Certainly there are people in heaven today. As for in hell, we cannot say for certainty considering that God is a compassionate, merciful, forgiving and loving God. Neverheless we believe that the fallen angel, a.k.a. Satan is there.
Is Satan in hell… let’s see…(Rev 12:9) And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Hi Stevie,

With all do respect, many people will rely more on what a church says then what the Bible says.

Analogy: I love my parents very much. If I was a teenager and my parents told me that there was nothing wrong with smoking and my friend told me that it wasn’t because of the following reasons… Would it be of my best interest to listen to my parents and do what they say because they have more knowledge and wisdom then me. Or, should I, with caution ,examine the reasons my friend had for not smoking.
During Jesus’ time the Pharisees had the knowledge of the OT, where they correct with the Messiah?
Sorry, not quite understanding your point here. The Pharisees didn’t recognise Jesus. No, most didn’t but there must have been some in the thousands of those converted by the Apostles (wasn’t Paul a Pharisee? Not sure). The Church says that there is a hell, the bible says that there is a hell, are you saying that just as the Pharisees were blind to the truth with all their advantages, then we might be? Saint Paul says:
“For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, of this mystery, (lest you should be wise in your own conceits), that blindness in part has happened in Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles should come in”.
So the blindness appears to part of God’s plan. I don’t think He has a plan to hide the truth of Hell from his Church.

But where is your Truth? From what does it emerge?
Seeker, of all faiths UU is the most baseless to me. Honestly, I say this with all due respect. I understand the concept of “all is good” but of what authority and/or of what basis do you come to this conclusion? Where does it begin and where does it end?

Christians believe in a fallen mankind in need of a savior. This Savior was provided by God Himself. He is freely given but NOT freely recieved. We MUST respond to HIs offer. I believe I stated this in a manner that is ecumenical.

What do UU’s believe? “All is good?”. If so then by what reason, by what value do we exist? It seems to me there is no reason. Ever notice you feel your best when you work to accomplish something? Faith is a work. Just expecting all to be good is of no benefit to anyone.

It’s a lovely concept Seeker, but it falls apart. Love is not easy it si difficult. But it comes with rewards for all who Love as God Loves. Not simply by all who exist.

Said in profound respect and with love. Hope you understand. Forgive me if you see otherwise.
My “Truth” is lived out in the daily of my life…my “Truth” is expressed with every kind word I speak…when it would be easier to be angry and rude…“Truth” is expressed each time I open the door for someone…“Truth” is expressed each time I sit down to eat with friends…“Truth” is expressed each day I wake up and go to work…“Truth” is expressed each First Day in Meeting.

“Salvation” isn’t for “when I die”…“salvation” is for now…in this world. God is good and we are to be the “Images of God” in THIS WORLD…the next world will take care of itself…how we face life is more important than what we believe about the “here after”.

Friend William Penn once said…“He that does good for good’s sake seeks neither paradise nor reward, but he is sure of both in the end.” " He that lives to live forever, never fears dying." " True godliness does not turn men out of the world, but enables them to live better in it and excites their endeavors to mend it"

The things of this world is where we find “Truth”.

Will the body of the wicked be destroyed?

Matt.5
30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Matt.10
28And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Ez.18
20The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Real people enter hell to be destroyed forever. Jesus and Ezekial teach this. Will the devil be in charge of hell?

Ez.28
18Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
19All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

Satan will be burned up with the rest of the wicked. Ezekial teaches this. What’s God’s purpose for hell?

Matt25
41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Rev.20
15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Psalm37
10For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
20But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

God’s purpose is that hell will destroy sin and sinners and make the world safe for sinners. Jesus and David taught this. God doesn’t want it this way.

Ez.33
11Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

Luke 9
56For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.

Ez28
21For the LORD shall rise up as in… that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

God wants everyone to repent and come to Him. If they don’t He has no choice. Jesus and Ezekial teach this. What are God’s post hell plans?

Nahum 1
9What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise
up the second time.

Isaiah 65
17For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

Rev21
3And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

After hellfire goes out God will create a new earth and restore it to His people where sin will never again rise up to afflict His people. This is what the bible teaches Ben.
richard my friend. i can find chapter and verses, that along with these you have provided, give a whole complete picture, that contradict your views. you know i can do this. however what would be the point? the verse slinging will get us nowhere richard. it comes down to authority. your authority is a prophetess that lived in the 1800s who was very likely decieved. my authority that i am bound under is the Christ, and the Church he established. i accept the whole of the gospel. not some watered down version. i accept the bible and the traditions handed down by the apostles. as well as the succession that has come down from them. in short. i believe all that the Catholic Church teaches and professes. anything else falls short of the mark. anything else is incomplete. i will pray that your eyes are opened and that you will see what you left. Peace :signofcross:

Perhaps your failure to come up with another reason for living is from a lack of imagination. Why should salvation of fallen souls be the only valid reason for life?
I’m not sure I understand. I don’t believe I suggested such a thing. The reason for living is that my life is a gift and it is hoped that I live it fully and abundantly. Not, by any means sitting around and waiting for salvation but working towards it with joy in our hearts and love for others.

Is this in contradiction to my words or in agreement with them? I couldn’t agree more. The only thing missing perhaps is how we define “good”. I believe we need the help of the Holy Spirit through His bride the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

The Bible could be part true and part false, also.
Dear Larkin31,

For all of our sakes I hope and pray we are not betting our souls on a document that is part true and part false. If that is the case then the whole thing needs to be abandoned.

No, our Bible is true as it is the inspired word of God. It was given to us to provide a road map on how to live our life. It also tells us what will happen if we don’t live our life according to the Word.

God Bless.

There are plenty of folks who do the same who are certain that there is no reward in heaven. The ultimate goal of salvation and union with God is not, as I thought that you suggested, a necessary requirement for purpose in life. If I misunderstood your comment in this regard, I apologize. I thought, though, that your implication was pretty clear. But perhaps I was mistaken.

Hi Mijoy2,
It is my understanding that we don’t have to work towards salvation, for by the grace of God, it is a free gift to us from God when we have faith in Jesus Christ. Salvation is not of works, as the Jews thought. Jesus taught us what salvation is … (Joh 17:3) And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

I agree that the fruit of salvation produces in our hearts the love for others.

Larkin, I agree with you that salvation is not the purpose of life. We are to be like Jesus. Jesus’ life was not to gain salvation, but to glorify His father. The purpose, of our life is to know God and understand what His character is so that we can love Him and glorify Him. It is to have a meaningful relationship with the Lord.

The blindness in part that happened to Israel was not God’s plan. God wants all people to enter His kingdom. God would not blind any person from knowing Him. Some people of Israel chose to be blind to God’s message.

You stated…" I don’t think He has a plan to hide the truth of Hell from his Church “. You, by the obedience to the Catholic Catechism are assuming that the “church” is that of the Catholic “church”. The " church” is an assembly , or congregation. Acts 7:38 is not the Catholic church that is being mentioned. Therefore, the Catholic church does not have to be “THE” church. Might your church be blinded???

richard my friend. i can find chapter and verses, that along with these you have provided, give a whole complete picture, that contradict your views. you know i can do this. however what would be the point?
The bible vs, that I have provided tell us flat out that there is not a hell burniing now. That the wicked are reserved unto the judgement day, so any vs. that you provide that go “along” with these would prove the same thing. If you are trying to say that you can refute what I am saying and what the bible is saying by using the bible alone, I certainly don’t know this. You have made a couple of weak allusions to scriptures, but you never quote the scriptures or even cite them, so I **don’t **know this.
the verse slinging will get us nowhere richard. it comes down to authority. your authority is a prophetess that lived in the 1800s who was very likely decieved.
The word of God is my one and only authority when it comes to telling me about Jesus and “verse slinging” as you put it is the only way I can communicate that word to you Ben. If I would not “sling verses” it would be just me talking and who am I. It seems to me that whenever you run out of argument you bring up my church and Ellen White. This I see as diversionary and probably done in despiration.
my authority that i am bound under is the Christ, and the Church he established. i accept the whole of the gospel.
Then why don’t you show me in the gospel where Jesus or anyone says that hell is burning now. Surely you can make an exception to your aversion to “verse slinging” to actually verify your argument with scripture.
not some watered down version.
Could you please explain to me how the scriptures I provided are in any way “watered down”?
i accept the bible
Except for the ones that I have provided that show that hellfire is reserved for the judgement day, Right?

If the CC is teaching anything other than what the bible teaches, it is the CC that falls short of the mark.

Gal.1
6I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

no, there has not ever existed a “hell” as has been religiously understood other than as a projection of our fears and pains.

Larkin

I do agree with you, hell does not exist…until the end of the world as read in Revelations.

Can I ask why you think hell does not exist? Secondly, do you believe in any afterlife?

Thank you

I am fully convinced that hell is a fictional mythical and metaphorical projection of our fears of evil and need for a larger sense of final justice for human behavior. We make these projections in nearly all forms of art, and have done so for hundreds of years. These artist metaphors are clearly fictional, and without clear empirical evidence to the contrary (which has never been produced), I see no reason to put religious conceptions of hell into a separate “true” category. In other words, if 99 depictions of hell are clearly fictional, why should the 100th be “true”? You need a pretty darn convincing set of evidence to determine it to be anything other than simply another mythical fictional projection.

:grouphug: hi larkin! how ya been. i am fully convinced also. i am fully convinced that human beings are by nature, bent toward spiritual things. even atheist, though they would deny it. they are more versed in religious matters than most church goin folks. why? if all of these things are fictional, and dont really exist, then why do the atheist and agnostics even care? if there is nothing more than this life, and the spiritual life is nothing but a fair tale, then why are so many non believers so obsessed with these things? they wouldnt go bonkers over alice in wonderland, or moby dick. but they sure go bonkers over a book that they consider fictional, and belief systems they consider irrelevant and outdated. im not placing you in the same class as these larkin, feel free to shed some light on my questions if you would like. id be interested in your answers. Peace 🙂

I for one am not obsessed.

And plenty of persons ARE obsessed over fictional mythical belief systems (see Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek for examples).

What typically energizes atheists into more political activity is the nexus of religion and government. This, you will admit, makes religious mythology more pertinent and more adversarial for the non-believers than, say, the Prime Directive of Star Trek. If courthouses were interested in posting the Prime Directive on their walls, then perhaps atheists might start fighting that, too. 🤷

oh, and I totally agree that human beings have a strong tendency toward the religio-mythical. This is common knowledge of cultural history.

This is a very private question. I would understand if you did not want to reply. You state in your bio. that you are a former Protestant. Could I ask you why the separation ?
