When I was in RCIA, we were told that if you sinned in this fashion, you did not have to go to confession. Is this wrong? I wonder why there are different views.
Such would be very very incorrect. Someone was either misinformed -or something got lost in translation (such as discussing certain cases where guilt may be lessened…)

This is most certainly a grave matter for mortal sin.

The variety of opinions held by Catholics is far greater than you imagine, I think. I’m not aware of the Church’s “official” position on the matter, but there are certainly some Catholics who argue that, without lust, masturbation isn’t wrong.

Since this is a forum wherein opinions like the above are meant to be shared, our friend should be made aware of this opinion held by several Catholics, should he not?
Not really. Opinions don’t change church teachings. It’s more important that he/she understand clearly the church teachings and not the opinions of Catholics which vary on this as well as may other teachings.

It is grave matter for mortal sin – if a mortal sin is committed -one looses the state of grace – and thus needs to repent and get to confession…
Lol I should have ended my question better

What if the culpable dies before getting to confession?

I know… isn’t that what I just said?

And what if the culpable ones don’t make it to confession?
What if any culpable person for any mortal sin doesn’t make it to confession?

The church teaches you must have your heart aligned to Christ to go to heaven. If you are unrepentant your not aligned. If you say an act of contrition and intend to confess as soon as possible , than your heart is realigned even if you got hit by a bus on your way.

It is not something we can judge…for we do not know if the person had the grace of perfect contrition prior

and while we should not “presume” …God can work in ways we do not see …even in the very last moments…

Thanks for the answers. This is what I also believe to be true, just making sure I’m on the right page : )

I always get a little worried about dying in mortal sin.

The fact that you worry about dying in mortal sin, should provide you with your answer.

Hell is for people who don’t worry about it and don’t care if they offend God.

Your opinion, is that of Evangelical James Dobson, and has been highly criticized by Catholics. Even without lust it spills the seed without its procreative function which is sinful. Just like Catholics cannot do that when having intercourse.

In Catholic teaching, sex is primarily a giving to another person rather than a pleasuring of self that masturbation is.

CCC teaches clearly.

2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."138 “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."139

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.
It is really sad that so much concern is highlighted on the mortality of this sin when most people struggling with it are indeed also struggling with “affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.”

Bottom line: Try not to do it and if ones fails have the humility to confess it. Simple as that. Do not obsess over it.

Well said, I would also say talk to the priest in detail in the confessional. Share your struggle tell of how hard it is.

Perhaps he will determine your culpability low and can set up some sort of accountability and spiritual direction to help you overcome it.

This is one of those really hard ones. Just lean toward confession rather than ambivalence.

Is Masturbation sin ? Because some says that its not, some says it is.
Why would a normal biological process be a sin? In our human part we are mammal and that part is subject to hormones and very often is a means of getting rid of stress. Making people feel guilty about it is just adding to their stress.

Well, are bodies are also designed to procreate. We should be having sex like animals…mating, but we tend to call that rape. There are lots of primal processes that we find immoral.

Murder should be allowed if it helps you survive, kill off the rival makes right?

How did you equate masturbation (done in private) with having sex like animals? We are in our physical selves, sexual creatures, otherwise we would have no impetus to procreate. Psychologists will tell you that masturbation is a normal reaction to hormones, and stress. I agree that if it’s ruining someone’s life then it’s a problem, but I can guarantee that some kind of stress is the culprit. I wish the Catholic Church would revisit this subject.

All I am saying is we are more than animals. And so we should not just say “it’s natural”

Secular psychologists also affirm abortion is ok, premarital sex, homosexuality, and a host of other problem areas.

I don’t go to the church of secularism and psychology thankfully!

Masturbation is a mortal sin so basically 99.1 percent of people are going to hell?

Maybe I need new friends but I don’t know really know anyone who doesn’t.

Don’t get me wrong I accept the church’s teachings, but it’s hard to think about the fact that the majority of people will in fact die in mortal sin unless they don’t know it is or meet the 3 requirements for being mortal sin which it’s fair to say outside of Catholicism most don’t, heck even inside the church but even among those that do many don’t care or flat out reject it. I’m not gonna lie these are one of the sins I’m resentful about…it’s almost as if I had just never found out the true teaching I could just not worry about it. Doesn’t seem fair as the case with many other sins and growing in knowledge of the faith. I trust in God but I can’t help but feel annoyed at times. It also does not help to have priests teaching conflicting things on this matter.
Yap, that is how it works. You got more talents, so you have more responsibility.
Luke 12:48:
From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.
Also, this is just personal and subjective experience, but don’t hold yourself on those numbers; 99,1%. I was on that side and I was like masturbation was human nature, impossible to stop, etc, etc. Glad to tell You that I found I was wrong. That’s just too fake happiness, that only lasts few moments. That’s the enemy tricking you. Trust me, since I have been chaste, I feel like I have been tasting pieces of the everlasting happiness. I don’t let my brain trick me any more.

And coming back to those 99.1% numbers, even outside the Catholic Church, there are now secular movements advocating against masturbation. If you have some time, check the nonfap in Reddit. Their motives are otherwise, but they show that there is life without masturbation, and it is wonderful.

It’s fairly obvious that masturbation is wrong, even to a non-Catholic such as myself, a universal sort of morality always told me it was wrong even when doing it. Masturbation is an addictive and dangerous thing, I always felt ashamed after doing it and it took a long time to quit doing it but I have been much happier for it.
Somebody in another thread on this subject posted something by CS Lewis which was really accurate.
I was raised Catholic but I always thought that morality was something that is in the human mind from birth

If he had the intention to go to confession, regretted his sin and was sorry or asked for forgiveness then we can’t say he is going to hell. This is why we must never judge a person ever. Masterbation is a mortal sin however there are many things that can stop it and God’s mercy is much greater than our knowledge

Perhaps that is true, you don’t need to know the ten commandments to know that killing someone or stealing is wrong but when it comes to masturbation or other things involving sex, it’s a bit different in secular society.
