JL: It’s not scrpture that gives eternal life. Scripture is a witness for Christ, whom is and gives eternal life. The NLT is more clear, biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John5:37-40&version=NLTThe word scripture means written word. It’s were we get the word script which means writing and if you read the rest of Jn.5 you will see that Jesus is talking about what Moses WROTE about Him.
Jn.5
39Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
41I receive not honour from men.
42But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
43I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
44How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
46For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.
47But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
JL: What does the written Word say? [2Thes2:14 Whereunto HE CALLED YOU BY OUR GOSPEL, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 Therefore, BRETHREN STAND FAST, and HOLD THE TRADITIONS which ye have been TAUGHT, WHETHER BY whether by word, OR our epistle.]So, in what other way do you think that we recieve the word of God?
Can you post a scripture saying all Tradition is now in the written Tradition of Scripture? If not then we can be sure the Word of God is both oral and written. Notice BOTH oral and scrptural Traditions are TAUGHT. The Teacher would be those whom Christ SENT to teach the WHOLE WORLD till the END, Mt28:16-20. The Church the pillar and ground of TRUTH, 1Tm3:15.
Jn 14: 26: But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
2TIM 2:1 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the THINGS that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
2 TIM 1:13 HOLD FAST THE** form of SOUND WORDS**, which thou hast HEARD OF ME, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 14 That good thing which was COMMITTED unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
