The league has its own issues.

It is not the official voice of the Catholic Church.

So, I’ll take what they say with a grain of salt.

If the mayor wants to tweet on any topic, so be it…it hardly constitutes “abuse of office”, what it does constitute is personal opinion…if voters (and not just the Catholic League) are upset they have every right to take those feelings into the voting booth.

The mayor, is under no obligation to uphold church teachings as an elected official. He does not answer to the Church in those matters.

If he is a Catholic, then there are ecclesiastic legal issues for him to deal with in defying the teachings of the Church, but those issues, while we as Catholics may consider to be serious enough to put his soul in jeopardy, his views are not an abuse of power.

The Catholic League needs to get over itself.🤷

Archbishop Chaput is a strong man of God and I’m sure he knew he would be attacked even from within the Church for upholding the teachings of Jesus. He doesn’t need support of fellow Catholics because he is proclaiming the Truth and wears the Armor of God but I’m sure he appreciates the Catholic League’s support just as all Catholics should be supporting him.

The Mayor’s personal opinions should be kept to himself imo, yes he has mis-used his office on an issue which he should not have. People in high places are unfortunately listened too, and his opinions can sway other opinions that’s the danger in this age when a large proportion of the electorate are listening to libaeralist agenda politicians than the church on church issues. So for politicians in general they don’t listen enough to the church (for instance what the church says on gay marriage so we have so-called (they call themselves) christian politicians that are pro gay marriage).

God bless Bill Donahue and the Catholic League. I wish we had a similar organisation here in South Africa to help defend our faith.

On a side note, the Church has taught abstinence outside marriage for thw thousand years, so I do not see how his grace Archbishop Chaput’s comments are so controversial.

I would disagree. A public official should not be attempting to tell a religion, any religion, who it can or cannot give it’s Sacraments to.

That most certainly IS an abuse of power.

Agreed. Henry VIII comes to mind.

Who is an official of the state telling a church what their doctrine and teachings should be?! He’s a public official and if the Church isn’t supposed to meddle in the affairs of the state - why is the state meddling in the affairs of the church?

Because we live in the era of the enshrined Double Standard. Perhaps you missed the Iowa “bathroom bill” interpretation in which the State of Iowa is saying churches must, in some circumstances, allow transgenders into the bathroom of their choice, irrespective of that church’s teachings on such matters. Suits have been filed. Iowa, of all places . . . I would have expected California.

Mayor Kenney appears to be going along with HC’s idea that “deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed”. Of course, this was in the context of abortion but it works with this situation as well. Didn’t Pope Francis say “who am I to judge?” I guess Mayor Kenney is the spokesman for the Almighty!

Iowa - who knew:shrug:?! I saw that on ‘World Over’ the other night. I think Iowa was the first ‘fly-over’ state to adjudicate for same-sex unions.

Excellent post! The secular State constantly insists that the Church keep its nose out of the business of running of the country.
…well, I mean apart from, you know…feeding the hungry, helping the homeless, providing shelter for victims of domestic violence, running health care services for HIV/AIDS sufferers.

What was the name of that lesbian Mayor who demanded (subpoened) church pastors in Houston to provide advance copies of their Sunday sermons so they could be screened for LGBTQ political correctness?

Except Henry lived in a monarchy and not a democratic republic…you can’t compare the two.

So why is Kenney trying to be a Henry and telling the Church what is supposed to do. The distribution of the Sacraments are NOT under the realm of political authority.

Since we do actually live in a democratic republic, one under the US Constitution, what Hizzoner is doing, is, by definition, is an abuse of political office.

Henry VIII? What in the world has a 16th English King have to do with 21st Century Philadelphia?

Officials of the State have gone head to head with the Church all throughout western history. When have they NOT, except in modern times and in western countries where Church and State are arguably separate?

BTW, the article didn’t mention that the Mayor is Catholic. It probably makes a difference.

The mayor has made a big deal about the fact that he is a Catholic.

And what businesses is Catholic doctrine on marriage to the mayor of Philadelphia? As a Catholic are you not concerned that An elected official declared that the Archbishop of Philadelphia is not a Christian?

He’s not telling them what they HAVE to do. He’s telling them he doesn’t like what they ARE doing.

He is not exercising the authority of his office, he is merely voicing his opinion.

Now, if he said, “All Catholic Churches in the city of Philadelphia must give the Eucharist to everyone or they will be taxed, or closed”, then there is an issue.

I happen to agree vehemently with the Archbishop and our Church.

But, this is just another of many overreactions by the Catholic League, in my opinion.

The Mayor of Philadelphia publicly declares that the Archbishop of Philadelphia is not a Christian and the Catholic league is overreacting for criticizing him? ???
