mja - hope my response did not make you think I was using psycobabble. Fornication and adultery certainly are sins and it should not be fudged over or excused - and I admire that you come across strongly because you wish that truth be told because you think a soupy sympathy - may excuse the sin and imperil the soul and that is not good. So I see the good in your heart of wanting the truth. “Preach the truth!” Hey I’m all with you there and I too have become frustrated when I see it not being taught. Give me a Fr. Corapi priest any day. There’s no mincing of words there.
When the people gathered to throw stones at the woman caught in adultery - Jesus had compassion on the woman - and after everyone left he told her “Go and sin no more.” So that’s what I wished to convey.
When my mother corrected me when I did something wrong she’d let me cry a bit so that I’d learn what I did was not good - but then she’d gather me in her arms and kiss and hug me and say “Mama loves you but you can’t do that.” So I was taught that my action was wrong but I was still loved and it makes you understand what love is. It makes you come back and want to do what is right quicker than an admonishment without love.

Can you imagine how many people who already resented and hated Mel Gibson’s success are now rejoicing and rubbing his nose in it. Look at the “hypocritical” high profiled Catholic.
I feel sorrow for him, and his family.
He must be miserable. It is sad to see a guy fall from grace after contributing his personal account of faith through the Passion’. I liked Mel Gibson but it seemed to slowly decline and fall for him after 2006 when he was first caught in that drunken tirade…it would be nice to see him get picked back up and helped but he seems to be lost, truly lost.
I think it’s good to send prayers their way, because it’s a lot harder to walk the narrow path in that world.
Frankly, I’m not a fan of using what we hear in the media to condemn a man’s personal problems, including the drunken tirade, I won’t judge.
If you look at the dark moments in one’s own family life, or people, you’d understand that they are hypocrites looking to prop themselves up when knocking men down.
I don’t believe in that for a second, there is any truth, when someone’s private life is aired out in public for people to mock and preach from their pulpit of disapproval.

No one is saying that Mel Gibson’s sin is “excused.” You make it sound like he or we believe that he is still living his Catholic faith valiantly, even though he sinned. Of course he isn’t!
I look at Mel like a relative I love who is an alcoholic and has fallen off of the wagon. You wouldn’t tell that person “Ha! I thought you stopped drinking…HYPOCRITE!” You would reach out to them in love and pray for them.
He needs our prayers, so he can repent and return to his faithfulness. We are all sinners, and many of us have had similar experiences. A “serious Catholic” will feel awful about it and pray for that person in love.

When I use the term psychobabble I mean modern psychology that blames experience for behavioural pathologies that the Catholic catechism has always defined as SINS.For example: I was left alone in my room too often by my cold mother so I steal from 7/11 to compensate, my father never kissed me so I have serial adulterous affairs to compensate, my granny was mean to me so I have a compulsion to molest farm animals and I can’t control it. Or how about this one, my manic depression makes me so sad I have to scandalize all of Catholicism with my high profile adulterous affair. Get the drift.

I am trying really hard to be charitable but it seems you have no idea what it is like for a person who has Manic depression (Bipolar). There is a reason why those with Manic Depression **need to take medication ** because it often causes those who suffer from this condition to have **Jekyll and Hyde **ups and downs in their personality.
I don’t know how Mr. Gibson is treating his Manic depression but neither you nor I know what is going on behind the scenes of his life and so to try and belittle anyone’s mental or physical conditions is **completely uncalled for. **
You are no one to judge Mr. Gibson or John/Jane Doe down the street.

I do agree whole heartedly with you. I think some people need to learn that before attempting to remove the speck from their brother’s eye, they need to remove the LOG from their own. He who judges will be judged.
I guess it hurts the Catholic Community a little deeper to expose the adulterous flings of a high profile celebrity who produced such a block buster as The Passion. Gives them more fuel for their constant Catholic bashing. Quite scandalous unfortunately.
Needless to say, he needs prayer.

Thanks for pointing it out. Some people do not understand the seriousness of mental illness.
If you have some who have it in the family, then it helps to understand why it’s so important a virtue we learn in our faith, not to judge people’s actions on appearance, because we don’t know the situation behind closed doors and the pain for those involved, who have a better measure of a person’s heart.
Also the “psychobabble” comment :
is just dismissive, for the sake of it. While it is true that America’s culture does have some overanalyzation and patchiness, in the psychiatric profession (blame the parents, pass on the blame etc.), there is still some concrete situations in terms of psychological conditions.
If a brother is weak, then they need to be helped up…Doesn’t mean we can’t be sympathetic.
Bipolar Condition/ Manic/Depression has nothing to do with the “nurture” side of the behavioral psychology anyway…so the criticism holds very little merit in this case. It has physiological evidence.

I do not know if this girlfriend’s appearance was not one of those many tricks people are using now a days to destroy the reputation of a person, special the secular media that enjoys it very much. Neither I know if Gibson was immune from sin.
But I can say with all certitude that marriage is a sacrament where man and woman promised to God to love and forgive each other, no matter how big the betrayal is. Jesus himself was betrayed by His own friend however, on the cross, He asked the Father to forgive those (us) who put Him to death. We must be merciful if we want to receive mercy from God.
During His ministry, Jesus asked the accusers of the Magdalene to whomever is without sin to throw the first stone. At that point beginning from the elders, everyone started to walk away.
We Catholics pray instead of participating any gossiping. The Divine Mercy Chaplet will heal everyone’s wounds. I am praying for their reconciliation -for God nothing is impossible.

We also don’t know, assuming this is not a camera trick, what these two do behind closed doors. We see a picture of what appears to be a well-known celebrity holding hands with a younger woman (actually, she may even be a relative needing some emotional support due to things in her own life). Thing is, we don’t know everything including any mental status problems and should not be jumping to rash judgement (let alone gossip). Private and personal, constructive, fraternal correction is one thing, but public condemnation is quite another!
