Migrants from Europe bringing girls to tolerant Britain for genital mutilation

The UK has a reputation for being so tolerant of female genital mutilation (FGM) that parents from some African communities in mainland Europe are bringing their daughters to Britain solely to have them cut – “sometimes during group sessions” – BBC’s Newsnight discovered. While the penalties are tough in France – more than 100 people have been convicted there, serving prison sentences of up to 13 years – Britain has never carried out a single prosecution for FGM.
That is despite its being made illegal in the 1980s and 82 cases being reported to the Metropolitan Police in recent years, according to Commander Simon Foy, who runs the Child Abuse Investigation Command. He said he was “not necessarily sure that the availability of a stronger sense of prosecution will change it [the incidence of FGM] for the better”.
“In England you are very respectful about traditions of every community who live in your country,” [Isabelle Gillette-Faye] said. “In our country it is totally different, because when migrants arrive in France they have a necessity to integrate with our law and traditions. We will not tolerate the mutilation of children.”

Hidden world of female genital mutilation in the UK

Oh I’m so thankful I live in the UK…NOT!

Thank God I’m an American. 🙂

So by “migrants”, they mean Muslims. Let’s not ignore the elephant in the room. It’s not because they’re “African” that they’re doing these things, but because of what Islam teaches and what it contributes to their Islamic culture. They just happen to be African Muslims. African Christians do not do this. If there were any Jews left in Africa, had they not all been slaughtered or forcibly converted by Mohammedan armies 1400 years ago, they’d not do it either.

This is like when you hear about “Asian” rape gangs. As if Sikhs or Hindus were doing this stuff. What an insult!

Actually it’s both. It’s not a coincidence that most Islamic groups have denounced the practice yet it continues to flourish in Africa. Yes, religion is a part of it, but so are the sociopolitical factors in Africa that enable and even encourage things like this. The poverty, lack of education, subjugation of women, lack of a fair and well maintained government all play a big role in why people still believe in and participate in these things.

You’re right, BlueEyedLady. It is more of an African (sub-Saharan) practice to the best of my knowledge.

Female genital mutilation does happen in the US, but the more common practice is to send the girl back to Africa to have the procedure done.
Occurrences of the practice have been documented in the U.S. In March, a Georgia mother was charged with female genital mutilation after the father noticed an infant’s genitals “appeared to be have been circumcised,” according to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office. Officers wouldn’t comment further on the family.
Several advocacy workers say the more common scenario involves sending girls back to their home country to have the ritual performed. Over the past few years, Taina Bien-Aimé, president of the women’s advocacy group Equality Now, has heard several anecdotal stories of girls being sent back to have the procedure.
With summer vacation approaching, one 34-year-old mother from Senegal, living in New York City, says she knows several African families in limbo about genital cutting. One of her female friends abandoned her husband earlier this year when he asked for their 6-year-old daughter to be cut in Africa this summer. The friend, who speaks little English and is jobless, fled to a shelter with her daughter.

True, but it’s an **Islamic **practise in Africa. Islam the socio-political-economic-religious world-view has precedents for female genital mutilation, and Muslim groups in the UK support it. The culture was influenced by the religion. Also, it’s offensive to non-Muslim Africans to label it “African” when it’s not limited to Africa, nor is it influenced simply by geopolitical factors. If you remove the Islamic support and historical precedent, it wouldn’t exist.
I’m very happy for you but just so you know, this kind of comment is pretty disrespectful and a bit stupid.
Indeed. I could always say “thank God I’m *not *an American.”

Anyway, I am disheartened beyond belief to see what is happening to the UK these days. The nation is in decline, thanks to aggressive anti-Western multiculturalism, moral relativism, and excessive hedonism. Such a great nation that gave so much to the world, with all its history, laws and culture – it’s now becoming a squatters colony for those who would seek to destroy it.

It’s disrespectful because I’m thankful I don’t live in the UK and I’m an American and I want to express it in a humorous sarcastic way…oh and it’s stupid.

Well all I can say is thank you for your charity. and a raspberry blow for you 😉

From my understanding genital mutilation is not specifically an islamic practice, but African.

When I was at University a friend of mine from Sierra Leona, who was a Catholic told me his Catholic wife had been “circumcised” as a child, and that it was common in western Africa.

It’s a dilemma. Given that some parents are determined to have it done to their daughters, as otherwise, they are not considered clean and marriagable. whether to turn a blind eye to girls being sent abroad, or to do it in the UK, where at least there will be anaesthesia and clean knives, rather than standing in a cold river then a razor-blade.

A genuine dilemma. And before anyone jumps in with comments on the NHS, it’s my understanding that it would be done in a private clinic. No involvement by the NHS at all, apart from treating girls when the procedure goes wrong.

It is apparent from the widespread practice of female circumcision that it is not an accidental occurrence originating in any one place or confined to any one religion or belief.
Various authors have shown that it was known to the ancient Egyptians, Romans and Arabs. Circumcision was referred to by Aramais in Egypt during the second century B.C. In a Greek papyrus dated l63. B.C., it is- described as an operation performed in Memphis at the age when women received their dowries. — In some groups, circumcision was a mark of distinction,in others9 a mark of subjugation. There seems to be no doubt that the rite was first performed on males.
