I was reading the news today, and I’m seeing so much about the riots protesting police brutality towards people of color in Minneapolis after the death of George Floyd. I know for certain they burnt down a Walmart, looted and vandalized a Target grocery store, destroyed a police precinct, and that’s just the stuff I know of. What are your thoughts on this? Are they justified in their destruction because it’s for a good cause?

Destroying other people’s property, rioting, looting, and assaulting people is never for a good cause. This appears to me to be opportunistic anarchy. If you want to march to bring attention to an injustice, I am glad to stand by your side, provided the facts are clear and support your position. If you want to steal big screen TVs from Target and Walmart, and burn an Autozone and a Police precinct to the ground, you are just as bad as the brutality you are allegedly protesting against.

No being black, and not having to worry about my sons or grandsons being seen as threatening, leaves me only to think, I am in no position to judge reactions.

You’d have to be insane to think that looting can be done for a good cause.

Welcome to the forums, artpop. May I ask, are you Catholic yourself, and what’s your interest in seeking the Catholic perspective on this? It might help us to frame better responses and also understand why you would ask a question on this forum like “are they justified in their destruction” which seems like a bit of a silly question; no one is going to advocate destruction in here, because two wrongs don’t make a right.

I don’t support rioting, and I doubt anyone else here does as well.

Edit: Looks like I was wrong.

The “I don’t judge because I’m not black” does not make sense when the riots are not an exclusively black-phenomenon.

Anyway, whether they are or not, nobody can destroy property and businesses of innocent people and not expect to get judged.

I been patiently waiting for this thread. Ty.

This, right here. Have a cookie and a day off. This person gets it.

People complained about kneeling during an anthem. Where do you think this leaves black communities when another gets gunned down or choked too death?

Don’t want too deal with the riots stop ignoring the problem.
I don’t want too see riots but people have been driven too madness. Don’t expect civil disobedience to be civil if you rob people of their dignity.

I’m a new Catholic, but so many of my friends aren’t. Almost all of them are in complete support of the riots. They believe that the use of violence is justified because unless violence and serious measures are taking, their cause won’t get noticed. I’m interested in the Catholic opinion because of its structured moral ideology with definitive right and wrong, opposed to the random, often fluid morals of my liberal friends.

There are a lot of Catholics out there, including clergy, who absolutely support non-violent protests and even civil disobedience. They do not support committing violence on others or willfully damaging the property of others, at least not if they’re following Catholic teaching. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are Catholics directly involved in the protests.

I can’t say it any better than MLK did oh so many long years ago…

“A riot is the language of the unheard…”

These people do release that, by destroying businesses, they are putting locals out of work and making it more likely that those companies don’t reopen there and less likely for other businesses to invest in those communities. This harms the very communities the folks who are for this violence claim to support.

Are you confusing protests with crimes? Hopefully, many Catholics are directly involved with, or at least support “protests”, but to lump protest into looting might be unfair and questionable.

If you read my entire post and don’t pull one sentence out of context, it is clear what I meant, and there is no need for debate. It is also not news that some Catholics are heavily involved in community matters, social justice, and nonviolent resistance. And of course, other Catholics are not.
