They appear to be holding a vigil light in their right hand, which might be suggestive of portraying the five wise virgins in the gospel. None of us knows, and I question why we are discussing this photo ad nauseum when it has no bearing on the topic, and has no other substantive information connected with it whatsoever. 😦

No, this particular cathedral gets blasted because it plain ugly.

If +Mahony had built a nice Spanish Mission style church (like the Notre Dame architecural school submitted) or perhaps an Italian baroque or American neo-gothic, no one here would be critizing the cathedral.

Instead, he chose to build “Our Lady, Queen of Concrete” topped by an androgenous representation of the the person who is the very model of feminity.
As bad as The Yellow Armadillo is, it still doesn’t rate the title Our Lady, Queen of Concrete.

That title should go to this parish church, located in my very own diocese: sfnortonshores.com/guided_tour/page1.htm

I direct your attention to pages 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 of the virtual tour for a real taste of what it’s like. It’s genuine postwar East German industrial concrete grey.

Now that’s really a concrete queen. Godawful. So is the statue of Mary, with the hole in her womb like she had a cannonball shot through her…that’s just as bad, if not worse, as that statue of the Raelian priestess in Los Angeles.

It’s also icy cold inside this building in winter. I’ve been there.

We have very expensive cathedrals all over the country–heck, all over the world!–but this particular one gets blasted only because people are wanting to take a swipe at this particular Cardinal.
Maybe that and because this house of God looks like a Borg spaceship?
Anyone want to take on the Pope for the “summer palace?” After all, it again could easily feed a lot of the poor for some period of time.
There’s no shortage of Catholic homeless shelters, orphanages, hospitals, nursing homes, and soup kitchens. Have you ever volunteered in one?
