Sorry if this has been covered a million times before. I got into a discussion with a friend after watching The Passion of the Christ over Easter.

Is Mel Gibson actually a Catholic? From what I have read his father belongs to a group of sedevacantists, and his own membership is a mystery. Is he a heretic? I find some of the imagery, and the focus on the physicality of Christ’s sufferings in the Passion, gives the wrong impression of what Christ’s redemptive death and resurrection is all about. I found it hard to explain to my friend after the film that it is His obedience unto death, and not the number of times He is scourged, that purchased our salvation.
To be honest, I dont care what MG is…👍

Wait a minute. Not to be picky, Gramma, but you said just now:

But earlier in the thread, in response to john’s post here:

That was all rumor. It is on wikipedia. Mel is not a roman catholic.

Now to me, saying that Mel is “not a Roman Catholic” is saying that 'he is not a Catholic." You may have gone on (in fact you did) to qualify the statement, but you should acknowledge that you really DID say he was not, realized that what you MEANT was ‘not a Catholic in X sense’, and not try to give the impression that ‘you never said he wasn’t in the first place.’

Because you did, and not everybody (even yourself) has the time to read through and see your ‘emendations’, especially if you are acting as though you had never ‘erred’ in the first place.

Just a friendly suggestion. . .we all make errors, and it’s really no biggie to admit them. If people are going to jump all over you and refuse to ‘accept’ your humanity, then it’s their problem, not yours, isn’t it? And most people here are not going to ‘jump’, but instead will be quite appreciative, and understanding.
Perhaps I didn’t explain myself well sometimes I don’t, but either way asking for clarification would have been more appropriate then jumping the gun which some chose to do willfully. He is Catholic in one sense as I stated but not Roman Catholic. In my view if you don’t follow the Pope you aren’t Catholic. That is how I feel on the matter. l hope that clarifies it for you.

I commented in this thread simply to state what I knew in regards to it. Some have chosen to believe otherwise. Their choice, but as I stated last night it is over for me I will not continue in the same vein. 😉

Sorry I don’t believe in putting down the Fathers whether I agree with them or not. Though I can respect your opnion I haven’t seen anything to prove he is in error but your opinion so if you wish to admire Gibson over the Archbishop that is between you and the Lord.
Mel Gibson did more to bring “Christ Consciousness” to the world than a bishop that advocates a homosexual priesthood. (PLEASE NOTE: NO NAMES OF ANY BISHOPS WERE NAMED. THIS IS A GENERIC STORY ONLY)

Thank you, my operceptions on this is compatible with the Church and with the Lord.

Mel served God and was persecuted for it (making the Passion). His reward in Heaven will be profound. Mel risked bodily injury and death of his career. How many of us would be willing to put ourselves out as much for Our savior? You? Me? That is a question only an individual can or cannot answer.
