Mike Rowe's letter to fan regarding COVID

However, given current numbers of infections and deaths, it appears that the Doctor was possibly in the ball park as to danger of death risk…
The risk of death due to Islamic terrorism in air travel is much much lower than the risk of dying from covid-19. Yet for nearly two decades we have endured tremendous inconvenience at airport security when we travel by air just to avoid that one extremely rare event. So since the risk from covid-19 is much higher than the risk of a terrorist airline disaster, you would think we would be willing to endure a correspondingly greater inconvenience to avert such death.

If Mike Rowe actually played a doctor on tv, I might be more willing to give him a listen.

That might require at least a minimum of training in critical thought, something that is not widely taught.

Not to take the thread off topic, but the last two months would seem to indicate that rational thought has been replaced with metooisms driven by pure emotion. I suspect the same is driving risky conduct in regards to the virus.

On second thought…

PAZIENZA, my fellow citizens, PAZIENZA. That is the key to saving lives and reopening the economy.
The problem with this is that many businesses can’t afford “PAZIENZA.” If they don’t have any money coming in, they go bankrupt, and that means jobs lost , despair, and destitution. The government has made some attempts to help people out, but they can’t continue paying the salaries of all the people who lose their businesses and their incomes.

My daughter told me last night that in the last weeks, 2 of her friends have committed suicide, in all likelihood because they were at the end of their financial and emotional ropes, and saw themselves as totally out of options after losing their jobs.

It seems to me that this should be a PRIORITY of churches everywhere–organizing suicide watches and offering practical help to those who can’t see any way out of their misery. Being alone and isolated makes it all so much worse.

I love the commercial that has been airing on television for the last couple of days–“AWKWARD!” With humor, but totally seriousness, the ad urges us to “speak up” and get past the awkwardness and ASK our friends, family members, co-workers, acquaintances, etc. if they are alright if they start manifesting personality traits that seem out-of-character, dark moods, sadness, bitterness, etc.

I think this is a wonderful idea, and I plan to be more aware of others around me and ASK them if they’re OK, and if they say they aren’t, I’ll try to help them find help for their issues.

Pandemic 2020: Layoff-related deaths exceed covid-19 deaths by 41%

Vaughn Cordle, CFA / April 23, 2020 (updated May 3, 2020) Our most recent research is on nursing homes, hospices, and hospitals with a NY focus. Covid deaths are exaggerated because of how they are reported and many are reported as covid deaths…

The pandemic could have been handled better, that’s for sure. In my opinion, the lockdown and slowdown were necessary, and still are, but would have taken much less of a toll on the economy and mental health if Americans had a better sense of common purpose. We did not come together as we needed to. United we stand. Divided we fall.

Syringe still full… Poor guy must have passed out just from the sight of the needle. It’s a big one.

The Walmarts in my area are enforcing the mask rules, as far as I can tell. I haven’t seen people in there without a mask, and I go once a week for groceries.

On the other hand, I was in a home improvement store locally, and they were letting numerous people come in without masks. But the other ones of the same chain were not, as far as I could notice, so I just started going to the ones that enforced. Maybe if more people did that, maybe more stores would enforce the mask rules.

And it certainly didn’t help that an African American man was murdered by a policeman, and the BLM movement decided to launch an all-out attack on the United States with their violent protests.

Not exactly a good way to bring about national unity–terrorizing innocent people who are already afraid of catching a fatal case of COVID-19 and living in a surreal world of sheltering in place and wearing protective gear.

Out city is in trouble as of yesterday, as the protesters have vowed that “we will not have peace in our city until their demands are met.” I am afraid, I’ll admit it. I wish we could move away from here. I am praying for our city’s elected leaders, about half of whom are black, and who have made wise decisions that sadly have infuriated the protesters and BLM. I hope that they will be safe in the coming weeks.

It also doesn’t help that our young people are not in school, which is a place where unity is part of their culture. I’m guessing many of them feel very alone, in spite of the availability of social media. A 2-inch screen or a TV screen just isn’t the same as face-to-face contact.

Open businesses and full employment help the economy and mental health.
No, not if it leads to full hospitals and graveyards.

In the southern US, didn’t they try opening businesses and resuming activities? With mixed success, I might add. The virus doesn’t respect capitalism.

Does the virus respect rioters and protesters clustered together? Leftists don’t seem to have any problem with riots and protests as it relates to the spread.
The left’s inconsistency makes it appear as if the left prefers chaos, whether it’s in the form of riots or closed businesses.

Why are you bringing that up, as if there is any equivalence between a small number (thousands?) of protesters and many millions of workers and shoppers? Apples and oranges.

But to answer your question, of course the virus doesn’t respect riots or protests.

The left and leftists, you say. This has nothing to do with left or right. It shouldn’t be about the politics of division. That’s what my earlier post hinted at. If we worked together, we would all be better off.

Such a large figure must include every little town, like my own, that had a one-time peaceful demonstration with face masks and some attention to personal distance. Big deal.

What do CAF members think of this video that Mike Rowe did for PragerU several years back?
