The Mayor of Philadelphia publicly declares that the Archbishop of Philadelphia is not a Christian and the Catholic league is overreacting for criticizing him? ???
I believe the Mayor tweeted that the Archbishop’s pronouncement was not a Christian thing to do. That is not the same thing as writing that the Archbishop is not Christian.

A distinction without a difference. That Catholics would defend this comment and instead attack a group dedicated to protecting the church from such slurs is baffling to me

The Philadelphia mayor tweeted: “Jesus gave us gift of Holy Communion because he so loved us. All of us. Chaput’s actions are not Christian.”

If the Catholic League is overreacting, I’m glad of it. What other Catholics are going to stand up to such talk?

Well, I’m not so sure about that. Being something vs acting upon that identity? Isn’t that what I hear all the time about our homosexual brothers and sisters?

Except Henry lived in a monarchy and not a democratic republic…you can’t compare the two.
Henry VIII objected to the teachings of the church and decided to take matters into his own hands and declared himself the head of the church in England. Henry VIII (a head of state) told the Catholic Church how to operate. Mayor Kenney (a head of state) is pulling the same stunt. It was the action I was speaking of and not the form of governance.

Also, Mayor Kenney may have been baptized Catholic, but he appears to have objections to the teachings of the church, especially when it comes to the matters of sexual relationships.

As an aside, a South American caller on Al Kresta’s show commented on his first impressions of Mass in the US. He was struck that people acted like they are entitled to Communion, where in South America, it might fall too far in the other direction. He wondered if this entitlement to communion was Protestant influence, since our heritage is more Protestant in nature. I don’t know, to be sure. It was interesting.

Are you thinking that the Mayor of Philadelphia is going to declare himself ‘Defender of the Faith?’ 🙂

I think you are wayyyy off here. There is no comparison whatsoever. One monarch spent years in conflict with the Pope over the validity of his marriage, and in a very complicated act, broke away from the authority of Rome.

Another elected mayor tweeted his views on Communion being denied to certain people and how he thought it was un-Christian.

???

I put this down as two wrongs do not make a right. The Catholic League should abide by the Golden Rule. I doubt there would be uproar over a politician tweeting that those who allowed abortion were not acting Christian. This was a politician tweeting his opinion. He is not alone. There are many others that just do not get Church teaching. This does not mean they are at war with the Church.

Using that standard, then since the Mayor is directly defying his Archbishop, one could use the Mayor’s standard and say that he is not acting Christian, correct?

I believe you are not seeing how close we are to the point where holding Christian values is considered illegal or punishable by the state.

You are right in that I do not believe that we are close to be imprisoned for our beliefs. But then again, I heard this same thing back in the seventies and we were already supposed to be in a police state and beheading Christians.

The mayor is absolutely not acting in a Christian manner with his message. He does not understand orthodox Catholic teaching.

He’s not telling them what they HAVE to do. He’s telling them he doesn’t like what they ARE doing.

He is not exercising the authority of his office, he is merely voicing his opinion.

Now, if he said, “All Catholic Churches in the city of Philadelphia must give the Eucharist to everyone or they will be taxed, or closed”, then there is an issue.

I happen to agree vehemently with the Archbishop and our Church.

But, this is just another of many overreactions by the Catholic League, in my opinion.
An elected politician can’t hide behind the private citizen screen.
Your not entitled to public personal opinions as an elected official. Especially if you make them to the press.
The power of his statements reflect and are magnified by his office. He knew what he was doing .
He was exposed as just a petty politician with an agenda throwing his weight around .Who would have paid attention to his remarks if not for his position ?
He was rightly called out by the league. I disagree with you can’t roll over on an issue like this.
That just emboldens your enemies .
The next thing you know they will be passing laws that only you have to obey.
Wait their already doing that.
I’m surprised bringing up religion in public didn’t have the ACLU up in arms asking for his resignation./S
