Somehow, you deride his speech, and most of the convention, claim it isn’t going to have much effect the night he gives his speesh, and yet, pretend the 5 point bounce is less than you expected.
Please, save us from your honest analysis man.
I don’t recall deriding his speech…in fact I think I said it was adequate…most acceptance speeches are precisely that. Regarding the convention…I have definitely seen more enthusiasm, but I was highly impressed with Ms. Rice and Mr. Ryan.

Regarding your last point, please take your own advice.

John

Ryan is undeniably a bright guy. That being said, he comes from a relatively small state, is not nearly as well known as Ms. Rice, and has some political baggage that will definitely be exploited.

As you said, we’ll have to see how it turns out.

John
Rice wasn’t picked because she is pro-abortion

I suppose Romney had to make a tough political calculation. We’ll see how it all turns out; but I think he might have garnered more independent voters, as well as women and minorities, if he had chosen Condi Rice. Of course, he might also have lost too much of his conservative base. I don’t know. It would have been an even more gutsy choice than Ryan, however.
Social conservatives and pro lifers were critical when Condi Rice’s name was speculated

Romney’s favourables increased after the RNC convention
Especially notable was Romney’s boost among independents, 45 percent of whom rated him favorably, compared with Thursday’s 34 percent. Twenty percent of independents found him likeable, up from Thursday’s 16 percent….
Respondents said Romney would be more effective than Obama as president by a margin of 37 percent to 33 percent. The margin was even wider among independents, at 26 percent versus 17 percent
Romney and Obama remain in a dead heat in most national polls of voting intentions. Friday’s Reuters/Ipsos poll had Romney with a slim one-point lead among likely voters, effectively unchanged from the day before….
“It was more important for Romney to create a more positive image,” [Ipsos pollster Julia Clark] said. “Some of these softer metrics, image issues, they contribute to factors like trust that ultimately do sway some people” when time comes to vote

My question is, why was she asked to speak, or Clint Eastwood for that matter? Both are socially liberal.

Has the Republican Party truly become a big tent?

When Rice spoke, there were even pictures of GWB in the background! For that matter, why was Jeb Bush asked to speak? I wonder if Carter will be mentioned at all at the DNC.

I think that the GOP is demonstrating a sincere commitment to get down to business with the fiscal mess our country is in.

Abortion is horrific, but the Democrats (politicians) will demagogue and hold that issue hostage until the last one of them is cold and lifeless. However, we have maybe 4 years and our fiscal problems will be so grievous, so deep, and so irreversible, that our country will not survive them. The “on budget” deficit is $16 trillion. The “off budget” (unfunded obligations) is close to $120 trillion. It is a number so huge, so massive, that it will never be fixed without serious sacrifice. That comes out to roughly $400,000 of debt per person in this country. Politicians have spent half a million dollars of each of your kids money. Even the ones in diapers! It is THEFT to spend money that isn’t yours.

I agree our fiscal problems “will never be fixed without serious sacrifice.” That probably means both DRASTIC cuts in spending (Republicans, at least theoretically, agree, but Democrats disagree) and tax increases across the board, NOT tax decreases for the wealthy (Democrats agree, especially with the latter, but Republicans disagree). Looks like our politicians have it all together!

Who is proposing tax decreases for the wealthy?

Taxes may need to be addressed across the board. Even if you took all of the wealth away from the wealthy, it wouldn’t even come close to denting the current on budget debts. Everyone needs to have “skin in the game”. We don’t have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem. Both parties are at fault.

As with both parties, they call on those who are considered influential in the party. Jeb Bush has been doing good work in the area of education and party elders admire that. Condi Rice is an expert in foreign relations and her speech was related to that. As far as Jimmy Carter is concerned, perhaps the Dems would rather forget that chapter in their history. Or maybe not.

I wish Jeb Bush was still Governor of FL. 😦

He was SO far superior to our current Governor, whom many locals refer to as Voldemort.

Here is a transcript of the interview ETWN’s Raymond Arroyo did with presidential candidate Gov. Mitt Romney…
Sort of interesting that someone who may have sold his soul to the devoils (not sure) interviews a person who has definitely sold his soul to the devoils & has made it public he is in league with the devoils.

It is possible Arroyo is just naive and really doesn’t know that he is facilitating evil, but he at least used to frequently have Fr. Sirico of the Acton Institute (a person who has definitely sold his soul to the devoils) as a guest speaker.

Who are the devoils you ask? Koch, Exxon, Scaife and such. They are the ones heavily funding the climate change denialist industries and are heavily funding Romney, Ryan, and the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty, as well. See:
When Romney made that slap in the face comment about Obama wanting to slow the rising oceans and save the earth and himself (I guess) wanting to trash the earth, it was only a tiny tweak to Obama, who has not done a whole lot to mitigate climate change and hardly ever speaks about it anymore (scared by the devoils, I guess). But it was a huge slap in my face and the face of all life on planet earth. That includes people too. See esp pg. 24 of columbia.edu/~jeh1/2008/AGUBjerknes_20081217.pdf

At least Bush had the decency to say he would work to reduce CO2 emissions, and then when he left said that we are addicted to oil. And I thought Bush was the very worst pro-death president we had ever had, and now he comes across as a veritable saint compared to Romney/Ryan. It is one thing to fail to mitigate climate change and put all life on earth at risk; and quite another thing to dissuade people from mitigating, which is what Mit did during the convention. A totally evil act. (So now I guess both Romney & Obama will be headed for hell, unless they repent and strive to make amends for their pro-death stances and messages. Let us pray for them)

Up until the convention I had thought of voting for Romney, bec he was anti-abortion AND had been amenable to mitigating climate change as governor.

Now that has become impossible. I’m pro-life, and I cannot in all conscientiousness vote for someone who would work his hardest to see that all life on earth is annihilated. Yes, killing everyone will solve the abortion problem quite effectively, but at what cost?

I wish I were speaking hyperbole re the climate change situation, but I am not. We are very close to pushing the system into runaway warming, if we have not already done so. And even if we have, it behooves us to save and salvage as many lives as possible in the upcoming hundred to so years when we go into a total tailspin and it’s every man for himself, and skip the women, children, and weaklings. Let us pray we turn the Titantic around before hitting that iceberg.

Did not know you lived in the Sunshine State until now. We lived in Jacksonville for three years and later in Naples for ten. Beautiful state. It will be interesting to see how it goes in 2012. We were there in 2000 and it was like the libs like to portray it. Enjoy your clime.

Pope Benedict XVI has launched a surprise attack on climate change prophets of doom, warning them that any solutions to global warming must be based on firm evidence and not on dubious ideology.

The leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics suggested that fears over man-made emissions melting the ice caps and causing a wave of unprecedented disasters were nothing more than scare-mongering.

Think Catholic teaching does not view those who deny climate change as sinful

Evidence for climate change or what might cause it is not proven, scientists have differing views. Am not going to discuss this on Mitt Romney thread because it is not in keeping with the topic

I couldn’t agree more with what you state, and have stated before, about the dangers of climate change, and I know you have the knowledge and studies available to prove it. Unfortunately, we as a species tend not to focus on matters of urgency until it’s almost too late, especially if they don’t appear to affect us at the moment. Soon there will not even be an iceberg to crash into.

Has the Republican Party truly become a big tent?

John
No. It is not big at all. Even Ron Paul was excluded, along with some of the elected delegates. If Romney loses votes over this, Republicans will bewail the third party effect, when the blame lies with the decision of the Romney campaign to alienate those voters.

Well, people are quite free to continue their gluttonous, profligate lifestyles with no concern for life on earth, but I will continue to mitigate climate change. It has already saved us $1000s over the decades, while reducing our GHG emissions 60%+ below our 1990 emissions, and without lowering our living standard, even increasing it a bit.

So, I would appreciate people like Romney and the Holy Father not trying to dissuade me from mitigating climate change.

It may or may not be a sin to fail to mitigate climate change, esp if people truly don’t know or understand the science, but I think it is a terrible sin to strive to convince other people not to mitigate it, to mount a campaign against mitigating climate change.

I will trust climate scientists to do climate science rather than those who are not climate scientists, and they ALL to a person say anthropogenic climate change is real. My link re runaway warming comes from the top NASA climate scientist - see esp pg 24 of columbia.edu/~jeh1/2008/AGUBjerknes_20081217.pdf

If people want to discount their children and progency and stick their heads in the tar sands, then so be it. But no one, not even the Holy Father, can convince me not to turn off lights not in use or the many other measures we follow.

Sorry, that’s how I am. I don’t like killing people.
