Mom who watches "Desperate Housewives"

My standard for TV, videos, plays, and any other form of entertainment is this:

If I couldn’t view a show with the Blessed Mother watching with me, I don’t watch the show.

No R movies, no prime time tv. We don’t get cable or have a dish. I just can’t get over how many “Christians” watch this stuff and rationalize their viewing habits, yet supporting the production of morally pointless or offensive entertainment that is endangering souls each and every day.

Anyway, what happened to the OP?

I am 16, and I have voiced my disaprobal of Desrpite hosuewives. to my mom she basicly told me today that I wam listing to Mother Angelica, but her world when she grew up and ours have chahnged.

I say…“Morality does not mean it cahnges with the world”

Then we got into a discusstion of a amn and a women living together who are not amrried. Ican tell them if its immoral,b ecause I want them to go to heaven, and I’ll espdchally say somthing if their catholic.

if this ties into the Despritent House wives dicussion we had, I ain’t sure. But she sasy she does nto want me to think she is going to hell,nd I say that i was not saying that. But I told her taht it is at least a near occation of sin.

I ahve always left the room when she wacthes it, but seh brought it up on her own, and I can’t stay scilent (which is good or bad). Is this a sin of ommsion, her wacthing ti I mean? Is there somthing I can do? i think soem disclosedmemnbers of my famally think I’m crazy, but thats oaky.
To Emly: You might have alot more responses from intelligent individuals if you would watch your spelling. No, it is NOT cool to type in the manner you are doing so, contrary to what your friends tell you. I know, I have a 15yo who has told me the same. This is not a good trait to get started. You’re smarter than this I know. Live up to it!

Wow, sparkle…your posts have been kinda harsh today!
Maybe this girl does not type well…I doubt she’s doing it because she wants to be cool by seeming illiterate.
As previous posters have *gently *mentioned, she may need to work on her spelling, but I don’t think that she should not be allowed to post because of that or be ridiculed when she asks a genuine question.

(P.S. Yes this could have been a private message, but I wanted the OP to know that she is encouraged to seek advice despite her literacy level, although we all want to be able to read them correctly!)

Peace (And I really mean it)
Jess

OK… No offense taken I guess. I doubt that any of the other posters appreciate you calling us less than intelligent because we responded to this post.

Give the poor girl a break! That was totally uncalled for.

These are fine standards for you, but how do you know what the Blessed Mother would watch? This is your opinion, not hers… unless you have had some kind of revelation from her?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the Passion of the Christ rated “R”?

I respect your method of deciding what to watch and what not to watch. But please respect that the rest of us may have different, but equally acceptable, methods for making choices.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I take offense to you implying that I am somehow les of a Christian than you because of what tv shows or movies I choose to watch.

I do not watch porn, which is morally reprehensible. Last I checked, we were free to watch tv and movies as it is generally a morally neutral action. Each of us must decide for ourselves what could be an occassion of sin. That is a personal decision.

And if you want to get into endangering souls, there are many other things out there that could be an occasion of sin to people…that doesn’t mean that we have to give up things like money, drinking, watching tv…hmmmmmm…since we know that some men can’t control their lustful thoughts, maybe we women should hide in our houses so we are not endangering souls…

To me, watching Desperate Housewives isn’t a sin. I actually find the show quite amusing, but at the end of the day I know when I go to bed with my boyfriend and fall asleep in his arms I know my heart is pure for him and I could never do the things those characters do because I have no reason to because I am strong in my faith, and I am against such behaviour.
But co-habitating with your “boyfriend” is OK, apparently.

Well, you could be praying the Rosary, or doing some other thing of value for your eternal life.

I think there’s a lot of gray area that we as individuals have to figure out- on our own and in our families. One of these areas is entertainment.

To be honest, I watch Desperate Housewives and Sex in the City… I don’t think I’m any worse off for watching it and based off some of the comments above, I really don’t think some posters even understand the premise of the shows. I appreciate how well-written they are, I enjoy watching the relationships between the women…

Sometimes the judgemental attitudes on these forums shock me and I feel like I am back in fundamental america instead of a Catholic website! Goodness!!

:twocents: Okay. This is crazy. Now I don’t watch Desperate Housewives because I don’t like what they stand for. I don’t watch a lot of T.V. for reasons like that.

But you guys have no right to tell other people they are less of a Christian because they choose to watch such shows. If you would read your bible you know that Matthew 7:1 states that “Judge not lest you be judged” So why you are sitting here passing judgement on your fellow Christians you might want to step back and look in the mirror. There is someone higher up than you and see’s in your mind and heart. He knows if you are really thinking of having an affair. Just because you watch a show or read a book doesn’t mean you want to do it.

Now mind you there are holy people out there who pray 24 hours a day, but they are mostly cloistered religious. If you are not a cloistered religious (and you are not because you are online) then there are plenty of times you are not praying. What are you doing? Reading a book?
Well that’s for entertainment, better put it down and say a novena.

Cupofkindness:
I did not view the Passion of Christ due to it’s R rating.
Well, this is just plain ignorant, in my opinion. The rating on movies is there as a GUIDE. For people to use their BRAINS to decide if it is ok. Obviously we all know that the crucifixion was extremely violent, and for this to be portrayed on film, a “R” rating was necessary. There are PG movies that are trashy and pointless that I would choose not to see and there are R rated movies that are good movies (like the Passion) and that we can benefit greatly from seeing. With all the good Catholics that recommended the Passion, to refrain from seeing it ENTIRELY based on it’s “R” rating… as I said… ignorant.

Not nice. Not fair of you to assume that I don’t do anything of value for my eternal life just because I admit to watching tv and movies. I do not watch tv/movies 24 hours a day. I do not pray 24 hours a day. I do not sleep 24 hours a day.

There is a time and a place for everything…it is up to me to decide what I do and when I do it.

Today has just been a bad day for judging others on this forum. It really saddens me. I converted to Catholicism because it is the Truth. If I had relied on the examples of Catholicism that I find here and in my daily life I would still be running the other way.

We don’t watch R movies. Period. I have a house full of children under 17 and only one television in the middle of the house. I don’t have the luxury of viewing something privately due to the dymanics of my family life. Moreover, with the exception of The Passion, the R rated movies don’t hold any appeal for me. Now there is a PG version of The Passion that I can view with my teenagers. And the comment about the Blessed Mother watching the Passion live? Just because something happened doesn’t mean that it’s good stuff for my children to see, even if it happened to Christ. They will have many years of adulthood to make their own choices. But I need to have a high standard because I’m responsible for their souls. I need to draw a very definite line in the sand, because teenagers are famous for trying to bend the rules to fit their desires. I want them to remain pure when it comes to what they allow in their minds, so that they can see secular media for what it so often is: the purveyor of a culture that is deadly to Christianity. When I was younger, say in my twenties, I simply wasn’t as sensitive to tv and radio and movies. I would watch a lot of things that I now regret and would advise my children not to view. But now I am fortunate that my life is so full that I don’t need tv to relax or be entertained. I have always felt that tv steals ones mind and one’s emotional well-being slowly, and alters social norms in a detrimental way. Even shows like documentaries and news programs. But that’s another discussion.

I don’t need to debate with anyone here. Go ahead and watch whatever you like. It’s certainly none of my business. I just hope that what you choose to fill your time and your mind with brings your soul closer to Heaven. That is ultimately the choice in everything we do as Catholic Christians: move towards God or away from God. So ask yourself, do these television shows bring you closer to Christ? Do they help you resist sin? Love your neighbor as yourself? Place God first in your life? No one can answer these questions but you.

I don’t recall any part of the bible where Jesus was snide and sarcastic. Perhaps (considering we are made in his image) you can consider a less judgemental and condescending stance.
