No one is saying he should cut his mother off. This is just about attending the wedding.

Concern the relationship will deteriorate to the point that they cut each other off would be something to discuss with the preist. I think you really need to know the personalities involved to make that call.

But I think there is something very strong about the Christian Witness who says no…mom will remember that and mom likely had a hand in his religious upbringing.

AndrewAxland - Hmmn, Andrew, do you seriously believe that Jesus would approve, and have fun there? I would, in such a situation tell her I love her very much, and will pray for her, but that to be there as family would be taken by most as approval, so I would not be there.

p.s. Is your stance because you have your own personal agenda?

No it is not. The word “approval” does not appear. Stop hanging amendments on to teaching:

II. RESPECT FOR THE DIGNITY OF PERSONS

Respect for the souls of others: scandal

2284 Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. The person who gives scandal becomes his neighbor’s tempter. He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense.

2285 Scandal takes on a particular gravity by reason of the authority of those who cause it or the weakness of those who are scandalized. It prompted our Lord to utter this curse: "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea."86 Scandal is grave when given by those who by nature or office are obliged to teach and educate others. Jesus reproaches the scribes and Pharisees on this account: he likens them to wolves in sheep’s clothing.87

2286 Scandal can be provoked by laws or institutions, by fashion or opinion.

Therefore, they are guilty of scandal who establish laws or social structures leading to the decline of morals and the corruption of religious practice, or to "social conditions that, intentionally or not, make Christian conduct and obedience to the Commandments difficult and practically impossible."88 This is also true of business leaders who make rules encouraging fraud, teachers who provoke their children to anger,89 or manipulators of public opinion who turn it away from moral values.

What is it about hanging on extras? One can attend a wedding, eat a slice of cake and hug the bride. This does not mean they are doing the chicken dance and doing jello shots. Attending does not mean the same thing as “having fun”.

One thinks of St. Thomas More. He did not approve of the wedding of Henry VIII, although he easily could have said “oh no problem; he is my king and while what he is doing is a sin, I’ll go along with it because I love him and want to support him.” Yet he went willingly and bravely to his martyrdom, and became a saint, a sign and witness of the truth for us today.
And what became of all of Henry’s former Catholic cronies who just went along with it because it was the easy thing to do? What happened to the formerly very Catholic country of England?
Lots and lots of examples in history of good people just going along with evil actions and not taking stands.

I never advocated for that, I didn’t abandon my homosexual relatives either.

OP has stated the mom is not talking with him due to his decision to not attend. Sounds like someone has been cut off.

That is op mom’s problem by not approving of sin He made Christ happy

Jesus insists that we must choose him FIRST over our family. Tough truth, but there it is.
“If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.”

So the OP should allow his mother to emotional manipulate him into going along with her wishes for fear he will be cut off?

Doesn’t the mom have some responsibility to be respectful of her son’s religious beliefs?

Okay, I’ll bite - how do you know this?
I doubt very much there were any lesbian weddings in Israel at the time of Christ. I just used the example that came first to mind. Substitute some other event if you like.

And some people believe that 9/11 was an inside job. Because some strangers on the internet think something does not make it so.
I believe that attending a wedding could reasonably be construed as consenting to the wedding. Do you really think that this opinion is just as much beyond the pale as conspiracy theories about 9/11? If so, wow.

You are right it does bust up families. But people need to realize as Catholics this is what we believe, this is who we are. Do we love all our brothers and sisters in Christ? Of course. But sometimes we have to make the tough choices. It’s not about just going to keep the peace, it’s people accepting us for what we believe and understanding our choice not to attend something.
While this issue is just one reason why I lost Catholic faith, clearly from the responses, what you espouse is not what all Catholics believe.

She’s also ignoring there are plenty of preists and respected Catholic thinkers who have publicly said as much.

I have to agree that it sound cute and contrived. A bit silly, even.
I’m not sure if you mean that my opinion (that attending a wedding could reasonably interpreted as consenting to the wedding) sounds cute, contrived, and a bit silly, or if you mean that her apparent comparison of my opinion to 9/11 conspiracy theories sounds cute, contrived, and a bit silly. 🙂

If mom was respectful of her son’s beliefs, she would probably still be married to her first husband (assuming there was one.) She would still be following her Catholic faith and we would not be having this discussion. Do we scrutinize all weddings we attend? First marriages, second marriages, are they valid, was the first annulled? Only go to weddings held in a Catholic Church? No protestant weddings because they aren’t sacramental? My nephew is living with his fiance - do I stay home from their wedding?

The former. Her comparison was pretty much spot on.
