Sure it’s on public streets. So what? They are closed for the day just like the local Catholic church has a street closed for its annual fair. The church gets police protection, municipal workers block the street, and taxpayers foot the bill. The pope comes to town and half the police force of New York is deployed.

It’s simple. If you don’t like Catholics or the pope, then stay away when they have a permit to close a street for a fair or parade down broadway in the popemobile. It goes both ways. Just like using the TV clicker.
Good advice.

But oddly enough, by some strange quirk in the Constitution, I also have the right to freedom of speech. Is there a law that says I can’t complain to Miller about what they are sponsoring?

Is there a law that says I have to buy their products?

You’re assuming that the city of San Francisco allows the same street closures and police protection for churches that they allow public displays of pornography, which is a pretty big assumption.

Keep in mind that the group involved in this event has been given street closure permits in the past, and used them to do gross displays mocking Christians. Do you think the SF board would allow the same permits for a festival that mocked and promoted hatred of gay people? Not a chance.

Most likley to show how discusting and vile this event is…

I question why you see the reason to link this…without a warning I might add…
Then you failed to read the WARNING on the page when YOU clicked it.

That’s not a strange quirk in the constitution. It’s the First Amendment. I am not aware of any law that says you can’t complain. In fact, you can probably get a city permit to hold a rally to complain. Then I’d advise the pierced people in chains, leather, and jeweled jock straps to avoid your rally, camp on the couch, and play with the clicker.

I am not aware of any law mandating you purchase beer or any other product. Are you?

I wonder if the city of San Francisco would give a parade permit to the Mummers, if they marched in blackface?

Or is there a limit to freedom of expression?

I am assumimg SF grants permits to churches. Is that wrong? I don’t live there. But I have lived in enough places that I do know it’s common for all kinds of groups to get permits for marches, rallies, and fairs. Look at the Capital Mall in Washington. It’s a revolving door of interest groups, all with police protection.

Now, if the pope came to SF, I guess I’d say he would have police protection as the popemobile motored down the streets. Maybe SF is an exception, but I doubt it. I remember when the pope stopped in Anchorage in the early Eighties. He took over a huge city park, replete with municipal workers and cops. Everything was a smashing success. The Wiccans stayed away mumbling to their toadstools in the forest.

I can’t speak for the SF board, but Fred Phelps seems to do OK. He even gets police protection as he drags his bullhorns and ragged band of faithful around the country.

So, can anyone tell us if thee have ben any religiously inspired demonstrations in SF critical of homosexuality?

I don’t know. But I do know the KKK gets permits in various cities. I suppose the only way we will get the answers to the SF permitting quetsion is when some stalwart applies for a Famly Values parade in SF.

The answer would actually come from the courts as the organizers of the proposed demonstration appealed a denial.

I’m not complaining. What makes you think I am? But, even if I was, I think we have established there is no law against that.

Your beer purchasing habits are not at all offensive to me. After all, you’ve never bought me a beer.

But it would be okay with you if they didn’t give a permit to a parade that involved marchers in blackface?

OK with me? Of course not. I would support a permit. Wouldn’t you?
I don’t run San Francisco. But I know Philadelphia will not give the Mummers a permit if they allow blackface.

All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.😃

I realize you don’t run SF. But would you support the issuance of the permit?

I would, yes – but I’d be overruled.😃
Glad to hear you support a permit for the black facers. That’s how we support one another and ensure the stength of that “strange quirk in the Constitution.”

Would anyone here deny a permit for the black-facers? Why? Who else should be denied a permit*?
  • permit presumes a peaceful activity that does not violate any other laws.

Because all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others, of course.😛

The right of peaceable assembly is an enumerated right.

I noticed the Catholic League is rightly speaking out against the travesty in San Francisco, but I haven’t heard anything from the local bishop in that area. Have you ??

They may have “pulled the ad” after receiving the complaints, but:
  1. Why did they run the ad in the first place?
  2. Are they still sponsoring this Sodom Fest?

They ran the ad in an effort to sell more beer.

So, under that enumerated right, should the Folsom Street Fair get a permit, too?
