The Church and all the finger waggers get the procreative equation just fine — I agree with those that contend the unitive side of this equation needs some work. Masturbation may not always and everytime be about beastlikeself gratification.
Sometimes it’s a coping mechanism just like drinking can be a coping mechanism. Both are wrong, but we earthlings suffer from deep hurts some times, and sometimes the M-thing appears like the lesser of many evils for those of us whose spouses have thrown the sex switch to off unilaterally either through necessity (illness, death) or just because they no longer feel like it (the latter is particularly hard to take).

Here’s my real world - after 40 years of wonderful in every way marriage including sex and Catholicism - my wife was diagnosed with a condition that prohibits her from having vaginal sex ergo acording to The Faith “sex.” I love her profoundly and would never hurt her. The issue is I miss the intimacy - not just the getting off.

As - as this forum has ground to a fine powder - masturbation ala RC is always and everytime disordered and sinful, and "fooling around must lead to open-to-procreation sex we’ve been left with this: She is afraid to even hug me as that could lead to my arousal and temptation I MISS TOUCHING HER. I am afraid to talk about my sexual frustration because that would make her feel less womanly or inadequate or a source of frustration to me. I MISS TALKING TO HER While we could derive pleasure, intimacy and union from what used to be foreplay - we can not consumate and so derive no pleasure, intimacy or union from anything physical and/or sexual, or even sexual in inference.

The Church and all the finger waggers get the procreative equation just fine — I agree with those that contend the unitive side of this equation needs some work. Masturbation may not always and everytime be about beastlikeself gratification.
To endure trials patiently is a sign of holiness. God is calling you both to greater holiness! Thank him for this.

I think that it might help you both to endure this suffering if you could pray and talk about this with your wife. It may bring you two closer than ever. Unitive without intercourse. Women usually love it when there husbands open up to them about their problems. I don’t think it would make her feel less womanly or inadequate. I had a medical condition for many months where my husband and I could not have intercourse. I wanted to talk about how we were going to handle it. We came up with some things that we could do without sinning. I am fortunate that I can treat my conditon daily with medicine to keep it in check. Are you able let her know that it is okay to hug you and kiss you, or do other things that you could enjoy, without having to have intercourse? Have you prayed together about this?

Dear petriuno,
I am in almost the same situation. I posed a similar question to another forum and got the same answer: canfp.org/artman/publish/article_900.shtml. (Although I haven’t given up the struggle to improve, I’ve accepted a certain level of sin and confession in my life, but I’m trying to avoid leading my wife into sin on her part.)

I will be praying for you and your wife, that she gets over the anguish and fear to the point where you can at least touch and cuddle again. I will be praying for the Church, that its pronouncements on this topic will be proven correct when I look back on this life from the vantage point of the next.

I’ve been in a similar situation over the last 8 years. My situation differs slightly because there is not a absolute medical reason, it is more phycological. At any rate it is mentally difficult for both spouses. The wife can easily start to worry that the man desires her for selfish pleasure. At the same time she can feel guilty and believe she is failure as a wife.

I have come to learn and accept that this may in fact be the very cross that I need to embrace to align my soul with heaven. Accepting this as fully as possible changed things quite a bit. My wife is no longer afraid to show love and affection (particularly before bed) for fear of my intentions. There is a high level of peace and contentment.

I also had similar problem at a point in my marriage. What we did was to angage in alot of forplay starting with a massage and alot of intimacey then extream phsical forplay, brought the wife to orgasm manually (which is permissible prior to or emediately after intercourse, Ref Theology of the body) By this time I really didn’t need much to help me complete the act. So with alot of lubrication and really listening to my wife to tell me if she had any discomfort, I very carfully just penitrated her only slightly, maybe an inch or so while being very passionate with each other. With the level of frustration we had built up that was all it took to complete the act. I’m confident that all of the points for licit relations were met. I don’t know your situation. But that’s what worked for us. It takes alittle practice. There may be an occational acidental release while perfecting your timing, which isn’t illicit as long as it was truely acidental.

I’d like to give a better and more complete reference to female masterbation during intercourse. Pope John Paul ll in his pre-papal reflections on the matter says, “…if the wife, despite their sincere efforts, was unable to climax during penetration, it may well be the loving thing for her husband to stimulate her to climax thereafter (if she so desired). In this case, such stimulation is not inherently masturbatory since it is within the context of a completed act of intercourse.” Furthermore from Christopher West’s book (considered to be an authority in interpreting Theology of The Body) GOOD NEWS ABOUT SEX & MARRIAGE “…It’s not inherently wrong if the wife climaxes as a result of oral stimulation, so long as it’s within the context of a completed act of intercourse.” So that you gives you a few options in that regard. I hope this may help someone. Perhaps if relations become an enjoyible thing for both parteners again it can once more become a fruitful part of the marriage.

My husband and I did this also and some of the semen spilled out but my priest said it that this was not a sin. Hopefully this will work for them too.

Apparently You cant read. I Understand That we are to overcome our weaknesses, but thats not to say we all do, All God asks is that we try, & only he knows if we do. There are people who go a lifetime fighting some weakness & they never beat it, did they fight it, Only God knows for sure. We live here on earth we are not rolling around heaven, this is a world full of worldly temptations, We are natural beings, not super natural, so its only reasonable that we are going to fall over & over again In Thought, Word or deed or doubt Do You really know Gods concern, guess what we only think we do, God is a mystery for U & for me & for us all

And I think feelings like those are the source of many of the uncharitable comments made on this topic; the idea being “If I can’t have any pleasure, neither can you”.

hmmm…its ok to manually stimulate others but not oneself??

You took my post & twisted it, You are really radical. I am not so sure That you have beaten the masturbation habit

Actually It is permissable to stimulate oneself. In the context of a licit conjucal act. In fact I’ve read reference that the wife is allowed to stimulate herself to orgasm if the husband cannot. Again in the context of a complete licit conjucal act. Infact it may even be **necessary **for the husband to stimulate himself prior to intercourse, say in the case of partial ED. If the husband should stimulate himself during foreplay and for some reason the act is interupted and not completed or there is an accidental release, no sin has been commited because the intent was toward a licit conjucal act. However because the husbands climax is tied inseperably to the procreative means, **It is never permissable to ejaculate outside of the “required vessel.” **It’s different with the wife because her climax isn’t tied inseperably to the proceative means. The procreative and unitive means can happen if no climax is achieved on her part at all. So logic would dictate that it wouldn’t matter if it took place before, during, or after. One could argue that her climax infact would in fact add rather than take away from any of these meanings. However, All intensionally derived sexual pleasure must occur in the context of a licit conjucul union. And again, every ejaculation must occur in the required vessel. You can pose an infinate number of more and more complicated sets of circumstances, but I think that if you always keep these two things in mind, the anwers become clear.

And I think feelings like those are the source of many of the uncharitable comments made on this topic; the idea being “If I can’t have any pleasure, neither can you”.
I tend to agree. And it oversimplifies a complex issue especially in cases where one spouse unilaterally withdraws from sex without considering the feelings of the other. The Church rightly teaches that sex is unitive in addition to being procreative, and removing that unitive aspect can do nothing other than put negative pressure on a marriage.

Even in involuntary cases (disease, death), it isn’t so simple. In both cases it can lead to acute loneliness, plus the pressure of caring for a sick loved one, or dealing with the pressures of widowhood… (financial, emotional, settling an estate, etc).

We have people here sanctimoniously telling people in these situations that they shouldn’t masturbate because, well, they don’t so others shouldn’t either.

I am basically orthodox in my beliefs, but I think unless the sanctimonious ones can walk a mile in the other’s shoes, they should butt out and keep their judgments to themselves. You may as well be telling them to go spend the rest of their lives in a monastery (well that would be an option I would chose if I were widowed after my kids became independent, but it isn’t for everybody!)

And this is where you’re going wrong, this isn’t about judgments as has been stated many times. It’s about providing good, accurate information which is offered to help build the spirit of our fellow Christian’s.

The fact of the matter is, there is never any situation under which masturbation would not be considered sinful. If there is some reason why the (married) individual can’t have sex with their spouse, then a more positive approch is to maybe help figure out if there is anything that can be done about that situation. If there is nothing to be done, then more positive than “lock the door, do what you want, God won’t smite you” is to offer spiritual support for their situation, and help them to maintain their trust in God and his (and the Church’s) precept.

This isn’t a judgment, it’s promoting the truth of what God wants from us with regard to our sexuality. Promoting sin (which is what the example statement I used does) is never the right path.

Upon reflection of my above post, I’d like to add, that if someone has some kind of preocupation with self stimulation and you think, “I can’t wait until I have relations so I can stimulate myself licitly.” Although technically you may be doing nothing wrong, it’s not very spiritually healthy. Making love with your spouse should always be approached with the attitude that, I’m going to give pleasure rather** than **take pleasure. Your primary focus should always be turned outward to your spouse. Of course you should be completely open to receive pleasure from your spouse. For her to give selflessly in the same way , you must receive as she does. Receive, not take. In your mind your own pleasure should be always be secondary. Then love making will be a truely spiritual and beautiful experience for you both. Although this might not be required, I promise it will strenghtin your marraige and chances are, if you approach lovemaking with this attitude every time, your wife will be open to the experience alot more often.

Well put, I think to many people consider the objections to masterbation to be simply other people’s jugdements. I think the whole point of this forum is to get the knowledge of church teaching on complicated situations as this. That’s what’s being sought. That’s what’s being offered. At the end of the day our personal feelings on these matters don’t matter. For us to be catholic means we must always ultimitly difer to church teaching
