I note nothing resembling the testing of spirits in there.
The problem is: all faiths can point to another faith and claim ‘false prophet’. Heck, we have Benny Hinns and Joyce Meyers out there. Are they false prophets also? One could say so without any problem. And since the catholic church has a pope, one can also claim the name for the pope.

And that is the problem. JS had one goal: to bring people closer to god. But he wasn’t perfect.

why me,
I haven’t read all the responses, but I wanted to make my own.

The truth isn’t just a vague set of values or ideas. The truth isn’t yet to be discovered. The truth isn’t just an image of god that fits for the moment with more revealed as time goes by.

THE TRUTH was revealed on a cross on a hill outside the city of Jerusalem 2000 years ago in the form of a person fully God and fully Man. As He gave up His Spirit in obedience to His Father, He revealed for ALL TIME the full and irrepressible TRUTH. His last words revealed to all of us, “It is FINISHED”.

in Christ
Steph
If all truth is only found in the bible or in the catechism, we are in big trouble. Even at this moment, christians cannot come together about what is in the bible as each grapples for his or her truth.

That being said, here is one truth that the catholic church has to claim: youtube.com/watch?v=61wj4tJICcc 🙂

Can I ask some questions
  1. Are there any true Prophets or are they all false ? (test the spirit)
  2. Did JS not profess that JESUS CHRIST came in the flesh and that he is the only begotten son of God in the flesh. ?
  3. Does the Catholic Church have truth in its teachings?
  4. Does God lead us into temptation.?
Just looking for simple answers YES / NO
I will try a simple yes or no to these questions. there is not how ever always just a simple yes or no answer.
  1. Are there any true Prophets or are they all false ? (test the spirit)yes . the test is do they teach something that is contrary to that God has already given. JS failed this test
  2. Did JS not profess that JESUS CHRIST came in the flesh and that he is the only begotten son of God in the flesh. ? this one is more than a yes or not. Yes he taught this but no not in true since that Jesus is the only begotten son of God.
  3. Does the Catholic Church have truth in its teachings? Yes it is the holder of all truth.
  4. Does God lead us into temptation.? NO , but he does not stop us from pursuing it either.

That is why we must really on the Church. without the magistirium of the Catholic Church you have opened yourself to being mislead by false teachings and misrepresentation of what the scripture say.

The difference is that Benny Hinns and Joyce Meyers do not claim to be prophets (or at least that I am aware of). The similarity is that, in my opinion, they have the same motivation that did Joseph Smith, et., al., and as a result are under Senate investigation for fraud.

The Pope is not a prophet, nor does anybody claim he is a prophet.

But he is a leader of a church. And both Joyce and Benny are leaders also. The word ‘prophet’ can also have a figurative meaning: all those who lead people away from christ. The book of mormon also has false prophets appear. Mormons are very aware of false prophets.

JS had many goals, none of which included bringing people closer to God. he gained power and money and brought many young girls closer to hos bed.

The pistol was a pea shooter. 🙂
If it was a pea shooter, nothing more than a BB gun, then how did four people get injured?

If one carefully defines a prophet as an honest historian, using the principle that history repeats itself, to criticize society as he sees it, always seeking to follow God’s will in the process, then there are many prophets. encarta.msn.com/dictionary_1861736499/prophet.html
Ignore definition number one.

If love fails, prophecy will cease. God is love. 1 Corinthians 13:8

“Love never fails. Now if there are prophecies, they will be done away with. If there are languages, they will cease. If there is knowledge, it will be done away with.”

And I certainly don’t agree with JS’s definition of love.

Emma was by no means rich when her husband was murdered. Plus, he had no power. He led a small community of mormons. But he was a builder of cities and temples. Plus, he was admired by many people and hated too. What young girls were in his bed? It is rather strange. JS was a very fertile man. He fathered many children with Emma, his wife.

But I see no children by other women. 🙂 Strange isn’t it?

A pea shooter can do damage. But it wasn’t his gun. The jailer felt a little sorry for him and gave him a pistol. No one died and the injuries, if there were any, were not severe. But JS was murdered in cold blood. A pea six shooter is no match for a mob.

I may have gotten this wrong. It is up to interpretation just who gave JS the gun. 🙂

A quotation from JS on Love:

Love
It is a time-honored adage that love begets love. Let us pour forth love—show forth our kindness unto all mankind, and the Lord will reward us with everlasting increase; cast our bread upon the waters and we shall receive it after many days, increased to a hundredfold.

History of the Church, 5:517

Not a bad quotation on love. 🙂

The word “prophet,” in the LDS context, means that direct revelation is received from God; that is definitive, not figurative.

And it does seem that for many TV evangelists they have a direct link to god as they receive ‘revelation’ as they are praying or throughout each day of their lives. Or so they claim.

Let’s ask our Mormon friends if they hold to the doctrine of eternal progression? This doctrine states, As man is god once was, as god is man may become? They believe that Jesus Christ was a man who obeyed the Mormon gospel and became a god. They believe that He had a father who was an man, who obeyed the Mormon gospel, became a god, had sexual relation with another woman and begot Jesus. This idea goes on and on. So, my question to my Mormon friends is this. Where did the first God come from? If you go back far enough don’t you come to the first cause or God?

Just who gave him the gun is in dispute, I think. It may not have been the jailer. But certainly against a mob, six shots will not help.

fairlds.org/pubs/jsmartyr.pdf
that right there is the biggest problem with all of Mormonism there is nothing about it from the very beginning that is not in some form of dispute even within LDS themselves.

they can not come to a defined doctrine. they can not seem to even come to a defined agreement on the God as even they understand him. what the leaders say and teach are only true as long as that leader ( prophet ) is alive. and sometimes not even that long. but once he is dead they are free to dismiss what he taught.

Be very careful.

You’ll be getting a lot of feel good “milk before meat” (heavier doctrines not taught until you join the “club”) and asking about “testimony” of the Book of Mormon, along with challenges to read it to attest to its authenticity.

I would ask if they have ever read the Qu’ran, and what did the Holy Spirit tell them? Muhammed claimed revelations, too, and also said G*d authorized his polygyny (including marrying his adopted son’s wife).

The Qu’ran also throws out the challenge: “If you don’t think this book is revleation, try writing this book on your own”.

Don’t give into these logical fallacies. There are many good articles his on responding to LDS missionaries.

To answer your question. He was a created being by his father who also a created being. Ask your Mormon friends to explain “the Law of eternal progression” to you.

Thanks for your thoughts
1 Surely it a matter of interpretation whether JS failed the test, it all depends from which point you are looking at it from. He gave me an answer that I felt from a young boy that the Catholic Church taught the opposit, I ask myself why did I feel the way I did inspite of growing up Catholic and I had no outside influence.
2. Again I think it comes to personal interpretation.
3. Yes I agree The Catholic Church for the most part has truth, Yes there are difference that also creat a great devide ( the nature of the Godhead etc) as LDS this should not stop me embracing all truth, for my belief is that all truth comes from God and no other source.
4. I have another question in relation to your answer, why do you then pray to your Heavenly Father asking Him not to lead you into temptation ?

Throughout these posts are just unfounded accusations of how Mormons can’t come to a defined answer and that there is even dispute amongst the members and from Prophet to Prophet things change WITH NO SPECIFICS, I believe this to be very shallow. As an LDS for 25 years I dispute MOST of what is said against the Church and the members
