Church all his life ane never seen such a thing. How do we even know that this picture is authentic since they can be so easily manipulated by a computer savvy soul? This may not even be a real Catholic event that they photographed…Regardless, IT IS NOT AT ALL what Catholics believe and should NOT be a source of attacks against our most holy faith.

P.S. SPOKENWORD you should know better!
P.S.S. Fzo84…Just what religion are you…?

Spoken - is this an off-center reference to the Eucharist? I hope not. I would be very disappointed if it is.

I was just about to post this same response.🙂

i’d like to point out the obvious - this is not a picture of mary crucified. it’s a simple juxtaposition of two christian images. good grief - you make me wanna quote bart simpson!

Yes, I agree, Our Lady isn’t depicted as crucified. Still, I find it a bit troubling, this mixing of images. Perhaps its some atavistic Protestant tendency cropping up after 17 years as a Catholic, but I don’t like it.

Well Mary stood at the foot of the cross at Calvary.

I believe the image Spokenword is refering to is Our Lady of All Nations?

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

This is the prayer associated with the devotion:

Lord Jesus Christ,
Son of the Father,
send now Your Spirit over the earth,
Let the Holy Spirit live
in the hearts of all nations,
that they may be preserved
from degeneration, disaster and war.
May the Lady of All nations,
who once was Mary,
be our Advocate.
Amen

This is the background info given from EWTN:

From 1945 to 1959 a woman in Amsterdam, Ida Peerderman, received messages in which Mary states that she wants to be addressed " in these our times" as “The Lady Of All Nations.”
On May 31, 1996, public veneration of the Mother of God under this title was officially authorized by the two bishops of Haarlem (NL). Our Lady also requested the official recognition of her vocation as “Coredemptix, Mediatrix and Advocate,” promising that " The Lady of All Nations will then grant peace, true peace, to the world."
Mary appeared standing before her Son’s Cross, to which she is so inseparably and painfully united and she gave the above prayer to the visionary. From Mary’s open hands the three rays of “grace, redemption and peace” stream down upon all nations. These gifts emerge from the Cross of Christ, and she promises to grant them to everyone who says this prayer daily before a crucifix or this image.
the meaning of “who once was Mary.” is explained by the Lady of All nations herself: “…many people have known Mary as Mary. Now however, in this new era, which is about to begin, I wish to be the Lady of All Nations. Everyone understands this.” July 2, 1951

Wolseley:
It’s not Mary, it’s St. Wilgefortis.

from nmsu.edu/~artgal/retabloweb/col-saints.html:

Saint Wilgefortis, Virgin and Martyr
Feast day: July 20

Patroness of laundresses and invoked during moments of distress and headaches.

Saint Wilgefortis is the Latin word for “Strong Virgin.” Her name is also associated with deliverance and liberation. She is said to have been the daughter of a pagan king from a Portuguese territory. Her father ordered her to marry but she had made a vow of virginity and prayed to God to liberate her from this destiny. Her prayers were answered and a thick beard grew upon her face, making her undesirable. Her angry father accused her of witchcraft and had her crucified. Attributes include her as a young beautiful woman, with or without beard, wearing a long dress and a cape with her arms stretched on a cross, crucified with nails or tied to the cross or even without the cross with her arms stretched in a cross-shape. She usually wears a long tunic and has a crown of roses on her head. In most representations she is beardless.

Given the importance of the beard to her story, it would help for the beard to be present.

The arms are not any pose associated with Mary, AFAIK. That apart, it does look far too like Mary for comfort - personally, I would destroy it. ##

OH MY GOSH !!! LOOK !!!

These Baptists have gone so far as to put themselves on the cross!

Hi Salmon, And this is the way to honor Mary,by taking the place of Jesus Christ? I dont think so my friend!! Honor,YES, replace ,NO, God Bless
You obviously don’t read. The picture is not of Mary but a female Saint who was crucified because she loved Christ more than here own life.

You refuse to read the truth so that you can remain in the darkness and think you are doing God’s work.

God Bless,
RS

First you have to prove that it is Mary. Second, the image is not of someone as a redeemer but of someone who has been united with Christ having shared in the same form of death. The woman’s arms are not outstretched. Her hands are together, indicating that she died with and through Christ.

I think that there is some exaggeration in the outrage that is being projected.
