No, they often go through an atheist–agnostic phase, disillusioned with all religions. It is normal, but does not need to last that long.

This is not true at all. Catholicism is never mentioned in any classes or in any meetings in the lds church. And mormons are not by and large anticatholic. What happens is simple: mormonism has many answers and its picture of where we were and where we are going is very powerful. And the notion of truth is also very powerful. For the post-crowd, others religions just don’t have the answers that mormonism has. Thus, when they become disillusioned from mormonism, other religions just don’t hold the mustard.
Not entirely true. I was taught clearly that the Catholics were the Church of the Devil. I still have the edition of Mormon Doctrine that says the Catholic Church is the Great and Abominable Church.

And what you claim may be what happened to you, but when I left LDS, I began searching for Church “home” right away. I never stopped believing in God. I never considered the Catholic Church because of how I had been taught as an LDS. I knew there had to be the true Church out here and that God did not lead from the false prophets for nothing.

The Catholic Church did not only hold the mustard, it held the truth

I have been a member of the Mormons Church for more than 30 years and I have been a teacher in Sunday School many, many times and I never taught anything against Catholics or any other religion. I have never seen any teacher in Priesthood, Sunday School, Seminary or Institute or even from the pulpit to say negative things about other religion. We focus on our doctrines and just want to have a good relationship with all other religions and in fact we do.

We have partnership with the Catholics to help the poor and people that go through calamities. We also work with Muslims to distribute food, medications, blankets, etc. It is part of Mormon teaching to get along well with everyone from any religion and this comes from the top. Just watch general conferences and you will see. Unfortunately people get angry when we state that we believe to be the only true church in the whole world. They get offended and they resent us, but we do not wish anything bad to our fellow Catholics or Protestants or any other religion.

We could in a civilized way discuss our differences, but that seems to be difficult at times. We don’t hate anyone, on the contrary, we are taught by the savior and by our leaders to love friends and even enemies. Our leaders constantly tell us to treat others from other faith in a fair and friendly way. In realitly we don’t want to be the enemy, we want to be friends with everyone, but often people do not understand our message and form a very negative image that does not reflect who we really are!

These two articles of faith reflect our atittude,
  1. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
  2. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul-We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

LDS scriptures say otherwise.

"the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”

This is a creed that reflects Christian belief:

*I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the
power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge
the living and the dead
*I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

That’s the $64,000 question, isn’t it? Not only that, but we have the texts clearly stating that all churches on earth were wrong (founded by Satan, the BOM says) yet strangely enough, the public face of the church now tries so very hard to appear Christian while teaching among their own that everyone else is wrong. Hypocrisy, anyone?

This fosters the us-versus-them attitude that defines them, something no amount of political correctness can overcome.

Why would you want to partner with people who belong to the church founded by Satan? The BOM is very clear about that.
We have partnership with the Catholics to help the poor and people that go through calamities. We also work with Muslims to distribute food, medications, blankets, etc. It is part of Mormon teaching to get along well with everyone from any religion and this comes from the top. Good works are only part of the point, Evan. They are like the trailer being pulled by the RV on the highway; they are the fruit of faith and don’t stand on their own. And since the LDS has faith in a polygamous, evolving being maquarading as God, you don’t accept the real, true, and living God of the Bible.

I’ve watched General Conferences and found no divinity therein. You can say that you believe that yours is the only true church, but the stinging indictment against it demonstrates that fact that most Mormons don’t know their own history.
We could in a civilized way discuss our differences, but that seems to be difficult at times. We don’t hate anyone, on the contrary, we are taught by the savior and by our leaders to love friends and even enemies. Yes, it is difficult when the missionaries come to my door, tell me that my Bible is incomplete, and want me to read a book that tells me I belong to the church founded by Satan. The church views all people in one of two catgories: members and potential converts.
  1. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
But doing the right thing for the wrong reason is still wrong. Since the Bible is so corrupted and inaccurate, you have no idea what Paul may or may not have said and you’re using this as a convenient vehicle to prove your point.

I do regularly, but is there more we can do as a group? This is a pretty big dragon to slay…
In our daily lives, face to face we need to speak about Jesus about the faith when prompted and not be scared for whatever reason we may be tempted to adopt. I have been in Utah for 12 years.

I do this know often. I have learned the difference between evangelization and proselytizing.
http://utahmission.com/pages/Here_I_am.html
What I have found is people do want to hear about our faith. They are curious. After 12 years of helping with the RCIA I have found that it is with contacts with Catholics through the years that helped them through the door. Maybe they attended a Mass with a friend while in college, or they met several Catholics in the past or watched EWTN or visited a Cathedral while on a Mission etc… As a group, even though we may never meet we all need to play a small part when ever we get the opportunity, when the Holy Spirit promps us. We need to act. I am always surprised that others, the LDS want to learn about our faith when in person. It’s a great time to speak about such things as why we have a Crucifix, the joy of Confession and so forth. Just to ad a note that I am sure you understand….never be tempted to look for results, leave that to God. If it happens, if we see it, give it up to God…although we can and do experience the joy between the Father and the Son. The gift to us

Awesome, thank you! This will be but one more nail in the coffin of LDS claims.
No, the nails are not for a coffin. They were for Jeusus and He accepted them for all, in his hands and in His feet. You need to remember this when you speak. It has to be out of love. No one should desire the fall of Mormonism is a “see I am right way”. Do you understand how painful this is for them? Try to…If you wonder why they can not see these things clearly think about loosing your whole family in this life and the next. Really believing this if you were to accept the Catholic faith. This is huge stuff. You have to have so much love in your heart to continue in these things otherwise a tremendous amount of damage can be caused…

We do not want to help a Mormon loose faith only to become a person of no faith at all. its never about winning, its all about Jesus winning.

Not relevant what you taught

I have never seen any teacher in Priesthood, Sunday School, Seminary or Institute or even from the pulpit to say negative things about other religion. We focus on our doctrines and just want to have a good relationship with all other religions and in fact we do.

First, that is not true. The minute you repeat waht Joe said about no church having authority and only the LDS Church is true, you speak against other churches.

Not true. I posted comments by LDS leaders on how they felt about other churches. You seem to have little knowledge about your history

Really? Then why did McKonkie, an LDS Apostle, call the Catholic Church the Great and Abominable Church? You don’t think that is a bit hateful?

I should’ve said that it was another nail in the coffin of false doctrine. Yes, I do what I do because I don’t want to see any Mormons go to Hell go following Joseph Smith’s deranged version of God.

This has been my calling for some time and I’ve been researching some 14 years to be able to do it. In the process, I’ve come to know my self better spiritually and devoted my energies to what God has me working on right now. Maybe I’ll be reassigned tomorrow, or maybe I’ll work on this topic for the rest of my life, but it makes no difference as long as I’m doing what I can to dispel false faith and instill real faith in the real God Almighty. I will make mistakes, do and say things I shouldn’t because I’m flawed and in need of a savior (and someone to help me out with the screaming baby on my lap!), but as long as I do the best I can, God will be happy with my efforts.

I do understand, why? Anyhting I can spot in others I can also spot in myself.
God bless you

Returning Home, one thing I have found that puts Mormon claims in another light is tours of our Church. Maybe you would consider this. We give them once a month. I do not know where you are from but I am in Utah so we mostly get Mormons at the tour each month. We go from 6-7 PM. We have a yearly RCIA class that starts at 7pm.
During the tour we keep it a tour and we are careful not to have alternative motives in our minds. Again just a tour. We pretty much allow God to take it to where He wants it to go depending on each soul visiting. Some have many questions. Some have none. Some stay after many don’t. Without even trying we are answering many false claims they have been taught just by speaking about the truth of say the Crucifix, the Cross, Baptism of infants, pouring, at out Church full immersion. What the Tabernacle is, a quite moment in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, the joy that only Confession can bring etc… One LDS man said to me it seems that Catholics focus more on the death of Christ than on the resurrection. This was asked 6 weeks into the Easter season long after the LDS Celebrated it with a dinner among family. Another claim put to rest at yet another tour of our church.

The question is in not the wording but in the actions that perhaps went against the wording. Also, a creed can take on many forms. It is not just in the above. Also, this wasn’t a catholic thing. It was not against the catholic church. When Joseph prayed about what church he should join as a teenager, he did the correct thing–he prayed. You may not like the answer but…what to do? He was told to join none of them. Now at that time, the protestant sects were in the majority. I don’t think that the catholic church had a strong pressence.

Awesome, thank you! This will be but one more nail in the coffin of LDS claims.
Actually, I know Dale. We have discussed things lds many times. His website is not a nail in the lds coffin and he would not refer to his website as such. Dale was a member of the Reorganized LDS church which was founded by lds members who did not want to follow Brigham Young. And they denied Joseph Smith was a polygamist.

Let me make this simple: The lds church is a restorationist church. It is not a reformed church as the protestants are. To be a restorationist church means that the church of christ needed to be restored. Now it seems to me, that when one looks into the history of christianity, we can see some abominations. Right?

I have no problem with your tours, but you need to admit that your tour is basically a missionary effort directed at the mormons. 🙂

again, I still have the edition of Mormon Doctrine where Apostle McKonkie called the Catholic Church the “Great and Abominable Church”

The Apostle’s Creed is accepted by nearly every Christian there is. This includes all the denominations that were prevalent in the time and place of Smith…Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Anglicans, etc.

Still no LDS can say what exactly is the “abominable” part.
