Hoosier Daddy,
So are you questioning the teachings on the allowance for the use of NFP? I mean my question respectfully. I really want to know why you have asked this type of question several times recently. Do you think that the American understanding of the Church’s teaching on NFP is faulty? What is it you really are pondering here? I, too, am working very hard to come to terms with this. I honestly feel, at this moment, that I have been the victim of bait-and-switch with my conversion experience. NFP was held out as an acceptable option for a couple who discerned they had good reasons to avoid pregnancy, and the Catholic faith was NOT associated with the Quiverfull teachings that is held to by certain streams within Protestantism. We happily learned NFP, and only used it a couple times briefly, but we had realized that at some point, I would reach “critical mass” in our household and would want to employ NFP until menopause. We thought that was a good and holy perspective. Now with some comments in this thread (some recent and some from last week) I am really feeling torn up over this, and I am tempted to throw up my hands and say “fine, I am selfish and I will continue to be selfish” (although I am expecting my fifth) simply because I have the perspective that it is acceptable to evaluate the risks and the circumstances, and decide that I have done all that I am personally capable of, and I want to transition away from babymaking and into grown-child launching.
I really hope you and others will respond to my concerns about this. I have participated in this thread from the beginning and I have found myself feeling shaken (my faith, my sanity…I am not sure which part of myself is shaken yet). At the beginning of this thread, I thought that for sure, maternal age and other risk factors were acceptable as just/serious/grave reasons, but the longer this thread has gone on and comments such as yours, HoosierDaddy, that I quoted, are really making me doubt myself and feel a bit cornered.
Anyway, God bless you and everyone. Hope you all are having a Happy Eastertide. And thanks for everyone contributing such deep thinking to an important topic.
