Messiah/Christ In Islam

I read the responses Muslim Woman provided, they rely on the Bible for a partial answer. I’m not really sure there is an Islamic source that reveals what Muhammad would have understood the Messiah to mean.

Ibn Kathir, who analyzed the Title linguistically, suggested that the Arabic root of Messiah means to “touch,” and so it refers to Jesus’ power to heal. It is true that the Messiah would possess such powers, but to say this is why Jesus is the Messiah is wrong.

Messiah means Anointed One, and as the Islamic responses note, Kings, Prophets, and Priests were anointed. The Messiah however, would be all three, He would be a King, a Prophet, and a Priest. And there are Messianic prophecies in the OT that reveal the Messiah would be a Divine Savior.

God bless,
Tomasz
The issue is not the etamology of the word, but the common understanding of it’s implication at the time of it’s use. By example, I’m quite sure the present, and unfortunate use of the word “hoe” has nothing to do with it’s origine. That’s my professional field these last twenty years, the social setting (“sits in laben” to be fancy-smancy) of the writing of the Bible. At the time of Jesus, indeed since the exile, Messia would have been understood as nothing other than that decendent of King David, sent and empowered (anointed) specifically by God, to reestablish God’s rightful dominion. And incidendently give the Romans their comeuppings, the Babalonians having faided into history. By example, the Church formally seperated itself from Jeudism in 70 AD when the leaders of the rebellion declaired their general the messiah, an unacceptable transgression of the Christ’s perogative.👍

There is a hadith about the second coming of Jesus. In fact, there are many, authentic ahadith about the second coming of Jesus. That he will be a just ruler, that he will “break the cross” and that he will judge according to the Law of the Qur’an.
this is in your opinion why he is called The messiah?

whenever any Prophet came to his people , it was a must for them to listen to him . All Prophets (pbut) taught us about one God . Jesus (p) also did the same 🙂

He taught that God is greater than all .

Thanks for agreeing to the verses mentioned.

Jesus said, “…I Am the way, the truth and the light. No man comes to the Father except by me”.

So that would exclude any other men or women, alive or dead, or anything else.

Peace Amy,
Islam of course has no problem understanding Jesus to be a King (after second coming), a Prophet, or even a Priest, really.
Jesus was clear His Kingdom is not of this world and that it already exists.

How would Muslims factor in the Messiah being a Priest since such a role doesn’t exist in Islam?

nuh. Your Lord told u about another comforter . During his life time , people were looking for That Prophet . Jesus (p) told his followers that unless he go away , comforter won’t come. It’s the Muhammed (p) who is That Prophet/ Comforter predicted by your Lord .

And the most important matter is neither the Messiah nor the Muhammed (p) is equal to God.

I’m still waiting patiently for the messianic prophecies 🙂
It’s enough for Muslims that Quran mentioned about Jesus (p) as Messiah & he was sent for Jews .

So no Muslim can tell me what Islam says Christ or Messiah means?

Dose that make any sense to anybody?

So you believe Jesus is the Messiah, but when it comes to defining Messiah/Christ, you come up blank?

And even when you say the Messiah is defined as Jesus, you cannot produce the OT prophecies which He had to fulfill in order to be the Jewish Messiah.

And this brings up another question, which I make a new thread for since it isn’t appropriate here.

It’s impossible that the Spirit of Truth is Muhammad, one reason is that He was promised to the Apostles. Since Muhammad wouldn’t be born for another 600 years, it obviously can’t be him.
And the most important matter is neither the Messiah nor the Muhammed (p) is equal to God.
I’m afraid you’re mistaken. There are a number of Messianic prophecies that reveal the Divinity of the Messiah, consider these two as examples:

"For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

Jewish commentators regarded this passage as Messianic and it clearly calls the Messiah,** El-Gibbor**, which means Mighty God.

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times.”
Micah 5:2

The passage reveals the eternal nature of the Messiah.

Jesus fulfilled these prophecies.

to accept Jesus (p) , we don’t have to produce any OT prophecy or depend on OT , NT 🙂

His hearers were outraged. Consider the sits en laben: “I Am” or YHWH is the forbiden sacred name of God, and His audience rightly understood that He was stating the blunt truth that He, Jesus was and is God the Son, who along with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit are coequal. Three distinct persons not to be confused, one substance not to be devided (the Athenesian Creed is the simpliest statement of understanding yet promligated and even it is a positive brain twister). “They” are “One.” This cannot be understood by mortal flesh. It is a physical impossibility, contravening all experience of the flesh. But is anything impossible for God? What is flesh must die. And what is spirit must live. Those who accept the limitations of their understanding through reason in the flesh, swollow their pride, accept, confess, and obey shall live forever in the presence of God. That is heaven. Those who do not will live forever, completely and totally apart from God. Mortal life is near the presence of God. Life totally apart from the presence will be Hell indeed, and there is no escape, forever. I confess that this is where I stop being a scientist and become a man of faith. But then who but a man of science, logic and reason is better qualified to recognize the limitations of science, logic, and reason? I began my working life very successfully in the physical sciences. When I realized that understanding based upon preceived human experience was limited and could not take me where I longed to go, I brought my skills into service of the Church. As the Preacher says in opening the Book “Eccleasties:” “Futile, futile, all is futility and chaseing after wind.” (My translation from the Hebrew) I pray that you too will overcome pride and come to know joy. When faith is achieved, the universe explodes!👍

I beg to differ. Everything about Jesus was prophesied: Born of a vergin, in Bethleham, of the house and lineage of David, called out of Egypt, shall I go on? Even in the crusifiction: Numbered among thieves, they cast lots for his garment, not a bone of his was broken, his side was pearced. Indeed, the Gospelers specifically, repeatedly noted: “This was done to fulfill the prophecy.” But those things I mention above could not have been contrived; if that accuseation be raised. Those who have ears; let them hear. Those who have eyes; let them see. Forgive me. My selection of monikar, borrowed from Eccleasties, has a double meaning.👍

Sister Amy,
What I want is an understanding within the context of Islam as to what the Messiah is and what is role is. Muslims, Christians, and Jews all agree that it means annointed. To be annoiinted means that you are annointed for a specific job.

What is the specific job that Isa is annointed for in Islam? Or is he simply “the Annointed?” If Jesus is the Messiah, even if we use a definition that does not include his Divinity, how can you reconcile the fact that the title makes him the last prophet?

Or do we scrap the Jewish/CHristian concept and just accept it as his title?
Ralph, one meaning of Masih is a traveller. Long distance traveller. That is by Arabic. But we need not take any new meaning of Masih. The good old meaning of the word Masih (Messiah) taken by the Jews should be good enough. So please tell what the Jews understand about the word Masih or Messiah?
Forget the meaning taken by the Muslims and christians.

It’s pointless, man. Muslim Woman only accepts the Jesus of the Koran.

For get the meaning taken by the Muslims and christians.
The Jews hold that Messiah means annointed. He is the heir to the throne of David, he will restore Isreal, he will show all the world of the Power of God’s love for his people by leading Isreal into a new era of peace and prosperity. All nations shall know that God is a powerful God and that he has not forgotten those with whom he has entered into a convenant. He will keep the law of Moses perfectly. He will be without blaim or blemish

How does that fit into Islam?

Eucharisted, there is no harm in preahing the gospel and bible to the Muslims peacefully. May be we will learn something good. At least it will tell us about the beliefs of the christians and why they have those beliefs. i.e. the basis of their beliefs.

We are at liberty to accept or reject what is being told to us. But preaching to us is no harm to us…

The story is told of three missionaries who were sent into the then unexplored (by Europeans) depths of Africa. After five years they sent a letter back to their Order: “We have failed. Not one convert. Request permission to return home.” Two years later the reply arrived: “Permission denied. You were sent to be faithful, not successful.”👍

I do not find any trouble with the above definitions. We Muslims also believe the same. Jesus had come for the Jews only and they would have got everything if the Jews had listened to him and recognised him. But I may think over it again. My reply is premature, too quick.
