There are a lot of Catholics out there, including clergy, who absolutely support non-violent protests and even civil disobedience.
In fact, a number of Catholic priests and Sisters marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Alabama.
Non-violent protests, and civil disobedience are far more effective than protesting violent, criminal activity with new violent, criminal activity.

An eye for an eye makes the whole country blind (Ghandi),

Protesters protest. Protesting is protected by the Constitution.

A protest is not a riot. A protest is not looting. Rioting and looting are against the law. It sometimes happens that those who want to commit the crimes of rioting and looting try to hide behind lawful protesters.

Perhaps I should clarify my position since that seems to be an argument happening in this thread. I support the protester’s right to protest (and agree with them for the most part, but I’m not involved enough in American politics to have an opinion on what is happening), but I am staunchly against the rioting and aggressive measures that have been happening in Minneapolis. I hold the opinion that violence and extreme aggression, unless in defense, is never justifiable.

That’s all I can really say on the issue. Like I said, I’m not very involved in American politics.

So they should stop abusing racial minorities.
Police should be better then they are.
People shouldn’t have criticized knelling during anthems.

Now here we are.

Dcn. Christopher,

I don’t think you’re going to have much success convincing Black Americans of that. Honestly, and with all due respect, and without advocating physical violence, there is little reason for Black Americans to have any faith that non-violent protests will bring an end to racial oppression.

First, of all, I am not seeing any actual evidence of racial oppression specifically, or racism generally, in this incident. I am not ruling out this possibility, but to allege that this is an incident of racism you are going to have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that this was primarily motivated because of the victim’s status as a black man, rather than this was just a bad cop using excessive force. The data regarding the use of violence by cops does not support a conclusion of racial motivation as all races are subject to excessive force in relatively equal numbers when you control for factors such as demographics, and other factors leading up to the incident. And if you want to say this is due to systemic racial oppression, you are going to need to point to a law or policy designed to purposefully inflict different outcomes based on race. I am not seeing that here. Second, whether we think that someone will be convinced by a truth is irrelevant. The truth is the truth whether someone believes it or not. If someone sinfully decides to engage in violence, against God’s command by the way, that is on them.

This maniac cop should suffer the strictest penalty available. . . . Now do you see what you caused? . . . All the violence. All the division. All the demagogues and media types exploiting the situation.

The rioters and arsonists and looters should also be arrested. Peaceful protest yes. Violence no.

Over and out. I’m offline now until sometime mid to late next week. God bless.

There is a big problem in society when people are filming the murder of a man, imploring those involved in the killing to stop, because the victim can be clearly seen in great distress and struggling for his life, and not be able to step in and save that man because the perpertrator holds weapons he will use , or his partner will use on those attempting to intervene, and those perpetrators are meant to be the law, the ones who prevent and stop and defuse situations like this murder.

The Officer involved has now been charged, his partner and the other officers also should be charged.

This problem needs to be addressed
In what other circumstances on the street or anywhere , would people have to just stand by and watch a man being murdered like that.

What if bystanders had intervened,

Get all white cops out of black areas. Only have black cops in black areas. How hard can it be?
Having once defended a black cop killer who killed a black cop, i doubt that’s going to solve the problem. Also, many if not most areas these days are racially mixed to some degree. A certain famous rap band whose name might not be okay for this forum once gave their musical opinion on what happens when the teams of police are racially diverse, not in a positive way.

Minneapolis is one of the most politically-liberal cities in the United States? Home of Prairie Home Companion, and Garrison Keillor, and his like.

If there are racists there, there surely aren’t very many of them, and they won’t have a lot of support for any of their viewpoints or actions. I can’t imagine the police force welcoming or keeping someone who is overtly racist.

Of course these murdering officers were racist! The one who kneeled on George Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes had 17 formal complaints made against him in the past 19 years. One incident involved him shooting a black man in the stomach, who thankfully survived.

Do you really imagine that an unarmed white man would be taken out from his car and murdered on the street for forging a check or using a fake $20 note (not clear what the alleged crime was yet)?

Really? That’s awful!

I have not heard any of the journalists report this I listen to NBC and ABC BTW, and I don’t have cable, so no FOX or any other conservative news outlet. This forum is the most conservative “news” that I get.

I see from googling the officer’s name that there have been news releases from NBC, but I don’t listen to the news during the day (while I’m working), so I have missed this.

I’m still fairly certain, though, that Minneapolis is a stronghold for liberal politics and liberal thought. It’s hard to see how this officer managed to keep his job with so many complaints against him. Bad judgement, I guess. Or perhaps they are so short-staffed that they made concessions for him, which in retrospect, they hopefully now regret.

Don’t expect civil disobedience to be civil if you rob people of their dignity.
I refuse to believe that either white people or black people, or any people, are incapable of civility, or that they lack dignity. I tell you who gets it.

“The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Martin Luther King, R.

It’ll be even more fun tonight. We just got the coroner’s report. From what the radio said, asphyxiation wasn’t listed as cause of death. Pre-existing heart condition mixed with intoxicants.
