Nobody said a word about manifest destiny and the Church has never condemend yhe proposition that Amercia is excpetional

Now back to the topic at hand. Abortion is the greatest issue facing the country today and the Democrat Party is the greatest obstacle to ending it.
Well said and nice segue back to the topic at hand. 🙂

Read my post, then try again. You seem to have missed the following statement I made:

I agree that the USA has no right to push its norms on other nations.

Perhaps, if our help is requested.

Sloganeering. 🤷
Sometimes people are being oppressed and killed and cannot call out for help.

Jesus Himself said that His followers are to be the light of the world, and the USA remains mainly a Christian nation…we should be that light or beacon. It is NOT a slogan, it comes from Christ = God!

Even if they cry out, it is not our obligation to interfere in another nation’s internal affairs if it has no direct impact on us.

His followers, not some nation that didn’t exist for 17 centuries after His death.

As Christians we cannot just sit by and watch people be slaughtered. What form of government each nation has is up to them, how they want to live, how they make decisions, etc…that is all up to them. But, when people are being slaughtered who are true innocents and they are being killed on purpose, that is something Christians are called to help with. It is no different than the fact that we are called to help starving and needy people.

This is a Christian nation…so it applies to the USA even if it were 100 centuries later.

Nations tend not to intervene into the internal affairs of another nation, even a bad one, unless those internal affairs seriously affect the nation considering intervention.
Curiously enough, Rich, I believe this is a true conservative philosophy, or used to be before the era of the neo-conservatives (like Rove and Bush) and their imperialism.

(This really isn’t off topic - I just need to think a bit to connect the dots) 🙂

Or perhaps you are just confusing the Christian virtue of patriotism with something else.
America is on the whole a progressive state but it has no right to go around the world attempting to make everyone else conform to it’s norms. Such a view or goal would be massively arrogant.
Actually, I agree with this; in fact a book was written on the subject called “Day of Reckoning – How Hubris, Ideology and Greed are Tearing America Apart.” The book was written by a Catholic conservative who, unlike Mike Huckabee, has proven his 100% pro-life stance.

Not every American accepts “American exceptionalism,” which is based on a Calvinist view of the world.
Well, that’s just not true. American exceptionalism comes from the fact that it is the first (and currently the biggest) liberal democratic republic in the world. Agree or disagree, but it’s hardly Calvinist?
Edit: despite the fact that early american Calvinists believed America would be the beacon of prosperity to lead to the coming of Christ.

Calvinist in that it connects the U.S. with prosperity and success because it is one of the Elect. Not just my opinion. Look it up and the connection is there.

Not curious at all. I think you are right. Non-intervention in the affairs of other countries was a conservative value at one time.

If you read the edit of my post you would see I conceded that. But you and I both know that American Exceptionalism came out of things other than Calvinism too. As I see it, the US is exceptional in the way ancient Athens and Sparta were in bringing ideas of liberty, which were then improved upon by Rome, through England and ultimately Britain and then finally to the US, the first liberal democracy in the world. America might not be exceptional anymore, but it certainly was.

So they can have their own way of life until they do something we don’t like, then it’s time to send in the Marines, eh?

What about nations who had a democratic way of life only to have a dictator forced on them and slaughtering people.

As the U.S. as one in a progression of “improvements” in the understanding of liberty, I can agree with you.

I’d still hold off sending in our Army. We are NOT the world’s cop!

Unless it had a direct impact on our country affecting our vital national interests.

So would you also like an end to all foreign aid from the US? I can certainly understand your point of view, indeed on this forum last year I was making statements like that. Because of this I know we are likely not to reach agreement whatsoever.

Foreign aid is fine, but it doesn’t have to include an Army division along with the money and other things! 🙂

So you’re happy with financially helping other nations, but not helping nations in most need of help - those being slaughtered by their own leaders?

Financially helping a nation is helping the government of that nation, and if we decide not to help it any more, we can stop financial aid. We have provided foreign aid to some really bad actors in the past as well as to the more deserving.

But, as for helping the populace being suppressed or slaughtered - what did we do when Saddam gassed his citizens or what did we do about Cambodia?

Even conservatives didn’t suggest that we go to war in Cambodia to stop the slaughters then, and we didn’t go to war with Iraq over the killing of its citizens.
