As a Catholic, I have to say. Not all Mormons, nor their missionaries are bad. Just like not all Catholics, nor the Catholic Church is all bad. While we may differ theologically, I believe as a whole, we all agree that respect for another faith’s worship space is extremely important. There is no way for a Catholic to explain to someone of another faith how important and sacred these things are, just like they wouldn’t be able to explain theirs to a Catholic. We need to remember, this story is just now breaking. I am sure there are alot of details yet to come. Although, based on what is out there already, it doesn’t look good, we need to keep an open mind. We need to forgive. Forgiving does not mean forgetting, but we really need to focus on the forgiveness aspect.

I think so, but it was also the culture with many gold artifacts that were stolen by catholics. :o Plus the destruction of their culture.
well i guess that made it okay then. so then do you think that official position of the catholic church regarding the aztecs was wrong?

And then we have this good deed by the lds community in New Zealand…

Helping Hands Day, 30 June, Sunbury–A Success!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who came to Helping Hands Day at the Sunbury-on-Thames project! It took place at St Pauls Catholic College and was attended by 150 Mormon church members, community and friends. The Mayor of Spelthorne came with his wife to open the day of service and was impressed with the teenagers, children and adults who painted four corridors, a girl’s toilet room, 6 classrooms, pruned trees and cleared nearly 200 sq metres of overgrowth in just a few hours!

The premises managers were on site and had this to say, “what a pleasure it was working with such a lovely bunch of people. You have helped uplift two areas within the college for which we grateful and I am sure the students will be as well.” The Mayor also mentioned how refreshing it was to see teenagers willing to donate a Saturday to a service project. He hopes more young people will follow the example of the volunteers and feel a part of their community.

It was great to see members of different faiths work together to give much needed help to the college. The transformation was amazing to see. It was about giving back to the community and sharing skills and time for a worthy cause. The volunteers are looking forward to next year’s project. We hope you will be able to join us!

Here are the details of the event:

Once a year a Helping Hands Day project in the Surrey area is chosen to benefit and strengthen the community by working together. This year our project is going to be taking place at Sunbury-on-Thames at St Pauls Catholic College TW16 6NX

St Pauls has 1100 students attending from year 7-11 studying technology and sciences. The college is in desperate need for help to refurbish the existing facilities and provide a neat working environment on it’s beautiful campus, which means a bit of painting and cutting back some overgrowth.

All you need to bring is a picnic lunch, clothes to paint in and a smile! We hope to see you there, feel free to ask any questions.

Helping Hands Day: 30 June, 2007 from 10:00-3:00.

Much thanks,

Helping Hands Day

Now isn’t that lovely…🙂

I hope that Catholic Answers sends 1000 Mormon Threat booklets to the above college!!

I know there were a lot of Spanish Catholic missionaries doing their thing back then, but can you really attribute the fall of an entire civilization to the Catholic Church? And what about the Native Americans in this area? Did the Catholics massacre them, too? Steal their gold? Force them to convert?

me too. we know this was a missionary effort to gain referrals after all.

You need to ask the Aztecs if you can find any…🙂
one other question, when you are reading at mass in the capacity of lector and taking communion and being a good catholic with all the nuns… are you calling them to repentance for these issues that are troubling you?

Perhaps you should direct your question to the Spanish since THEY were the ones to actually conquer the Aztecs.

In this case, two Mormon missionaries, were the culprits. Americans turning against Americans, while it was Spanish vs Aztecs.

Those are just a few misguided INDIVIDUALS. They don’t represent the LDS church. LOL!

I certainly hope that’s not your real name. I could see an invitation to a disciplinary council in your future.

LaMar (not my real name)
I am no longer Mormon, so I would not recognize the authority of any such council.

Paul (my real name - I have nothing to hide)

This part of the Deseret News article gave me a chuckle:
The Deseret Morning News:
Olsen called the missionaries’ actions “inexcusable” and said respect for other faiths is a “cardinal tenet” of the LDS Church.
Yeah, that’s why their scriptures say that our faith is an abomination and all we who profess it are corrupt.

Paul

And why places like this shrine are merely “tourist attractions”.

I am a Mormon who also served a mission (Brazil) These missionaries deserve the fullest punishment by law.

Sorry

None of my mormon friends feel superior at all. In fact, they never give other faiths a second thought. To each his own is the motto. Of course, they would like non-members to convert but no one dehumanize non-members. In fact, mormons are known for their hard work and clean living. And in fact, companies often go to BYU to recruit perspective young employees.

And I might add that young mormon missionaries are known for their clean behavior and looks. It seems to me that you are misleading the lurkers on this thread.
Your pals over at madb went from “we love our Catholic brothers”, trying to play all nice for the cameras on this issue, to mocking the beliefs of all Catholics in a thread started hours later. So no, this is not an isolated incident of 3 missionaries. It is 3 men, who the mormons consider ministers of their church, showing the world exactly what mormons think of Catholicism.

What I find most entertaining is that people are telling their real life stories about bad experiences with Mormons, and these three desecrating a holy place and most Mormons just refuse it, say that no Mormons act like that, and always give the cut and paste reply, “I am sorry you have had such a bad experience, that doesn’t represent The Church in any way.”

Also, for all the people complaining about being persecuted, I have a little something for you to read. Not exactly the same, but it still applies. biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=47&chapter=6

I hate to be a party pooper here but when a person looks at history one would find a vibrant Aztec culture vandalized for church and Spain. I do believe that on a scale of 1 to 10 that would be a 10 for sure since an entire culture was destroyed. And need I mention pagan lithuania and pagan latvia and what happened in those countries when the Catholic church arrived with its missionaries?

Let those without sin cast the first stone…:o
Are you serious?!?!?!?!

Aztecs murdered hundreds of thousands of innocents as human sacrifices over the course of just a few years. It was not until the Armenian genocide and the Nazi Holocaust 400 years later that humanity saw such wanton destruction of human life on this scale. It was not until the 20th century that the pure evil of the Aztecs was matched.

When the Spanish came, the neighboring tribes, the ones that had been raided for “sacrifices”, took the opportunity to overthrow the Aztecs. Of course the horrified Spanish, some of whom had been captured and sacrificed, aided these people. Just like the Americans helped the Jews in WWII.

My, you chose a very sick culture to admire. Who else do you admire?

And your references to Lithuania and Latvia are utterly specious.

Additionally, I would like to quote from the Forum guidelines.
Guidelines
For both Catholic and non-Catholic posters:
  • It is acceptable to question the doctrine or dogma of another’s faith
  • It is never acceptable to question the sincerity of an individual’s beliefs
  • Bringing up historical controversies peculiar to a particular religion should be done cautiously*
  • It is acceptable to discuss the effect the incident had on current policy or practice.
  • It is acceptable to seek the truth vs. commonly-held beliefs or conventional wisdom about actual events.
  • It is fallacious reasoning to use embarrassing incidents to claim that they “prove” a particular religion is false.
  • Expecting members of any Church to defend or answer for the excesses or extremism of bodies that have broken with it is a technique that has no merit and can’t be defended.

Emphasis mine.

If you want to criticize people for events of hundreds of years ago, you better know what happened. And you should also abide by forum rules in any case.

Based on what I have seen here, I think what these young men did, and boasted about doing, may possibliy not be unrepresentative, but instead me be a case of boing a little proud about there accomplishments.

You can see from ther posts on this thread that my opinion has changed. That is due completely to some of the Mormon posters on this thread.

Well, at least this incident has helped us quite directly here at CAF. We know who to listen to and who to ignore.

A whole civilization was destroyed and looted by ‘well-meaning’ catholics who most likely received a blessing from catholic leaders before doing it. I am not blaming anybody or any church. I am only saying: let those without sin cast the first stone.

What happened to the gold? And must there be collective punishment toward a whole civilization?

Perhaps some do. But what is important is that there are many mormons who defend the catholic church and criticize the missionaries on that thread. And lets face it, the lds church has apologized. The missionaries will experience church discipline and the law. I think that this is the end of the story.

Now if the lds leadership attempted to cover it up in 2006, that would be a different thing. But lets not begin to discuss coverups in this thread.
