In addition, the state should not be rewarding out of wedlock children. In the short term one may think it will hurt children, but tough medicine to treat the sick patient is necessary. In the long run, it will help children.
Tough medicine will help the children? Undernourished, ill, lacking basic shelter needs? Why punish the children for their parents’ sins? IMO, not the best Catholic response to the problem.

The big problem I have with this is that it just feeds the myth that people are only poor and destitute because they’re lazy. Do people abuse the system? I’m sure some do but doesn’t mean everyone or even a large percentage do. To constantly blanket the poor and needy as lazy like this just feeds the stereotype and should be stopped, especially since many people that are currently unemployed are only in that situation because of a crashed economy in the first place.

Why punish the people that work hard and pay their taxes? Why take the food out their children’s mouth?

So that means those who began benefits in 2007 are no longer eligible. Are there any statistics on what has become of them?
If I understand it correctly this law restricts peole to 48 months throughout their entire lives, not just 48 consecutive months.

You’re going to have to explain to me how “hard working” people are punished from the existance of social safety nets. That’s pretty rediculous to be honest.

Get real Rich. “Crack” mothers are not spending our tax dollars on their kids. The kids are still undernourished and ill attended. One only has to look at the abuses of food stamps to see what is going on. The reality is additional surveillance programs are needed, (costing us more) but those that will abuse find ways to do so.

The Catholic response is family needs to be responsible for family.

The problem is the safety nets have turned into permanent means of support. It has already been mentioned that the disabled, those caring for disabled, and others would be excepted.

No - chronic welfare abuse is now systemic and generational.

This country has many working poor. Don’t insult those that are really trying. Work raises self esteem. Work should be the goal.

Interesting.

Without the welfare how are they faring? Does anyone know?

There’s not a reason in the world for a child in this country to go hungry or shelterless. If it’s the parents’ fault, they should be taken away from the parents. Irresponsible parents should not benefit from programs for children.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday signed into law a stricter, four-year lifetime limit on cash welfare benefits, prompting advocates for the poor to warn that tens of thousands of residents will find themselves without cash assistance on Oct. 1.
Michigan’s first-year Republican chief executive said the state will offer exemptions to the limit for those with a disability who can’t work, those who care for a disabled spouse or child and those who are 65 or older and don’t qualify for Social Security benefits or receive very low benefits.

Some recipients who are the victims of domestic violence also may be temporarily exempted.

The Man upstairs says, “If a man can work but doesn’t,then neither should he eat.”
I certainly hope that the governor of Michigan has budgeted monies for more corrections officers and prisons; they’ll need it.

Because people riot when their God given right to welfare taken away?
You mean decent people will turn to crime? There is no reason for anyone to go without food, clothing, or shelter in this country.

At one point in my life, I was looking to buy a two family flat an live in one unit. I was shocked by the garbage bags full of clothes lying all over the place.

The same when we did “Secret Santa” and went to homes on Christmas morning delivering gifts.

The same when I worked with my son’s high school delivering Thanksgiving dinner. Clothes everywhere.

Nowhere did I say decent people.
Well, I keep hearing the crime rate is up due to the bad economy. I don’t believe that people in this country turn to robbing banks because they lost their jobs.

I would think some CAF posters would be pushing for 12 month limits on welfare, or maybe 6 months, heck maybe 2 weeks. The poor do need to learn good ole’ hard right? 🤷

Good old fashioned workhouses might be in order. . . . Hmmm. . . .

That’s a rather uncharitable characterization of the CAF posters. You’ve seen no evidence suggesting that. Most of us here donate time and money to charities.

What many of us here are objecting to is the FEDERAL government’s involvement in “charity.”

Do you know that my company has to pay interest to the federal government on the unemployment benefits my state gives out because the federal government forced us to extend the benefits?

4 years is a long, long time. I know of families that are in the 5th generation of being on welfare. It becomes a way of life. The big losers? The taxpayers. The bigger losers? The welfare recipients themselves.

Those people didn’t have jobs to begin with.
