Guys, I’ve been as guilty of choosing from the menu aswell. No one is ammune from it. The difference is I call myself on it. You folks seem to think its ok to justify paying peanuts and be at one with Church teaching…
There you go again…

.

I always find out curious that legislators feel the best way to increase employment is to make it more expensive to hire people

In other words, you cannot address any of the concerns, other than name calling, one may have about the economics or realities of raising the minimum wage.

I don’t believe Catholics have to produce a detailed economic explanation of why they support there own bishops.

You are absolutely correct. However, if you are trying to convince someone that your argument is right, then it would be more persuasive to provide some logic and facts to support your argument.

Again, should the 17 year old HS student who is living at home, saving for college, has the same “living wage” requirement as a single mom with 4 kids?

Isn’t it “social justice” to pay the same for equal work? The laws in western nations also agree with this as you can’t discriminate on age, gender, family status and so on.
There should be wage equality…

What does that even mean? Did St. Joseph only work 40 hrs a week? Are priests priests only 40 hrs a week?

You are a unionized government worker. Of course you oppose working more than 37 hrs a week while calling for more money.

Peace

Tim
Work /life balance is a progressive and humane theory that is beneficial for the worker himself and his family.

But please try and argue against it.

I am proud of my Union membership and am also proud of the quality of work I do on a daily basis…

Cafeteria Catholicism really is strong in the American Right as is shown here with the flagrant disregard for the Social Justice doctrines of Mother Church…
I don’t find the vast majority of topics brought up on this forum very interesting, but there are a few issues that I take a strong stand on… and the insistence that specific solutions to political issues are to be found in the social justice teachings of the church is one of them.

There is nothing whatsoever in any church teaching that obliges one to support an increase in the minimum wage.

That the comments from Bishop Wenski suggest such an obligation exists is all one needs to know to recognize that the good bishop has done us a disservice by interjecting his political opinions into the discussion. The primary effect of his comments is to provide justification for others like yourself to insult those whose politics are different than your own. All in all that is probably not the effect he was intending.

It will have another effect-it will give Democrat Catholics another rationalization for rejecting church teaching on not supporting abortion They will claim that based
on this bishops statement there is a moral equivalence between supporting abortion and opposing a minimum wage increase and THEREFORE Catholics can vote for candidates who support an increase but also support unrestricted abortion on demand.

While this may be a potential effect, it certainly is not enough of a reason for him to refrain from expressing his opinion on the issue.

Thank you, Ender.

So you support exploiting workers and enslaving them to work 3 jobs in order to satisfy the rabid greed of the ‘Market’.

I, and many Catholics, do not…

Equivalence probably won’t be claimed because of the minimum wage but as the bishops (and especially the USCCB) offer opinions on nearly every political issue, they surely enable those who, while opposing abortion, still support Democrat positions on most issues. This is in fact a rather common argument. That it is an effective one can be seen from the fact that half of all Catholics supported our current president.

This is just not true.

Church teaching insists we respect the worker and oppose killing unborn babies. I adhere to both, do you…?

Did you actually read what I wrote? I’m pretty sure there wasn’t anything there expressing support for the exploitation and enslavement of workers. I’ll try again:

There is nothing in any church document that requires support for an increase in the minimum wage.

The way to disprove my statement is as simple as it is obvious: provide a citation from any church document that refutes it. I realize that might require some effort on your part but if you truly believe I am wrong then you ought to be willing to educate me and everyone else on this forum who might agree with me.

So you don’t advocate for exploiting workers? Great. you’re halfway to Social Justice enlightenment already…😉

Now, where do you see the fairness in a worker keeping down 3 jobs to stay above water…?
