Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."138 “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."139
To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety, or other psychological or social factors that can lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.
Note that second paragraph—masturbation does not simply and solely involve the exercise of physical organs. Like any sexual act, it involves the whole human person. As such, masturbation is no different than any other sexual activity outside the self-giving one-flesh bond of marriage.

Not all motivations for sexual activity outside the marriage covenant are the same. These motivations are, as such, value-neutral. We all have sexual inclinations of one kind or another. But the Church clearly teaches that we also have a will designed by God—a will to make loving or hateful choices.

We all have strong sexual inclinations, many of which cause us profound physical and spiritual pain. These longings are part of us and are wound all around and within our personalities. Like Saint Paul’s immortal lament, we know the good that we should do, but feel as if we cannot refrain from doing a thing that we know is wrong.

In my own battle with a sin that I felt offered no options to me (much like the case in which you find yourself), I was reminded of the moving story of Saint Maria Goretti, a 12-year-old peasant girl who was martyred by a young man trying to rape her (an alienated young man who lived in her household and who himself suffered from an addiction to pornography). She resisted him not to save her own purity—but to keep him from going to hell (her own words, as he himself testified). She received 14 mortal stab wounds from him and spent three days in agony on her deathbed, without medicine or water. And she forgave him. On her deathbed, she said that she wanted to be with him in Paradise.

For the first eight years of his imprisonment, her killer was unrepentant. But then he had a dream in which she came to him and handed him, one-by-one, 14 lilies (the symbol of resurrection and purity). After that, he was a model prisoner and a changed man. Upon serving the 28 years of his sentence and being released, he trekked to the door of Saint Maria’s mother and begged her forgiveness. His testimony about Saint Maria’s conduct during her martyrdom was key to her canonization.

I did not know all these details when I begged Saint Maria Goretti for her intercession. All I could remember was that she successfully resisted her attacker and died a martyr. I had tried everything. All I said to her was, simply, “Santa Maria, you know I am exhausted. You know that I dread that this will be my life forever. But you know the power of forgiveness; through your prayers, I am ready to really believe that Jesus forgives me now and always. What happens, will happen. I may sin again in the next minute. But I know I am forgiven. May Christ do with me what He will.”

That was 5-1/2 years ago. I am amazed to tell you that I have been spared that tendency to sin ever since then. Do I still have the inclinations? Oh, yes. But I am in the charge of one of the handmaids of the Virgin Mary. In the presence of Mary and Santa Maria Goretti, I receive Christ’s Body and Blood—both in Mass and spiritually, every minute of the day. I am sustained. I am, minute-by-minute, being transformed.

Unlike the days I spent enthralled by my inclinations, I am now given gifts of the Holy Spirit: vigilance, a regular prayer life, guarding the gateways of my heart and my senses, and faithful participation in the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion. I am being empowered to love Jesus Christ ever more deeply, in ways that I have had no previous conception of. Could I sin tomorrow—or even today? Yes. But that no longer hangs over me like a sword. If I do such a thing, will I have lost something precious? Yes. But Christ pours out even more grace to recover lost things and lost souls.

Yes, we all have powerful sexual longings. Yes, those longings are heartfelt, passionate, and profound. Yes, sometimes we are overcome by the pain—even physical pain—that they cause.

And, yes, we are made to ground those longings in a permanent Union that will fulfill all our longings, all our desires—Union with God.

Be patient with yourself, as God is patient with you. Patience is the physical and spiritual living out of mercy. God calls you to be merciful to yourself and what you are battling in your very body. He does not leave you prone to this struggle to no end. Your suffering in your very body has a redemptive effect for your beloved and so many other souls whom you do not know. Lift up these pains for them.

Having been there, via a particularly pernicious form of masturbation, I judge no one who masturbates. We are working out a mystery in our lives, and God is the only One Who can see us in the properly loving perspective. I surely pray that God has such mercy on you and me! And so teaches the Church, because Christ loves all of us. And, well, WE are the Church.

Sins of impurity, and in particular the sin of masturbation, are sins that many people struggle with. Many more people do not struggle at all, they simply give into these vices telling themselves they are not vices at all. So from the beginning you should feel a little better knowing that you truly desire to be pure and that you are making an effort. Now the trick is to turn that effort into success. You should know that this is likely going to be something you struggle with for quite a while and that there is no quick fix.

Also, please do NOT give into despair as it sounds like you are close to doing. Alone you may not be strong enough to fight off temptation but with God’s help you can do anything. But despair is an insidious temptation that comes from the devil. The devil does not want you to seek the Lord’s healing forgiveness after he has managed to tempt you into sinning. As a result the devil will try to make you think that you are beyond God’s mercy because of the frequency or the gravity of the sin(s) you’ve committed or that you are nort worthy of going to Confession and receiving God’s mercy. These are lies, resist such thoughts! True, none of us are “worthy” of God’s forgiveness, but God loves all of us more than we could ever imagine and He was willing to die for that love. He forgave even those who were crucifying Him, so He will surely forgive you if you repent.

Remember that when it comes to any sin prayer is your strongest weapon. I know you said you are too busy to pray the rosary, but try. I too am a full-time college student but I still manage most days to pray the rosary, even if it means I’m nodding off while doing so. If you can’t pray the full rosary each day, then pray a decade of the rosary each day at least. If even that isn’t possible then pray three Hail Marys a day for purity of body, mind, and heart. And when tempted call on the Blessed Mother and our Lord Jesus Christ for help.

Avoid situations in which you find yourself to be tempted as well. Sometimes this is not possible, but if it is possible remove yourself from the people or places that are tempting you at any given moment. Take a walk, pray for a few minutes, do something to get yourself away from the temptation.

Know that I will remember you in my prayers today.

I just remembered a prayer for purity that someone on these forums had posted before and looked it up. Here it is, I hope it helps:

Catholic prayer to fight impurity

Jesus, Lover of chastity,
Mary, Mother most pure,
and Joseph, chaste guardian of the Virgin,
to you I come at this hour,
begging you to plead with God for me.
I earnestly wish to be pure in thought,
word and deed in imitation of your own holy purity.

Obtain for me, then,
a deep sense of modesty
which will be reflected in my external conduct.
Protect my eyes, the windows of my soul,
from anything that might dim the luster of a heart
that must mirror only Christ-like purity.

And when the “Bread of Angels becomes the Bread of me”
in my heart at Holy Communion,
seal it forever against the suggestions of sinful pleasures.

Heart of Jesus, Fount of all purity,
have mercy on us.

Amen.

Amen.

God is love. Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury.
Even if you fall, God does not brood over it, and he desires for you to run back to him and trust him. Know that you will overcome this with God’s grace.
I have struggled with the same thing, and it’s horrible. This sin makes me feel totally lonely, isolated, and shameful. I hate it so much, because I have felt that my life is just one huge contradiction if I call myself a good Catholic who loves Jesus, and yet my actions are so ugly and hurtful to Jesus.
I have never told anyone about this because I am so ashamed. But God is showing me that I’m not alone - many women deal with these types of issues, and God can set us free.
I recommend a great website to you: www.beggarsdaughter.com.
Also, the Catholic Answers Live radio program just did an hour called “Breaking Free of Pornography.” They talked about some great ways to deal with lust and how to overcome it. I would really suggest listening to this, even if your situation isn’t specific to pornography. You can listen to that here: catholic.com/radio/event.php?calendar=1&category=&event=6582&date=2011-01-24

Holy Mother Mary, please bless littleflower! Keep her safe in the loving arms of your son.

I am praying for you! And I would really appreciate your prayers as well! :)❤️

*Hi there LittleFlower!

Don’t be too hard on yourself.

Remember that Our Sweet, Heavenly Father God loves you, and knows all of your weaknesses.

You already have mentioned the answer…‘Prayer!’

Pray daily. Set time aside each and every day for Your Sweet, Loving Father God. Talk to HIM. Tell HIM all that is on your mind. Ask HIM to strengthen your faith, to avoid all temptation, and to try to do better next time, whenever you fall.

During this time of prayer, make a good examination of conscience, followed by an ‘Act of Contrition.’

I also had this same issue you are currently struggling with. What really helped me was to avoid any and all things - whether it is something I see, hear, read, etc. that contributed to masturbation. Pictures, songs, movies, etc. All of these things are inviting ‘The Evil One’ to ‘enter’ through your ‘will.’ When you be rid of all these ‘temptations,’ you will find that the ‘desire’ to ‘masturbate’ will ‘completely cease.’

I will be praying for both YOU and Your Boyfriend, that Our Sweetest, Heavenly Father God, will guide the two of you to a pathway of Holiness!

May Our Sweetest Father God Bless Both of YOU!

BIG BEAR HUGS

Peace Be With YOU, My Dear Sister In Jesus Christ!

Bye for now!*

I want to be worthy of His Love, though I know I never can be. I want to go to heaven, and see many people there. Thank you for your prayers, Littleflower
God loves you, period; His love is not conditional, it’s not dependent on doing something to earn it.
So realize this first: God loves you and there’s NOTHING you can do about it. 😃
Proof? One: God made you (simple, right?). Two: Jesus died for YOUR personal sins, and my personal sins, NOT in a generic and impersonal way. Three: the new testament if you want more.

That being said, He loves us too much to leave us as we are, which is why you’re here asking for help because you want to beat this.
I know I hurt God so much, and I hope that although he forgave my sins, I can repent of them.
If you repent, it means you’re sorry for what you’ve done to offend God and want to not do it again (even if you fall later on). So if you repent and go to confession then you’re forgiven! 🙂 That’s why the priest says “I absolve you in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”, so that you can KNOW you’re forgiven, because that’s Jesus speaking through the priest. Remember Jesus and the paralytic? He walked to show Jesus had power to forgive sins, so trust Him. 😉
Temptations haven’t hit too hard yet, but maybe this is the calm before the storm. Sadness has been hitting hard more than anything though.
Don’t fall into the trap of being afraid of falling. TRUST your Lord, rely on HIM and not yourself and you will eventually realize how He carries you forward in a way you couldn’t before relying on His strength.

Feelings come and go, don’t let them dominate you. How? Give your suffering to God every time it hits you hard, ask for His help. Remember His passion and what he bared for you, remember that love and just love Him back. It won’t make the pain go away, but your pain will have meaning and direction: Jesus.
My boyfriend had fallen to temptation the other day, and this just hit me really hard. I’m looking to join a support group here for that, but ether way it just hurts.
It’s hard to forgive others, so ask God for the strength to do so. Think of how you want God’s forgiveness and apply that to your boyfriend. Then you may begin to forgive him as strongly as you want God to forgive you.

I think it’s hardest to forgive another’s sin when it’s a sin WE commit as well, because we find it so hard to forgive OURSELVES. So remember God’s forgiveness and let Him heal you in time.

As someone who fought this alone and lost, and then beat it with our Lady’s help, I STRONGLY recommend the** daily rosary** to you. 👍

It’s hard to find time so MAKE time, eventually it’ll be much easier. The enemy loves to use our excuses to keep us from good things. I started with daily exercise with the rosary, woke up 20 minutes earlier each day to pray it.
I used an audio rosary to help me from [ (you and your computer if that contributes to falling), leave doors open when you can, stop going to any sites that make it easy to be tempted, and if you carry a rosary with you all day, remember it and hold it when you’re feeling tempted (you can learn to make your own over there at Rosary Army). 🙂

You’re both in my prayers.

God loves you, and I love you too dear sister. Love’s not a feeling, it’s a choice, so it’s not me just trying to sound nice. 😛

i used to be an addict since my cousin showed me 6 years ago. i was 9 (now 15) and didn’t know what i was getting into. 6 years later, i decided to stop after i realized the lustfulness that drove me to do it. and now im 5 weeks “sober” (as i like to call it) and my perseverance to resist the temptration of doing it is winning and i will forever let it win. in the immortal words of wonder woman “To the last breath, FIGHT ON!”

I think there is some really great advice in many of these posts and I think you are on the right track. You truly have a desire to stop this addiction and for the right reasons, because it is sinful and offensive to God. The relationship you describe with your boy friend is ideal. Far too few married couples understand that they are supposed to help lead one another closer to Jesus by their complete devotion and fidelity to one another. The fact that you already understand this is absolutely awesome.

I would just make two comments that are not meant to be critical of you but to give you something to think about. As I said, you clearly have an amazing foundation of faith and I know you will only build on that. First, you said that you try to pray the Rosary every day but get too busy or are too tired. This means that you are not putting God first in you life. If you love him, you place him first, everything else comes second. Saying we are too busy, though I empathize with this feeling, is really just a rationalization for not devoting the proper time to prayer and devotion to God. This leads me to my second point. God allows us to be tested not so He can see if we really love him, he already knows our heart. He allows us to be tempted so WE can see if we really love him. The deeper our love for him, the better we are able to resist temptation.

You have a great foundation of faith which is a gift from God. He gives this grace to those who seek him earnestly. So don’t give up and don’t lose hope. You will fall and you will come back stronger each time until one day you will over come this addiction. But rest assured, you can not do it without God and you can’t expect him to help you if you are not willing to place him first in your life. You can pray the Rosary in your car or just before you go to sleep. Shut the TV off for 25-30 minutes or put EWTN on and pray with Mother Angelica each evening as she prays the Rosary.

If you place God first, you will overcome this problem. If you can, spend some time in adoration praying before the blessed sacrament. Draw close to God and He will draw close to you. Daily prayer is not just a good suggestion, it is essential.

May The Lord bless you and keep you, may The Lord let his face shine upon you and be gracious too you, may The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace.
