Mel Gibson claims Catholicism but has his own brand. He started his own church in California which is not recognized by Rome.

here is a website that gives a bit of detail of his path at the moment. splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp?aid=719
wow, I can’t believe you cited the SPLC for anything. The SPLC is so anti-Catholic it’s beyond comprehension. It’s members feel the Catholic church is a hate group. I wouldn’t believe anything coming from that group.
In my HO, if the SPLC doesn’t like Mel Gibson, then I think Mel must be doing something right.

Pope John Paul did NOT kiss the koran!
The Holy Father did indeed kiss the Koran. It wasn’t the apocalyptic act of apostacy that some like to make out, but yes, he did kiss it (though from the picture, he could also be simply sniffing it). Any rate, it was just an act of courtesy. A bad idea, wish he hadn’t done it, but nonetheless, NOT what some attempt to make out.

I think he’s smelling it. 😉

As far as it pertains to The Passion of the Christ, I could care less if Mel Gibson is Catholic. He’s certainly Christian of some flavor, and for making Christian art, that’s good enough for me. Many excellent works of art have been made by Protestant and Orthodox artisans. They’re awesome and I appreciate them fully.

On a personal note, I hope that Mel Gibson is Catholic for the sake of his soul.

I’ve wondered if you couldn’t make a case for sniffing it, too, but I’m afraid we would be grasping at straws.

I agree with you about the Passion. It draws me closer and closer to Christ and His Blessed Mother.

I think JP II just forgot his glasses and is trying to figure out “which ways up”.🙂

I too hope Mel Gibson returns to Catholicism.

Actually, I have a video of the now-famous “Koran Kissing” event. If you listen closely, just before the famous picture was taken, you can hear John Paul II ask “is this real leather?”.

I knew it! I KNEW it!

Okay…now, that is funny. 😃 Would it have been impolite to have taken a lighter to it, like they do to leather coats in the Shanghai market to prove they are leather? 😛

That said, can you guys get back to Mel…the moderator already admonished everyone for being OT on this subject and then closed down the thread regarding the same.

Let me help you…

That Mel, is he a Tradional Catholic or what? 🙂

I think that the more correct term would be radical traditionalist.

Tim Staples told me Mel was a Sedevacantist. I asked him how he was so sure. He said that Scott Hahn had been invited to a pre-screening of the Passion and asked Mel if he believed John Paul II was the Pope. According to what Tim told me, Mel responded by saying NO!

Mel Gibson is a schismatic.

Well, it is kind of third-hand knowledge, so…not good enough for a court trial, but good enough for me… 👍

Again, it doesn’t detract from the quality of his work on The Passion of the Christ.

Yes, he is. Was in his church and it was a catholic salmon. Only in latin.

Isn’t Malibu in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles? If I lived there and had the money, I’d probably build my own chapel and hire my own priest too.
