Menopause - when?

I’m 45 and have been in peri-menopause for about 1.5 yrs. How did I find out? I had a period every two weeks for two months. Yes, it can happen. The doctor got a chuckle out it. Now I get a period every 4-6 weeks on average. I have skipped a month once. Hot flashes aren’t much of a problem. I have some, but they’re mild.

Well, I can’t exactly help out in this. I had a complete hysterectomy nearly six years ago. Instant menopause. I’m 46 now, and I’m still hard to get along with! Did I say I’m just a bit crabby? I think that would be like comparing Godzilla with a mosquito.

I am thankful for all the responses.

I guess there isn’t anything we can do to delay the inevitable (is there:confused: )

It really does seem that every woman’s experience is different. How amazing that is.

50 last August - and no sign of anything in that regard yet (Wrinkles and grey hair - yes). And my 7 year old is going through a “I wish I had a baby brother/sister” phase!

Perimenopause began several years ago. During the last six months the symptoms have become much more noticeable. Night sweats, two week cycles, very short periods (1-2 days), and mood swings. I’m 44. My mother thinks she had menopause when she was 50 but she isn’t sure.

I told my husband that perimenopause is causing me to have more mood swings and made the mistake of saying that I have pre-PMS, PMS and post-PMS, which means that I am “normal” one week a month. He looked at me and asked how he could tell which week was the normal one. Yeah, I walked into that one.

LOL are YOU going through that phase as well??

Age 50 and done with by age 51. No muss, no fuss. Mama started hers at 37 and was in her mid forties before she got through it and she was a Dragon Lady although she denied it until my sisters marched her to the doctor and HE told her. My doctor said that it is individual for each woman and what your Mama had or did would not apply to you, which was a great relief.

I have occasional lapses of language in which I can’t think of the word or name of something I know well and have to fret and circumlocate until I can come up with it. And I did have a couple of days when I would have blank-outs and suddenly come aware that I was somewhere I could not remember going! That turned out to be a reaction to blood pressure medication, thank God.

Well, I went back and checked my numbers last night, and it looks like things are getting more unreliable???

I think I’m going from around 26 days to around 30…but maybe the stress of mom’s death in Dec threw me off… I don’t know…

I guess I’ll have to keep tracking!

I had several years of wacky cycles beginning in my late 30s, and then stopped completely at 43, 13 years ago.

I had a fairly mild go-round with hot flashes, etc., and never took hormones. The biggest downer I had was the seemingly instant crashing of my metabolism and subsequent weight gain. Quite a shock after being tall and slim all my life! I’m putting up a good fight, though.

lol. I have a feeling U B male, BamaRider. It’s a wanting to give LIFE issue, for many women. God bless you, for your willingness to read and learn! 😉

Psssssst “funny”. 49. :coolinoff:

I am glad to read that there are other “late” menopause people like me.
When I was still regularly having period in my early 50’s, I asked my Gyn how long it would be. He said he had one patient who didn’t go into menopause til 54. So I was waiting for that magic year to appear!
Anyway, that year I missed a period for the first time in my life, (except when pregnant or breastfeeding), had two, missed one again, had two, then they stopped.
The only thing like a hot flash is occasionally, at night, my back will get very hot, like a sunburn.
By the way, I remember in a cell biology course I took in college, it was said that the average woman releases 400 eggs in her lifetime. So, if you released one egg a month, all the months from menarche to menopause, subtracting those months of no periods, the number should be about 400.

Regular as clockwork until I just stopped at 53 or so. Called my mom one fine day and told her I had good news – I wasn’t pregnant. The only other times I had gone 9 months without a period, I had a baby! She didn’t think I was terribly funny . . . 😉

Minimal symptoms, minimal discomfort, no hormones. Mom experienced it the same way; my doctor said the way one’s mother or sisters experience menopause is the best predictor of how a person will go through it.

I have that problem too. I hate it. I can be pointing to an object and not be able to name it. Funny thing is the women in my office know exactly what I am talking about. A trick I learned from someone who was recovering from a stroke…his therapist taught him this to help the connection between his brain and his speech…do simple mathematical equations…1 + 1 = 2, 2+2=4, etc. It does work. He told me his therapist told him something about right brain/left brain synapsis, or something like that.

Early 50s was when some symptoms started. Mild depression, night hot flashes, but I knew what caused them and just gutted them out. Then I started having VERY heavy periods and went to the doctor. I had several fibroid tumors and had a hysterectomy 5 years ago. I’m now 57 and have had smooth sailing ever since.

Crossword puzzles help immensely, too! 😉

As do Sudoku and any other mind type puzzle game.

MarieVeronica, I see you have a pretty high post count but this is the first I have seen you here on the Family Life forums, welcome to these forums.

Thank you, Brenda! How sweet!:curtsey:

I “discovered” the Family Life forums… in my attempt to post the “Fight FOCA” information. I spend most of my time in the Spirituality or Liturgy Forums.

This Forum is very nice. It’s like entering a warm house. So many caring posts, and threads. God bless.

Started hot flashes & night sweats in my 30s, and they continued right up until my 50s. Sometime in there, I went crazy and stocked up on pads & tampons like there was no such thing as menopause.😛 You guessed it: That was the last of it…
I have been stocking the ladies’ rest room at my church for several years now; I find a box of (whatever) stowed away, & take it over & stick it in the cupboard.

Oh yeah. Isn’t that fun? I spent the better (:o ) part of a year calling the post office the 🤷 “potato store”. And I called a friend on the phone & asked, “Where do they put dead people?”
She said, “Morgue?”
“No, the other one”.
“Cemetary?”
"That’s it…and hung up on her. I had:whacky: forgotten that ** she had moved from across the street, to out of state two years before this**…I also:doh2: forgot making the call. I had to call her back when I got my bill, & :blush:ask her why I called her & only talked for 1 minute…:blushing:…
