Just tell him how much you respect, love and cherish him.
That’s what I said!
Sheesh, you are all intellectualising this issue too much.
It is really a communication issue.
Get talking. Tell him, not us.
Go.
Hurry up…
Do it.

Then come back and tell us how he reacted.
We’re just dying to know…😃

I can relate A LOT to this thread. Mini-Me, your relationship with your dh sounds a lot like mine. The advice you’ve gotten from the men here sounds pretty concrete to me. You really do just have to come out and say what you need.

My dh is a very mellow, down to earth, laid back kind of guy. He really lives “Husband’s love your wives like Christ loves the Church”… and the more I realized that, the more I realized I never TOLD him that. For a husband trying to live out his faith in his marriage, a compliment like that will go a long way in letting him know that you really do respect him as the head of the family.

My dh and I have pretty sarcastic senses of humor, and when the romantic stuff rears it’s head, we usually can’t get through it w/o laughing or making some kind of joke about how cheesy we sound. We say “I love you” all the time and we have great conversations, and we both are always cracking each other up. But after 12 yrs of marriage and 3 beautiful children, we do start to take that relationship for granted. I’m very happy following his lead, and he knows that, but I am more the planner, the over-thinker, etc…
My dh is constantly trying to reconcile his nice guy-people pleaser personality with the alpha male personality that society/his job/his extended family expects of him.

For my dh, hearing that he’s a good father is also a huge ego boost. Literally, all it takes is for me to say, “You’re such a good father” and I can see a visible reaction in his eyes or his body language. A very silent, “thanks, I needed that”. Usually, he’ll just give me a kiss, or return the compliment, as undeserving as it may be that day (:o). But…true to our relationship, I have to avoid it sounding too much like a Hallmark card, so I’ll throw it out there while he’s laying breathless on the floor from a fierce lightsaber battle. Your son is still young yet, so those moments are yet to come, but when they do, make sure you say something. Even now, if your dh steps in to “rescue” you from a screaming baby or volunteers to change a diaper or make dinner or fold the laundry - anything - make sure you acknowlege it. Keep in mind, men usually DO where we women SAY. Just you noticing how he’s helping you is] his way of trying to be the support/head of household that you’re wanting.

If you want/need something different or more than what he’s giving, you just have to say it.

I recently just told my dh that I really wanted him to take a more dominant role as the spiritual head of our family. Lead the prayers, give “the look” when the kids are acting up in Mass", etc… Something he would’ve never known I really wanted unless I told him.

You’ve already said you notice how you’re on the pc when he’s watching tv, sort of ignoring him- again, I could’ve written the exact same thing! :o That’s us on many nights. You think it just works in your relationship, but most of the time, they’re not going to engage you in conversation. Your dh leaving you alone to be on the pc is again, another way he’s showing you his love for you. But the fact that you had the insight to notice you were doing that tells me you’re already on the right track in changing it.

If you want to be more submissive, ask your dh what’s one thing you could do to be a better wife to him. I recently did just that and all he said was, “wear something cute”…to which I frowned, of course, as if to say, “what? so you don’t think my sweat pants and hair tripled folded up into a scrunchy is hot?” 😃 … but that’s all he gave me…it was up to me to honestly reflect. Knowing that men tend to be more visual…what do I really look like when he comes home after I’ve spent the day schooling the kids, cleaning the house, sweating, breaking up fights, sweating, doing laudry, having a mud-pie tea party, downing 6 cups of coffee, more sweating… it doesn’t mean he doesn’t love me just the way I am. In fact, he would’ve never said anything had I not directly asked, but I did ask, so he told me. So, even though I thought his request was totally ridiculous, 😛 I did what he wanted…and it had the unintended consequence of making ME feel better about myself! So, before he gets home, I sneak in a shower. If I don’t get it in then, I at least spritz myself w/body spray and grab the shower after dinner. After the kids go to bed, I actually change clothes, release my crrrazy hair from it’s scrunchy, “brush” it, spritz myself again with something I know he likes, and just hang out like we always do. The “something cute” I’m wearing doesn’t necessarily mean I excavate the cute teddy’s from the back of the closet, in fact, it’s usually just actual GIRL pj’s. 😃 but it’s NOT the grungy sweat pants and over-sized tshirt I’ve been in since before he left for work that morning.

Praise God for the fact that you do have a mellow husband, and in asking him how you can be more submissive to him, that will let him know that you want him to be more dominant. 😉

This is so us. We are both super sarcastic. We do say I love you multiple times a day, and we do have great conversations & make eachother laugh. It sounds like we have a lot in common!!!

For my dh, hearing that he’s a good father is also a huge ego boost. Literally, all it takes is for me to say, “You’re such a good father” and I can see a visible reaction in his eyes or his body language. A very silent, “thanks, I needed that”. That’s good advice. I really do need to tell him what a great father he is, because it’s true. He’s amazing.

I recently just told my dh that I really wanted him to take a more dominant role as the spiritual head of our family. Lead the prayers, give “the look” when the kids are acting up in Mass", etc… Something he would’ve never known I really wanted unless I told him.

This is another big thing for me. I might say that I am more spiritually “advanced” than DH which makes this a bit more difficult. As I mentioned in a prior post, he was only “culturally Catholic” when we met, and gradually came around to at least attending Mass with me sometimes, eventually actually turning in to a practicing Catholic. But my faith knowledge is far deeper than his, because he doesn’t really take time to read and reflect like I do - he’s not much of a sit-still kind of guy. He knows what he knows from CCD as a kid and what he absorbs from homilies and things, but I am one that has put a lot of my own time into learning the faith. I really would love him to emerge as the spiritual leader, but am unsure what I can do to encourage that as well.

If you want to be more submissive, ask your dh what’s one thing you could do to be a better wife to him.

Great idea! 🙂

I really am going to try to talk about it with him as I know I should. We’re just not great at serious conversations most of the time.

Thanks so much for your (name removed by moderator)ut!!! I’m glad I’m not alone!

Way late in posting on this one. Happily married now 45 years.

Every marriage is unique just as there are no identical sunsets. Each spouse has different abilities and needs and goals and these change (stronger, weaker, new, gone) over time.

It helps me to think in terms of Physical, Mental, Spiritual, and Emotional. The mix is shifting all day every day. Do we know ourselves well enough at every moment that we can conjure up the ability to say what we think and how we feel? Frequently feelings and thoughts are hard to express. The loving spouse just has to feel it too, or be patient, or inquire.

My personal definition of LOVE is putting the other person’s needs and wants ahead of mine, and they get to define their needs and wants. In a word - service - to the loved one. Service is a gift of love. Works for my relationship with my wife and also for God.

Mutual love, in turn, satisfies my needs and wants. I satisfy her while she satisfies me in many ways. Same with God too. Not instantly in every instance but often enough and well enough for our love relation to grow. Each lover is sensitive to the loved one’s current need and want. Today, shortly, it’ll be a nice lunch out. We already rehung the curtain now that the repainting is finished in that room.

“And the two shall become one” She has her particular interests and I mine; we allow each other time and resources to satisfy those interests, but the majority of our time and resources are for each other and the family. All our major decisions are discussed over a periood of time so we can reflect on the idea and come to a point where each of us supports the decision that affects both of us. If she has the better idea, I adopt it; if I do, she accepts it. I value my wife’s (name removed by moderator)ut but I do make most of the major decisions, although she makes some. She seems very happy with our process.

Individually and together, God is central in our lives. Life is hard to do well over the long haul without God. Eternity is impossible without God. God’s greatest commandment is LOVE. The rest falls into its proper places.

Thank you for the book recommendations - I will definitely check them out.

Over the last couple of days, I have really been trying to make a conscious effort to treat DH with more respect. I think that in a lot of ways we’re such “buddies” (we play video games together, watch sports, etc - I’ve always related better to guys then girls as friends and I guess it spills over into the marriage) that I don’t even think about whether I’m being respectful or treating him as the leader of our little family. I noticed that sometimes when we’re just hanging out watching TV at night (and I’m often on the computer while he’s watching TV) after baby goes to bed, he’ll just be talking casually about what we’re watching or whatever and I don’t really pay attention, and I certainly don’t stop what I’m doing to give him my full attention. I realized today that I wouldn’t do that to anyone else. So I will make a point to give my full attention even if he’s talking about the etrade commercial LOL And this evening, I asked him what he wanted to be my priority with regard to housework tomorrow, and he did express his preference, so that’s what I will concentrate on that.

I’m still eager to hear any concrete ideas for showing my respect and encouraging DH to lead. Thanks all!
the most important time is when its the hardest, when you disagree and when you are angry. But remember it isnt submission if you punish him for not agreeing with you. Submission and respect isnt about getting him to give you orders. I lead my home but my wife gets her way 99.5% of the time(she gave me that #) Her happiness and security is my priority. Why dont you tell him that you want to be a good wife and ask him what submission means to him?

Has anyone thought to tote up the strengths and weaknesses of each party to a marriage. As an analogy, it would be a bit rediculous asking a husband to choose the colour of a wall if he’s colour blind. Or asking a wife to choose what car to buy when she knows nothing about cars. Horses for courses, I say.

Maybe a husband is laid back because the things that make him laid back he’s either comfortable with, or they are not overly important to him. If you want to have him dominate in every aspect of your life, you are firstly, asking too much of him and, secondly, subverting your own God given intelligence which is probably one of the attributes which your husband found attractive in the first place.

Stop worrying about it. Be yourself and let him be himself.
Well, that’s my assertive male opinion for today.😃
I agree, I want submissive but I dont want a wife that needs to be micro-managed.

There is a great deal of truth in the saying that opposites attract.

And I think that all too many women spend all too much time trying to figure out how to be submissive, and assuming that means denying who they are - intelligent, well thought out, having opinions that have foundation, having common sense (which is not all that common to begin with), being organized, being planners, capable of making rational, sound, good decisions, being nurturing; the list goes on…

God had a hand in the design of who you are. All of us have rough edges, imperfections, faults and areas of sinfulness. Welcome to the club. But that does not mean that the good things you have in your makeup and personality are sinful because they do not match whatever image you have of what “submissive” means. They are gifts you have been given; and if they are gifts which your husband does not particularly have an equal share of (or any share of, for that matter), God has brought the two of you together to become as one. If the pieces interlock, don’t fight it. What does the word “love” mean? What does it mean to you? How do you do that - whether in the car going some place; planning about children, talking about finances (the leading cause of friction in marriages), dealing with in-laws and out-laws; dealing with whatever work your spouse does - or you do -; in church; in the bedroom…
Worry a whole lot less about the issue of submission, and a whole lot more about love and communication, and the issue of any biblical need to be “submissive” should take care of itself without a lot of extra thought.

This is true, but the spouse who is the more dominant, take charge one, needs to pay special attention to stop themselves from time to time to make sure that they are giving the more passive or quiet spouse the chance to speak up. I think this is especially true when the more passive spouse is the husband. I think a take charge type of wife does need to make the conscious effort to not constantly order her husband about and to ask for, value, and respect his opinions. I think their children need to see their parents respect each other. I think both spouses really do need to take the time to care for each other, physically and emotionally.

Absolutely - which is why I couched it in terms of love. Love is patient, love is kind…

Great post.

I have a hard time being submissive, too. I had a bad father and a very abusive ex. I’m not trying to make excusses. I know it may look that way. I am trying. It is especially hard in the area of our finances, because I manage them. I’m interested in reading everyone’s advice.

sub- mission means you are ***under the same mission ***as your husband. if a woman has a husband who understands his mission is to give up his life for his family like Christ did for his church, then she’s immensely blessed.

she can help him give up his life by accepting his gift-- however flawed it may sometimes be. she can help him in his mission by encouraging him, loving him, total self giving, supporting him, and continually befriending him.

he gives up his life for his family by doing the same for her and for his children.

the devil works hard to keep us blind of this truth. but the Holy Spirirt instructs the Church beautifully:
1607 According to faith the disorder we notice so painfully does not stem from the nature of man and woman, nor from the nature of their relations, but from sin. As a break with God, the first sin had for its first consequence the rupture of the original communion between man and woman. Their relations were distorted by mutual recriminations; their mutual attraction, the Creator’s own gift, changed into a relationship of domination and lust; and the beautiful vocation of man and woman to be fruitful, multiply, and subdue the earth was burdened by the pain of childbirth and the toil of work.
1608 Nevertheless, the order of creation persists, though seriously disturbed. To heal the wounds of sin, man and woman need the help of the grace that God in his infinite mercy never refuses them.Without his help man and woman cannot achieve the union of their lives for which God created them “in the beginning.”

My wife handles our day to day finances, we discus our goals and what we want and I make the big decisions with Her well fair my top priority. My pastor told me it was not my job to make my wife submit(we used to fight about it) , He said it was my job to be the kind of man she would want to submit to. She had to know that she is my first ministry, her security is job one. This radicaly changed our marriage.

I wanted to throw in my $0.02.

Some of the ways I respect my husband:
  1. I do not undermine his authority with the children – even if I disagree with his decision, I will wait until they are in bed to bring it up.
  2. I always consult with him about major purchases – I have never bought anything that cost more than $80 or $100 without consulting with him. I also do not lie about or hide things I buy. (Trust me, I know a lot of women who do this!!!)
  3. I do not commit us to any outing/party/trip without consulting with him. If my mom calls and says “Want to come for dinner next week?” I say “I’d like to, but I will check with M to see if he’s got anything planned.” I will, of course, express my opinion if I really want to go, or think it’s important to go, but I don’t make decisions unilaterally. (I know a woman who planned and booked an entire Caribbean vacation without asking her husband if he wanted to go!!!)
  4. I try not to nag over the little things that annoy me. Even though my blood might be boiling because, for example, I asked if he would do something and he agreed but didn’t do it – I always WAIT… I try never to speak in anger. 99% of the time, I wind up getting over it pretty quick and think – “That’s just to petty to get into a fight over!”
I hope these help – I think it’s all the “little things” that can make a real difference.

I think I have all but # 4 covered LOL That one’s a bit tricky 😃 I have been trying to work on that myself!

What great advice from your pastor. This is kind of the angle I have been trying to take now (from the opposite side of course). I realized I should submit rather or not he really expects me to. My end of the deal isn’t eliminated just because my husband is laid back. So I’ve been trying to do things the way I know he prefers, even though he may not ask me to.

And in response to some of the general posts on here, I have absolutely NO DESIRE to be micromanaged. NONE. I would not be able to handle that. 🙂

Actually, it comes from the Latin sub + mitto, basically put or place something under something else (submissio is the noun). It doesn’t have anything to do with a mission.
And in response to some of the general posts on here, I have absolutely NO DESIRE to be micromanaged. NONE. I would not be able to handle that. 🙂
Micromanagement is immoral because it negates free will, offends dignity and leaves no room for growth (except when you do micromanage rookies for growth but husband =/= drill sergeant).
I hope these help – I think it’s all the “little things” that can make a real difference.
I agree (as a man). My choice of little things would show different positions, but this isn’t the point. On the other hand, small things can be ignorable if big things are in order. I’d tend to see a big cause behind any concentration of small things.

A wise pastor and a perceptive listener.

Heh. I knew a priest who used to say this in his homilies all the time. It always seemed like a super convenient way to translate a Latin word spliced together with an English word. 😛 I grant you, he had a congregation full of college women who were dead set on their MRS. degrees, so why not assure them that the meaning of the word was to help their husbands help them? I’m not trying to bash your Catholicism and what, but I personally am happier when I have an accurate understanding, even if it is uncomfortable.
