There is music to fit the syllables and there is a stretch of the syllables (and hopefully enough vowel sound, easier to do with Italian) to fit the music. Actually we seldom think about it but some of the Christmas carols we sing (Adeste Fideles, Silent Night, etc.) are translations as well, but we are just conditioned to accept the translations as English’s own, even several verses of them, though musically they’re not ideal. I’m neutral on the new translations as I attend non-English Masses but I would hope that new melodies will be written to accomodate each syllable in non-boring fashion. Actually the Church’s ideal would be Deo Jubilate but that’s another thread. Many music directors are left with so much music that doesn’t fit the new words. I was hoping that this would be the end of the Marty Haugen stuff, but mine is struggling to modify it to fit the new translation.
