Some of you may remember the big stink caused by PETA over how the Trappist monks at Mepkin Abbey (in South Carolina) were raising eggs. The monks were following industry standards, but that wasn’t good enough for PETA.

The bad publicity caused Mepkin Abbey to abandon their decades old egg business. They spent months looking at different possibilities, even welcoming suggestions from outsiders. In the end, they decided on raising mushrooms. Those mushrooms are now being sold in some grocery stores and being used in some Charleston restaurants.

This news story is three months old, but it talks about what will happen in the near future. And that future is now! 🙂
Oyster mushrooms grown at Mepkin Abbey soon will be sold at three Piggly Wiggly stores in the Lowcountry.
Locally based Piggly Wiggly had been the sole retailer of Mepkin Abbey eggs before the monks began to phase out production more than a year ago. Looking for a new source of income, Mepkin started growing mushrooms last fall.
Oyster mushrooms are known for their sweet, woodsy flavor and distinct aroma. The abbey’s mushrooms will be sold in 6-ounce packages featuring recipes from the Moncks Corner monastery’s cook, Brother Joe.

Nice. In case you didn’t know, the pictures that PETA supposedly had of the chicken coupes at Mepkin, where actually pictures from some other chicken farm. The Trappists didn’t fight back because they are pacifists.

PETA is evil. They would never dream of going after Eggland’s best or some other large farm. Just the small religious farm that is more humane than 90% of all other egg farms. And especially when they know that the religious order takes the whole “turn the other cheek” thing very literally!

In more recent news, PETA is trying to shut down the horse drawn carriages in Charleston as well. Their argument is that we force the horses to breath fossil fuels as they drag tourists around town. I suppose they would prefer we leave the horses to be sent to the glue factory.

I didn’t think at the time that the monks should have given in to PETA’s demands. They didn’t have to fight, just ignore them. If a lawsuit was brought, they’re allowed to defend themselves, even as pacifists. I think public opinion would have driven the nuts out of town…

There are three religious orders in the Church whose founders forbade them from ever defending themselves in any public court:
  1. Cistercians (including the Trappists)
  2. Franciscans (including the Secular Franciscans)
  3. Missionaries of Charity
You cannot violate the wishes of your founder.

Fraternally,

JR 🙂

Wow, I did not know that. Do you think PETA knew this when they specifically targeted the monks’ egg farm? Might explain why they went after them…

YES! That was my point. They went after the religious people who they knew wouldn’t fight back.

I didn’t know that either. I hope the mushroom rights people don’t appear on the scene…but I wouldn’t be surprised…Roanoker

We can be sure that these HOLY men will be attacked again. The devil does not stop working against good.

I am very amazed and proud that they didn’t fight back, by not fighting back they showed such strength. PETA only showed their weakness, although the world will never see it as such.

The monks really did show their strength in pacifist actions.

With PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) going against the raising of eggs, do you think there will be somesort of response from PETF (People for the Ethical Treatment of Fungi)? lol.

Whilst I was actually joking over the PETF statement, I did actually find a place that has ethical treatment of plants… I’m flabbergasted…

God Bless.

Why did their founders forbid them from defending themselves in court?

Why did their founders forbid them from defending themselves in court?
To more perfectly imitate the Lord, who was silent before the Sanhedrin “like a lamb, dumb before the slaughter”.

Just as Christ refused to give a wicked court the pleasure of a defence, so too do these orders maintain their silence before unjust charges leaving the ultimate judgement to God.

If you’re guilty, you are bound in conscience to confess. If you are innocent, you give greater glory to God by your sacrifice.
